Players should not be able to see each other through blocks, and name-tags should only appear when a player has line of sight to another player. "Oh, but if you don't want to be seen you can just crouch."
A poor solution to a simple problem.
If I'm already hidden underground, 20 tiles, why should I have to crouch everywhere I walk within my hidden base to remain hidden? I AM ALREADY HIDDEN! It is redundant in a way that is entirely unnecessary.
How it should work is like this:
-If you have no line of sight to a player, then you cannot see their nametag. Period. Even if there is only a layer one block thick between you.
-If you have line of sight to a player, then you can see their name-tag...that is unless they are in stealth mode, which would make them...stealthy. That is the idea of stealth: they could be right in front of you, and you may not even see them.
You know what mode has always-visible name-tags?

I play on a server that is open to PvP, and you might come up with another thought of, "Well if it's PvP, then expect to be killed."
And I do. I expect to be killed when I am caught unawares. I expect to be killed in the open. I expect to be killed when I confront other players. I expect to be killed when I am attempting to trade. If they followed me, saw me enter my base, and then followed me in to kill me, that's okay because I slipped up and they were clever. I do not expect to be killed because every player gets the ability to see through 40+ blocks, straight through dirt, straight through cobblestone, straight through rock, and see my exact position.
It is a poor design, and it needs changing.

I agree. However, our Minecraft character is a digger that puts fortresses of dwarves to shame, can shoot faster than a brigade of elves, and can survive an in-human amount of blows. X-ray vision seems like something that he might have.

You have a good point. No player can very well be kept from killing you if they really want to. Mr. Minecraft is too superpowerful.
I agree. Even though I just started playing smp a few days ago, seeing the names makes it really easy to find people. You shouldn't be able to see the names through stuff (glass and water is understandable). I don't see any good solution for it though. Maybe an option to hide your name unless you're less then 10 blocks away?

You know whats funny about when you duck down? It looks like your showin your butt to them and he probably is going to make your names not appear when you duck down.

could really be used for any argument.
On that note, I bet the SMP code was directly taken from Creative's MP. Not to play the "still in Alpha" card, but I'd imagine its something that just hasn't been addressed yet.

I agree with this, except I would like it better if admins/mods would be able to toggle their xray vision on and off
I totally agree with this, in SMP if you arent PVP'ing, it is nice to see where people are so you can connect your tunnels, but in PVP it would be nice to be able to turn off
I agree. But I think it should be an option. if you WANT others to see your name, great (as somone mentioned, its good for connecting tunnels) but otherwise you should be able to turn it off.

Ya, making it outright disabled would detract from anybody's experience in a PvE server.
So it's fairly agreed then eh?
The stealth feature should have settings/controls.

agreed, option to turn it on / off so i can still connect tunnels and get my friends to rally to me if need be. I play on a pvp server aswell, and crouching in reeds for 5 minutes while waiting on the guy im watching to pass by isnt fun, id like to change position without moving 80% slower and if i accidently slip off my button, them seeing me and then we just start spraying arrows. I shouldnt be able to stalk him through 3 buildings either

I had a guy dig his way though my ceiling ( I was way underground) just to kill me and it was lame.
, and I never knew you can crouch to hide your name >.>

hide and seek could work. Just crouch.
I had one time when this guy went on a mass killing spree in the castle everyone was sheltering in. I hid in the walls. using shift.
but yea shift is to damn annoying to hold down constantly. I support.
