Wouldn't be too hard, if I ever find the time and nobody does it before me, I'll look into it. The only problem I can think of right now is, how to get the infos from the serverlist. Can't think of a nifty solution for this. :/

It's nice to be able to see something like this debated rationally, and a good alternate solution coming from it instead of the usual flame wars internet forums tend to have. Kudos, fellas.
Some very good points to be sure. And Notch said "There will be an official API for mods. The current system is Bad." recently on twitter too (and someone else commented he's apparently said this before), so, that's really enough for me. And it makes a lot of sense that mods would be frowned upon in alpha when the game is volatile and could change wildly at any time and invalidate a bunch of work (and if he officially approved mods, people would probably feel entitled like he was breaking their mods).
Perhaps instead of modifying the client, someone can make a program that connects to the Minecraft Alpha Server list and checks which servers are online or offline (and maybe how many people are on, and add a favorite server list) to where if you just click on a server it copies the IP to your clipboard so you can just paste it in Minecraft. With some sort of fancy Minecraft theme'd GUI.
Talk about turning lemons into lemonade. This is a fantastic idea. You also wouldn't be constrained by any limitations of the game engine itself and its likely to continue working patch after patch after patch. You sir, just turned this thread into diamonds. You man you.
Thank you. XD
I'm sure I'm not the first who has thought about this, though.
Also, one other thing, I see a lot of programs have a launch Minecraft button, if this server program is ever made, maybe add that little function as well. (And where the file is located just in case someone is using that Minecraft portable program.)
Think of it as a challenge for future programmers. Plus, there is a lot of things Notch said he is going to add to the game, but it doesn't stop modders from adding it first. Just like the decaying leaves fix, things like this may be temporary but they are sweet while they last.
You are all thinking wayyyy to hard if you ask me, why not just do a lot more simpler idea and just basically connect the multiplayer function with the redstone server list page so when you hit multiplayer the server list comes up and ya just click the server and bedone with it

I'd like to update, but given notch's position on client mods I'm not going to.
That's a shame. There's no reason this isn't a permanent feature, and by creating it, you've shown that there is high demand for such a powerful improvement. By jumping ship, you're saying that you don't really think it's worth pursuing, and you really should show more pride in your work. Don't take this as an insult, because what I'm saying is that the quality of your work is too high to be discarded just because someone said they thought it was premature or a bad idea.
At any rate, if you won't fight for the cause, someone else will. For the sake of people who have come to depend on a mod like this, Seronis has built a server history tool. It's a little rough around the edges, but it gets the job done. viewtopic.php?f=25&t=54593
It is a shame, yes, but it is his decision to "obey" Notch. :wink.gif:

Notch said he would add a serverlist-thing to the game soon, so it would be kinda pointless to go and make one...

Thanks for adding that. I stand by my position, but that's really helpful and I appreciate your taking the time to post that.
