Why not build some kind of easily-griefed structure right next to the spawn point and write a server-side script that bans anyone who tries to destroy it?
I was wondering if a "leap of faith" sort of thing could work. Have multiple deep shafts that flare out at the bottom into pools which can't be seen from the surface. However, only one shaft would have a pool at the bottom (which you can change each time), and so works like a really basic combination code. Health would have to work obviously. The exit can be a boat/water elevator which is to deep to sink down to.
Of course once someone knows you have stuff down there, they can just dig or climb down the shaft, but it makes it annoying for them, as you can just zip down.
I'm thinking of implementing just the first bit under my monastery I'm building. Only the monks shall have access to the secret library, as only they have enough faith!
Also, the regenerating wall idea would be pretty cool if someone could get it to work.
Could notch possibly one day program in something such that, if you have created a structure out of, say, glass, wood, stone, etc (anything but dirt or sand probably), it calculates whether it's a house by checking whether it has doors, and is almost entirely surrounded and hollow... then designates that area as being unmodifiable by others? When it's activated you'd get a message like "Home now secured!" and it would stop anyone else from digging up into it or digging in the walls.
Maybe it's unrealistic and hard to perfect, but, I can imagine a rudimentary system that just checks if something is a hollow rectangular prism and decides it's a house.

Ban everyone but yourself.
The two statements are synonymous. No questions.
I don't see why literally everybody on a given server would try to destroy something like that. And if they do, why they don't deserve to be banned for it.
And I didn't mean literally right next to the spawn point as in within ten blocks of it, I just mean make it noticeable to griefers as soon as they spawn.
ok, this is my idea, some may not like it, but it solves alot of problems
how about in SMP it takes much more time to even lay down one block? that will solve maybe pvp problems where people could just spam blocks everywhere, and there could be an emote of working on the block
2nd,how about notch makes it to take time to tear down a block, and u need a special tool, and in using this tool it emits some sort of loud sound? and the better the block, longer it takes, something such as stone could go from a second, to mayby even 20 seconds just to get through, this could help with not only burglary, but if people are into kingdoms against other kingdoms and they want to make castles with walls..defences..etc.etc..

Maybe I should build a bunch of house around and on top/bottom to block your house.
I wonder why more people don't play on private servers their friends have made.
Because not everyone has IRL friends that play Minecraft. Also, I'd like to face the challenges that griefers and Nazi server admins put in front of me.
If you like nazi admins and retards, may I recommend you check Garry's Mod.
I didn't explicitly say I liked them, but sometimes you have to face them. I already have to face one ban-happy mod who is so bad that the server admin admitted it, but have not demoted her.
I'm new here, but in my experience deception prevails over indestructiblity. Imo, the best way would be to hide it and then have an seemingly obviously way in to whatever you are trying to hide, and then have that trapped so that they are either blown up or have lava dropped on them if they use the obvious way. Then you have a less obvious and hidden way in to it that only you would know.
I LOL at you all. A fortress's best defense is the people that man it. No undefended wall will keep everyone out.
Yes, but you can't exactly defend your fortress (or trust other people to do it for you) when you log out, hm? Sure, you could store valuables in your inventory, but what do you do when you have too much stuff?
I'm starting to believe that it's impossible to create a true impenetrable (or unfindable) fort short of building an adminium house with no door, and some kind of teleport (/sethome, or Runecraft waypoint that only you know). Perhaps this was how the game was meant to be played - the players have the challenge of setting up defenses and traps that will hopefully keep thieves away, or kill them before they get to your stuff.

People are warned to shred the earth to get away from you before you have lost your marbles.
I just found a naturally occurring waterfall in dirt, some ways up I dug a small hole that went two blocks back, then one block down, placed my chest in there.
It's impossible to see from the ground, hard to see from even in front of it...
As you ride the waterfall down if you're quick enough you can activate the chest, while you're fiddling in the chest the waterfall takes you further away from it, eventually into the lake below where it pushes you away horizontally.
All other players see is you standing around in the water while you're fiddling in your chest.

This is where I will keep my vast treasures and riches. Nothing suspicious here.
This is the building's foundation, I'll just let you use your imagination on how far down that goes.
What's thi-
No treasure for you
That must be hell to repair. To such an extent that triggering the trap would be a worse case of griefing than stealing your treasure o_o

idk i just thought this up a second ago lol
Indeed, overkill was kinda the point though! This was really just for fun lol

Private servers or Single Player only. :tongue.gif:
definitely a good laugh. haha...
krisst
Haha, I still play that every once and a while..
Hey, I'm new here.
What can possibly valuable that you'd wanna go through the trouble of making that? (Could be useful for a clan/village though)
ALSO, a fortress is a visual, "HERE I AM!" If you are trying to hide your stuff, a fortress tends to defeat that purpose.
Later this evening I'll post some pics of the server I'm on, showing how I have built a hide away that no one will see or know about.
Haha, wonderful! It's not exactly Impenetrable though.
