Kinda like that, the illustration is not perfect but its just for it to get better to understand:
First you make a deep, deep tunnel downwards, and then go to the direction of a ocean or lake, and build your base/storage there. It will be pretty hidden, and even if the thief discovers where is it, he wont be able to dig it because he will drown if he does so.
You will have to focus in hiding the tunnel entrance though... And you could put a minecart in the tunnel to your base for you not have to take hours just to get there.
tl;dr: a base made underwater so no one will have the lungs to dig there.

Don't forget that when damage is back, that long shaft is gonna hurt you when you hit the bottom. I suppose you could fix that with a ladder though...

Monkey Mines is a small 18+ Whitelisted Realms server that also allows families. We're currently looking for new players if they're not jerks.

You forgot about the sand roof.
Anyway,
Make two walls of cobblestone and sandwhich lava inbetween the walls; Including the ceiling and floor.
Make a 1x1 hole in the floor and keep lava from getting in it.
Now, AROUND the base, find a recgocnizble tree.
Dig a small tunnel under it (like the diagram above).
Make sure that it gets into the 1x1 lava-free hole;
Boom! Secret entrance.
Of course, this will only work with damage enabled, as the griefer can easily waltz through the lava.
If you want extra protection,
Inside of the house, you would want to make an island around the 1x1 hole; surrounded by lava.
GRIEFER:
Mwa, I bet this has treasure in it.
*digs through wall*
OSHT, IMMA ON FIRE!
i'll just get these treasures real quick and jump in the lake.
*jumps through wall*
OSHT, I JUST JUMPED INTO A POOL OF LAVA!
Gotta...swim...to...island...

Naturally, the guy would go for the dirt, and step back (in case of lava etc.), right? Well, the dirt item falls into the pit, activates a pressure plate, and the entire ground around the fort goes BOOM. Landmines should never be only 1 TNT. What you need to do is make a large area with connected TNT, just enough so they can't run.
My personal castle in my server has walls like this:
Just for teh lulz. Sadly I have abandoned work due to boredom (yeah... try building a 66x66 castle out of obsidian and lava).
Random wall design...

Got an idea about the entrance...
You make your fort underwater.
Something like this.
Swimming animals

The only weak point would be a tunnel, with a stone entrance or something like that, but it would be filled with water so no one would be able to get there and break the entrance (because when you're underwater it takes much longer for you to break stuff).
Well this is more against griefers, because I think (I THINK) Griefers are dumber than thieves who plan and probably know the game well.
"But how to I get in?" you ask. You get in by gettin into the entrance and putting reeds on the tunnel and using a bucket to drain the remaining water. Reeds are natural watergates in minecraft, the player can pass throught them, but water can't. So that's why players who don't know how reeds work won't be able to get to the entrance.
just put the door within the wall, so that it's like this:
[]
[]
= door
That way if they destroy the door, it'll get them anyway.
You almost had it.
Having 2\3 doors prevents them from placing redstone torches to just "hack" the lock. The lava layer should be made appropriately thicker to accommodate the extra doors.

There is no greater crime against humanity than the intentional preservation of the weak and incompetent.
For no one ever find out where your base is, you could do like me and some friends did:
We spawned and then I dug the ground in the shape of an arrow, and put dirt there for it to be more recognizable.
Then we walked on OTHER direction...for one or two ingame days.
So anyone trying to look for something in your server to grief, should go to the wrong direction and be lost...
spellblade academy? i heard you talk about spellblades on the runecraft thread, is that a server on mp or a singleplayer map?
Two servers have them. Infinicraft and the Avalon RP
Both of them are led by me.

Obsidian door. Make it indistinguishable from any other part of the wall. Damage comes out. Stock your keep with arrows.

Every time you want to enter, you go towards that tree (make sure that there are no trees nearby, so you recgocnize it) Look around, make sure no one's watching...
Install a ladder in that blank space, and hide your offline treasures in there.
As for a wall, how's this for the award for "Most annoying to bore through"?
Sand faces outward, obsidian inward.
It's ugly, but it prevents the greifer from flooding the base with lava (instead, with easy-to-clean water) as well as cooking any attempts to burrow in from the outside.
Dig under the sand and place a torch at the bottom. Then destroy the block holding the sand up.
This will destroy all of the sand at once. I use this to mine beaches and get rid of annoying gravel areas. :biggrin.gif:
mining obsidian unwater even with a dimond pick takes at least a few mins this will at least deture most greifers if not stop them entirely the only promblem is a way for you to get in
couldnt they just create a blocked off section on top then fill it with dirt or something to remove the water. once the water is gone they are standing on top of obsidian in the air with only a short time mining and they are in.

Redstone torch for first door. Place dirt blocks to clear lava from vicinity (a little tricky, but should be doable thanks to acting through the windows). Destroy door. Repeat as needed.
After you are done, work your way back. No one would even know till they found their items missing.
Another weak point to these forts is the wiring to input combos into the door. Wherever there is a wire/switch, there is a good chance you can tunnel through with little effort.
Interesting topic here. So far, the best layout, from what I've seen so far, is something like this:
[]

If you destroy a door, you've got lava all over the place. The blocks under the doors should also be furnaces, so there's nothing to build blocks off of anywhere. The obsidian could actually be any material, such as just natural stone, it's only real purpose is to keep the lava from flowing all over the place. Ideally you'd just build this all underground anyways. The furnaces should be far enough away from the edge that you can't break them without entering the lava, and if you're in lava you're not going to live long enough to break them anyways. If it's not far enough, you can just make the lava walls thicker to compensate.
The main problem I can see is how to power the doors, since unless I'm mistaken, a switch will only power the nearest door. Could you somehow create a redstone circuit setup to handle this?
Hmm, maybe you could use a setup like this for the door:
[] []
= Door
= Lever
The top two doors should face up, while the bottom one should face down. It's purpose is not to block people, but instead just to keep lava from flowing in should the first two doors be destroyed. The blocks below all this should be furnaces, which I believe you can place doors and switches on if you place a bit of dirt near them (during construction) and then place the door targeting that block instead of the floor. For the switches, place the dirt above the furnace and place it targeting the bottom of that dirt block. This works for torches at least, I'll have to do some testing to see how it works with doors and switches I suppose.
but then, where theres a will there is a way. if a greifer is seriously pissed off or motivated to mess your stuffup, he/she will put their mind to it and no obsidian/lava/sandtrap is going to stop them i'm afraid to say.
Probably. But if they're really THAT determined...well what did you do to **** them off? Even a simple obsidian box will be enough to ward off most griefers. You also get the satisfaction of making them spend that much effort just to steal, what, a few diamonds? At some point it becomes easier to just mine a bunch of diamonds the old-fashioned way.
More than anything though, it's just a fun thought experiment. If I ever do make one of these it'll be just for fun and to show off to my friends, maybe challenge them to break in and try to steal the single block of dirt out of the lone chest inside it. XD
