With the addition of player damage in SMP, PvP battle will be becoming common. While one way of fighting your enemies is straightforward, how do you protect your stuff when enemies break in? Traps of course. So here's a trap thread, post your vs. player traps that you've conceived. here's my first one, a room built to seal people in and explode.
this is the entrance, you can only enter from this side. The door is attached sideways, so that it is open when the switch is off.
Inside you find two switches and a closed door at the other end. there is also, for those who pay attention, dynamite in the ceiling. the issue is which switch will open the door and which switch will drop the bomb.
this is the left side of the room, but it would look no different had i shown you the right side, because both switches have identical circuits.
On the roof, BOTH circuits connect to an OR gate, which leads to both the dynamite, and the front door. no matter which switch you hit, the dynamite will explode, and the door will be locked.
Of course when used in actual trapping, the room would be set in a building and be made of strong material, stopping the idea of someone just digging through the walls to avoid the choice. in addition, it could easily be set so that the room either fills with sand or floods with lava upon explosion, thus finishing off any survivors. its a really messy trap, and you wouldn't want to use it to protect something long term, but if you just have to keep people from getting through long enough to reach a certain goal before them, it does a fairly good job of it.
Like i said, in practice it would be built into a larger building. you wouldn't be able to see the wires or what's on the roof. this was just to display its making...
I've found the most effective one to be a TNT trap. Using either a wood or smooth stone floor, one can slip a plate over a surface without much notice.
<-- Just imagine that's a stone plate
Awal I LOVE your trap idea.
Its very simple yet could be extremely effective.
Although to prevent too much damage from happening one could possible put a layer of Obsidian underneath the TNT so you dont have a huge hole in the ground for when you want to rebuild your trap.
the biggest problem though is the delay between pressing the button and the TNT exploding, its easily a long enough period for anyone attempting to pass through to get out of blast range. space TNT throughout the room though, and there's no way to get far enough. if you bury a TNT every 4 spaces then the blast expands. something i've wanted to experiment with though is the idea of a room that gets buried under sand at the press of a switch or a lever. anyone have an idea for making that work?

If you can place ice blocks, you could trigger a redstone torch to melt ice, causing a chain reaction of torches to drop out from under sand and trap the player.
I'v seen this, havnt tried making it myself. But...

The idea is that you step on the plate and the Tnt lights, the tnt being the only thing holding up the sand or gravel, both now fall into the pit you dug up that can be filled with your choice of lava or just a sudden drop to your death.
im not entirely sure how you set it up to work; but that would work out better when it comes to killing them just "oh hey tnt"
but can you place ice aside from hacking/modding? I know you can craft snow blocks, but i haven't seen anything about ice...would snow work?
if it falls like sand does when you place it, then yes.
Though to minimize damage, and make a reusable trap that you can place in your own home!

The depth of the hole makes it so they cant very well quickly climb out of said hole. Its a nice minefield and makes it easy to kill players who dont watch and very well just take their stuff too if its left and all within the comfort of your home.

An improvement on your trap:

With torches on all four sides of the TNT, the pitfall is now cross-shaped, and easier to fall into. However, this is makes it a bit more visible (unless your floor is sand or gravel).
And an advanced version of this trap:

Sand and gravel floats on redstone, so your trap could be the size of a small/medium sized room if you really wanted it to be. Of course, this isn't tnt-efficient. But it is simple to reset, and that is what is important. It would be a good idea to have a lava floor at the bottom of this, since that much tnt would make quite a mess.

I still use "I" as my inventory key. Everyone who doesn't press "I" is wrong. How can people who press "e" live with themselves?

I 'just' made that, like 3 minutes ago. Made me laugh.
The problem with your trap is that the layer has to be blind to get trapped there.
This. Also... what if I simply place another redstone torch next to your last iron door? I would avoid using iron doors in traps because they are so easily influenced. Also, by having switches around, you prompt the enemy to search for a redstone system... because you wouldn't put switches there without a redstone system.
The problem with having pressure plates is that [though hard to notice to an unwary player] if someone is looking for them, they'll find them. However, pressure plate traps are much more acceptable, in my opinion.
I respect the fact that you're taking an initiative to teach people the ways of warfare in minecraft :smile.gif:
If you guys want to see a VERY large collection of traps like, this, I suggest you check out my Art of War thread.
Here's one for ya. Water can be held up by signs, so just make an inconspicuous looking water hole. Little do people know it's a 50 block drop below the thin layer of water. Who needs circuits and TNT when you have gravity?
If they somehow survive and try to dig their way out, the signs will be tossed off as the sand falls down, causing the water to fall down on them.

eh, its my first attempt, so i'm not gonna worry too much that its not the most sophisticated thing ever. but I understand that people will suspect a trap, the actual trap is that there's no right switch and the door goes nowhere. its not meant to protect anything in reality, its meant to be a red herring. anyone who tries to reach something valuable through it is just gonna get pain, or at best, will waste their time.
THIS. This is the idea that you need to follow through with. What you want, is not to kill the enemy, because that only allows them to respawn and resume their assault on you. [That said... sometimes killing the enemy is necessary and unavoidable] When you trap and enemy [literally] you can cause them to waste large amounts of time, during which you can either hide your valuables somewhere else, or prepare a new trap for when they finally escape.

First I started out with an iron door with an empty chest behind it
Under the floor,
Under the switch,
To the side
Up up up
Above the roof,
Now have fun stealing my things.
And if you're smart enough to bypass my primary switch and break through the wall, (other side of wall)
Have fun!
(will the tnt destroy the lava?)
