Hey, so I have been running a smp server for a while now but since the halloween update I have had nothing but issues with lag happening every 30 odd minutes and the only fix for it is to restart the server. Once the server is re-started everything works fine for another 30 minutes then the issue happens again.
Lag being blocks un-breaking, waiting 10 seconds, re-breaking then providing cubelets.
The computer runs windows 7.
Quad core 2.5ghz processor. cpu usage stays well below 10 percent when lag is present
2gb ram, sits around 1gb in use when 3 people are on the server.
the only thing running on the computer is the server and basic windows processes.
Im really just wondering if this is a server issue or a computer issue.
This even happens when connecting to the local network.

Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute, and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute. THAT'S relativity.
What Kane_Hart says might sound stupid, but actually works. That and blocking buckets. No matter if it is water or lave. Buckets 1) don't work & 2) start lagging your server. Have 5 people start trying to use the buckets, and you'll have bricked your server in 10 seconds.
This has been happening to the server I go on as well. I gave up even trying to do any work on it.
Also, while moving my chests closer to my current project, several of my tools and items we deleted in the process. This is very frustrating. Hope Notch can fix it soon.
3.0 Ghz Quad Core processor, 8gb of RAM, and I have these awful lag issues which occasionally fix themselves.
I would turn monsters off but my server is shut down until SMP damage works. Hopefully when that happens I can allow my server to access more memory or.. something. to fix the lag.
Yes, I meant I would turn monsters off but to do that would make the game a fancy build game. I didn't get this game to have Garry's mod, I got it because its a lot better than that, or could be. But the thing that separates it is largely monsters and surviving by various means.
cool, at least this means that I don't need to re-install windows XD

I run two servers. They both have Hey0's mod installed. Both machines are on Windows 7 Home Premium, both are 64-bit. One has 6GB Ram, one has 4GB Ram, but since I start the server with -Xmx1024M -Xms1024M -jar Minecraft_Mod.jar I don't think that's a relevant consideration, since both are only using 1 GB. Both servers have approximately equivalent pings from a third party, so I don't think the issue is a connection-based one.
The one with the 4GB RAM one works smoothly and uninterrupted since the Halloween patch, while running Hey0's mod. There is no intermittent extreme lag, and when you /home or /warp to places, the chunks load in immediately around you. You can place or destroy blocks without difficulty.
The other server, with the 6GB RAM, has been having these tremendous lag issues. Blocks placed immediately dissapear, and chunks almost never load so you're always standing near the edge of the world.
Looking at the differences between the two, the one that works is running Java version 1.6.0_13. The one that does not is running Java version 1.6.0_21. I'm going to try and see if I can roll my Java version back to _13, to see if that might not be the root of the problem.
We've also had problems with bouts of extreme lag on our server. Before the Halloween update we were hosting an average of 50 people with custom coding without a sweat, and now it gets unusably laggy with around twenty people on.
The lag is on the force saves, the default "force save" is set for 30 minutes.
So when you start the server, it goes to force save 30 minutes into it. I'm unsure the fix for this, it does not look to be plugin related or windows related.
When stopping a server, it is now taking 2-3 times longer to stop the server - it hangs on 'saving chunks' this is the same process that 'save-all' or force saving the map goes through.
I haven't narrowed it down to a plugin but we feel our map size is very large and it may be that, but since others are reporting the lag, im assuming its the update.

2 day old map, only 80mb large and lags on save-all
lagged when it was brand new (10mb) as well...
While I don't doubt that server saves induce a considerable amount of lag, pinning all of the blame for the current server issues on it is jumping to some extraordinary conclusions, considering that the server I run that formerly accommodated 40+ people is having an almost consistent 1-2 minute chat lag and is failing to load chunks, even with interval saves disabled.

Sorry, bad habit.

doesn't work Kane, read the other threads, random CPU and mem spikes for no reason..mob or no mobs.
lol nice catch

Edit: Or was, at first. Once 3 more people got on, it rapidly degenerated into a mess of unloading chunks.
For reference, this server previously was hosting 40+ people pre-Halloween patch.
