I'll be honest with you, my **** server is actually running better than before (using Ubuntu 10.04 and setting the RAM to 256-1000MB). I actually thought that this update optimized stuff better!
Then theres other things at play here. I'm unsure what exactly issues you are having but i've done several tests, with addons enabled/disabled etc - all problems for me point to save-all
I am seeing no correlation between map saving and performance issues. In fact, if anything the whole server runs way worse, eating up way more cpu constantly. When it performs saves may be enough for the lag to become noticeable, but something else has to be tying up the processor.
Let me report my experience with the new version, Hey0, Cuboid + GriefAlert, 2GB allocatd to the minecraft server.
The only difference with my previous setup is that now I also have GriefAlert. Previously, the server could be left running for days without problem. I admit it, there was less traffic, but still, it only crashed once in a month.
The new version start and run great, but fills up the ram slowly over time and once it's full it will eventually start sending overloaded message more and more frequently until it finally crashes. Running time are about 12hours, less if there is more activity. I got more than 12 player at once, some complaining of lags, other not. When the server crashed there was less than 4 player.
I hope we get a quick fix soon for that what looks like a "leak".
My server:
Athlon X2 something, 3GB ram, 2,25GB for minecraft
OS: Ubuntu 10.04 64bit
JAva: 1.6.0_18
Windows 7 Ultimate
all patches downloaded as of yesterday 10/31
java version 1.6.0_21
JDK Runtime Environment
McMyAdmin
Web Frontend Version 1.3.0.0 (Public release)
Server Backend Version 0.7.0.3 Professional
Lag on this server starts randomly, could be after 2 minutes or not for an hour. Chat lag is also intermittent, but generally is between 5-10 seconds when it happens. Save-All happens once per hour, but does not seem to affect/effect the lag.

Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity.
As an experiment try running a new nether world with monsters turned off so absolutely no creatures spawn.
I've been running that on my own server and haven't seen any real difference from before. However when I made the mistake of turning monsters on, my performance tanked and I was seeing several seconds of lag. If people are still seeing lag with monsters off while running non-nether servers, I have to wonder if it is the creatures in general that are the problem.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
What Kane_Hart says might sound stupid, but actually works. That and blocking buckets. No matter if it is water or lave. Buckets 1) don't work & 2) start lagging your server. Have 5 people start trying to use the buckets, and you'll have bricked your server in 10 seconds.
tried both, i know its not the buckets causing it because they have not even been created on the server and issue happens with both mobs on and off

Ok lets start collecting some Data on this. Post your machine specs, OS, java version and what mods / plugins you have aong with a report on any lag issues you have. Maybe we can find a pattern in this to help notch fix it?
CentOS release 5.5 (Final)
Linux version 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5xen ([email protected]) (gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-48)) #1 SMP Wed Sep 29 13:30:21 EDT 2010
java version "1.6.0_17"
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.7.5) (rhel-1.16.b17.el5-x86_64)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 14.0-b16, mixed mode)
Hey0's Mod with these plugins: MMPlugin,CuboidPlugin,QuickPort,Realms,CraftBook,BorderLands
Lag on this server starts randonly, could be after 2 minutes or not for an hour. Chat lag is always 40+ secs.
I had the same lag issues when just running the server without any mods at all.

wow notch...
first, i kinda like the update. its awesome and all...it also led to my new favorite saying, wtn (what the nether)
...but... it kinda seems like a downdate. :\
Yes, in the server I regular, it is laggy to the point where the world stops generating, and I can walk off the edge of the map where there should be land.
Hey people!
I think i found an awesome simple solution!
If you are running windows, try to Ctrl+Alt+Del -> Processes -> Right click on Java.exe (NOT JAVAW.EXE!!!), and set "Set Priority" to "High".
I know this sounds noob and way to simple, but my server just STOPPED all the lag :ohmy.gif:
Let me know if this works for you Windows Users guys! :biggrin.gif:

Good Luck!
You are experiencing a different problem related to cpu contention.
This doesn't fix the problem on servers with lots of players.
Just wanted to add it's not just pure fix disabling mobs it helps. I think in general there is a looping bug causes issues BUT also I think the standard AI is causing lag also pigs and sheep and stuff even if you don't see them.
Make that worse my 16,000x16,000 world being explored by 50+ Online first time it really adds up. Were not doing to bad but it really sucks.
I would like to see a start on disabling animals also.
Seams to have 10 fold the amount as before and maybe not really 10 fold but I think he was playing with them as in the past it seam the spawns were really broken for animals but now it seams heavy and I noticed a bug on the spawns before being very limited so yeah I'm guessing things are adding up..
To me it feels like he tried getting progress on several things but did not finish them and they all crap out adding to the lag.
Call me stupid but it's just how I feel and see it.
I cannot get our server to work at all *period* because of this. We have been working on it for a week trying different combos between vanilla and hMod or others but anytime we connect to the server we immediately lag and see lots of drop off cliffs (unloaded chunks) that do not fill in for a few minutes. Commands take several minutes to respond.
The machine is no slouch, and neither is the connection. So we are utterly puzzled (even after the friday update) at how to get SMP to work ourselves.
Our server is having this issue to, but like others have said, I think it is also due to animals and mobs. I turned mobs off and I made a artificial hell in my server. When people go there, they don't lag at all. But, when they are above ground, they start to lag. We think its because there are no mobs at all in hell. But there are many generated above ground by everyone walking and exploring.
Is anyone else's server crashing more often also?
