This method trumps any other in existence for farming obsidian on an SMP server with Llamamod on it(DOES NOT WORK IN SSP) and can be done from anywhere in the world that has a flat piece of land (created by myself after hours of research):
Requirements: Diamond Pickaxe, Bucket
[] = Empty Spot
= Cobblestone Block
= Two Stacked Cobblestone Blocks
= Lava Placed With Bucket
= Water Placed With Bucket
Step 1) Build a structure that looks like this:
[]
[]
Step 2) Use a bucket of lava in one of the empty middle tiles, making sure to drop it on the TOP INNER side of the tile. Do the same for the other empty tile, but instead using a water bucket, again drop it on the TOP INNER side of the tile. It should end up looking like this:
This structure is now used as an INFINITE source of both water and lava. When you extract one of the two, stand on one of the stacked cobblestone blocks and face directly down into the water/lava. If you extract it from the side, it will not regenerate, you MUST extract it from directly above, facing downwards.
Step 5) Drop a bucket of water on top of the middle tile and then stop the flow of water by placing another tile at the source. Every lava tile will be replaced with obsidian. Mine the obsidian then rinse and repeat steps 4 & 5.
NOTE: You could probably add another layer or more to this pattern to create more obsidian per group, but I have not tested to see if the water spreads far enough, needs confirmation.
It's not the Ultimate Obsidian Usage Guide, though. You see, I'm already ahead of you in research! Just make the infinite water/lava springs near your build site and cast the Obsidian where you want it to be. Then you won't spend 15 seconds per block.
This method is not recommended to people that don't plan out their builds to a certain extent. Messing up means a lot of time spent removing Obsidian you don't want to be there.

Exactly.

There is no greater crime against humanity than the intentional preservation of the weak and incompetent.
Yeah you go ahead and try building obsidian towers without having to mine the obsidian. Your method might work for cube houses or a flat floor/roof but you would NEED to mine it using the above method if you are planning on creating a half decent piece of architecture like a "circular" tower or spiraling obsidian staircase etc etc. This also wouldnt work with any obsidian/wood hybrids unless you like to spend more than 15 placing the dirt in specific hard to reach places to prevent the wood from burning up.
And yeah, unfortunately I only confirmed it working with Llamamod. I went onto 3 different servers and tested it out and it worked so I thought I was onto something, didn't realize they all had the mod oh well back to the drawing board.

Don't go back to the drawing board, you can ONLY do this on servers that run those mods NOW...once buckets are fixed by Notch, then this method will work everywhere, so it's still a win. Well done!

Monkey Mines is a small 18+ Whitelisted Realms server that also allows families. We're currently looking for new players if they're not jerks.
Let's hope that is the case. Everything works besides the creation of the infinite water/lava station.
Going to do a bunch of testing in SSP to try and see if there is an easy way to create infinite lava/water sources without having to go to the ocean or bottom of the map. I don't think anyone has been able to produce something like this in SSP (which is the "perfect" version of the game). Will post results here.

If this was of use to you.
You want to get super creative, you could raise the structure in the air, and build 4 more underneath it at the corners, and let the water run off the sides (with some slight modification to the original pattern) to those 4 structures.
Never thought of that, technically this can go on ad infinitum then as long as you have the space.
Still trying to figure out how to create a renewable source of lava in SSP though.

Uh, it's rather easy to do walls. You just put dirt around where the wall will go to make a casing, working your way up as you cast the Obsidian. It's like a progressive mold.
Where did I say anything about walls? Have you thought about casting in tall structures? You are speaking in its current state where you can't die.. Assuming health is added then you will be safer mining the obsidian using my method as casting them in place while at a height that may cause death is just not worth the hassle, especially considering that you have to blocked off every direction of the lava flow. Again, you also speak as if someone were building a cube or flat floor/roof. Can you imagine having to cast the obsidian when building a large tower, or a spiraling staircase or a sphere or anything that ISN'T flat? I've already tried your "casting" method and it takes FAR more time to coordinate, plan, and collocate the dirt blocks for each piece of obsidian than if you were to actually just mass produce a bunch of them and then just hold down the mouse button, and thats not even taking into consideration the potential death from falling. I think I'll stick to my method, yours might work for short flat structures and using the current infinite life system but for everything else, farming it is the way to go.
A truly talented craftsman uses ALL of the tools at his disposal. Neither method is perfect, and both have their own merit, in differing circumstances. I, personally, use BOTH methods in all of my obsidian workings. The 'Cast and Cut' method is very useful for the finicky details, and allows more breathing room for mistakes. The 'Pour and Set' method excels at those easy shapes, such as foundations, and ceilings.
It is SOMETIMES faster to cast and then mine 'loose' obsidian, thank it is to build a mold. It is also SOMETIMES faster to build the mold! Rather than preferring one method to the other overall, you should be thinking about which method is best suited for the task at hand. You should also be experimenting with new methods to make other tasks easier.

If this was of use to you.
I place whatever liquid and it stays, then goes away.. I thought buckets were still bugged?
Also, why would you "farm" obsidian? Anyone with half a brain would know that it's easier to make dirt molds and just cast the obsidian on site.
This method is not recommended to people that don't plan out their builds to a certain extent. Messing up means a lot of time spent removing Obsidian you don't want to be there.

'Elmer Fudd Blues' Still tragically lethal.
I already knew about casting far before you mentioned it Ptero, and have been using it for flat walls/floors/roofs for months.
Like I said, if you need to FARM obsidian for whatever reason, the best way to do it is in the first post.
