I, with quite a bit of help from the lovely folks on my server, have recently started a project of fairly epic proportions. I figured I'd make a thread to show the world it's progress with a series of WIP screenshots as we trudge onwards. When you read the name 'Dragon Colosseum' and your imagination starts throwing together an epic illistration of what that might look like, that's exactly what we're doing... Only a bit blockier since your imagination is probably a jerk and has nice rounded corners.
Some notes I'd like to make clear now: We DO spawn materials. I'm a mod on the server and keep all my helpers supplied with smoothstone and such. I can /give in my sleep at this point. Some may consider this illegitimate and what not, so please save me the lecture on how I'm what's wrong with Minecraft, etc etc. Our server has done quite a few large projects without spawning, so I'm to the point of wanting to make more cool stuff and minimizing the amount of giant holes I dig in the ground... And save some time.
Also the server's cartographer only updates once per day at 5 AM Dallas time, so I'm simply using cartographer shots to show an 'end of day' sorta thing.
Without further delay, screenshots + commentary.
Day 1:
The flat grass area known as "gm flatgrass" was dug out earlier in the week, the original plan was to use it for 2fort, but we decided that wasn't a great use for the space and tore down what little work we had done on it. Then I mapped out the original circle for the colosseum. It's 125 blocks in diameter. Work started late in the day so that's about all that gone done.
Day 2:
At some point I decided that 125 in diameter simply wasn't enough and planned to double it. Instead I stopped at 201 because there were just so many mountains and I didn't want to clear them all. =P
Day 2 was spent mapping out the circle and doing a LOT of digging. Wouldn't have got done without the help of everyone's assistance.
We cleared out the last few mountains and then did the floor. Sand for the inner fight arena, stone for the outer ring which is eventually the inside areas. Seating goes above that.
This was a fun day of more wall building, gate building and ROOF LAYING. I have a new found hate for roofs. At some point one of the guys helping, BrilliantPsycho, said something along the lines of "Man, I wish damage wasn't bugged so I could jump off and kill myself." Regardless, most of the roof got done.
1. Roof from above. 2. Roof from below. It's big. 3. Gate from the inner arena. Yes, it's big. Dragons are big sooo... 4. Stairs for spectators in the main lobby. Mostly for people who keep falling off the roof/walls right now. ;P 5. And we have a path now! :smile.gif:
Day 5:
1. Mapping out cages for dragons. Not sure how big they'll end up being. 2. Much prettier entrance was put together. :smile.gif:
Due to a lovely glitch in the server, it needed to be restarted, however: It didn't save most of the chunks the colosseum occupied. More time spent to redo the entire roof, and a different entrace was put up.
3. New entrance. Better than old one? Need opinions.
Those of you who are observant might have noticed the planks surrounding the area... Not really sure why they laid hardwood down over the entire field out front but I'll probably tear it up. =\
End of day;
Until stairs get done it's just going to look like a displeased tire with varying paths out front. :s
Day 6:
Actually got stuff done. One side of cages is basically done, lighting still needs a LOT of work. I'll be installing some skylights once the seating is done.
1. Small cage 1 & 2. Will be occupied. 2. Large cage 1. Empty, occupant will be in arena. 3. At some point we decided to move the door around so it lines up with the stairs better. Entrance is basically in shambles. 4. Dragon statue. :biggrin.gif: 5. Artistic fog shot! :biggrin.gif:
Day 7:
A week in and going strong. Tidied up the blue statue. Built the red. Yes, they're symmetrical. Work done on the upper parts of the colosseum and seating. The cartographer shows it off much better. Screens up.
1. Upper walkway of the colosseum. 2. Staircase for getting up and down rows of seats. No seats yet though. :3 3. The second dragon statue, in red. :smile.gif:
Cartorapher made a little whoospie it appears. That should correct itself tomorrow, for now just use your imagination to complete the circle. The current 'outer' wall is to the build limit. :smile.gif:
Day 8:
Very very minimal colosseum work. I think I added a few layers to the outer wall. Played with sand instead.
Also cartographer is still not rendering those chunks properly.
Day 9:
Picture's worth a thousand words?
1. Seats! Only half the colosseum has seats, but hey, THERE'S SEATS! :biggrin.gif: 2. View of seats from top-down. 3. The little tunnel we added so you can get to the other side of the stairs lol. 4. The outer wall is completely up (64 blocks high) and the roof is up there too, I'll get a pic of that later or something.
Also reworking the front path for the 3rd time, entrance will be up tomorrow. Progress is going swell. We might even be done before September ends. ;P
Chunks still aren't getting mapped properly there. :sad.gif:
Day 10:
I feel like this project is never going to end.
1. Seats are completely done. HUGE shout-out to Carme. He is a wizard of circular seating. :smile.gif: 2. New (closed) gate has been installed for the whelps. 3. Whelp prototypes. There was a third but it was small and cobbly and I moved it to add the gate. 4. Whelp cages. 5. Staircase up to nursery. 6. Nursery overview. 7. Back corner of nursery. Dirt was just a trial material. Eggs will be made of cloth or snow or diamonds or something. Growing that wheat stuff underneith it is proving to be a pain though. 8. The idea behind those hatch things seen in picture 6. My theory was the dragons hatch from their eggs, trainer would pull that trap door thing up and toss it down into one of the cages, basically. Thoughts on that? <_>
No cartographer screenshot because there has been no exterior change as far as I know... Might have moved the path again, I've lost track. :smile.gif:
Day 11:
06/09 - working..
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
And lastly, credit where credit is due! I take full responsibility for making such a terrible decision and thinking a Dragon Colosseum was a good idea, lol. The main design is mine but everyone is throwing in their creative bits here and there to make sure it's shaped into something awesome.
pjspeedy - Main Build Manager. Minister of Mining. I'm not sure pj sleeps.
Cartina - MiningBot9000. Assistant Design Master. Tons of building.
HikariMistako - My BFF and key builder guy. He does lots of stuff. :smile.gif:
BrilliantPsycho - Circle Guy. Helped make sure they were actually round. Also main roofing guy.
N4T45 - Miner, roofer, moral support.
Carmeops - Professor of circular stair dispersion and distribution physics. (Not sure if this is a real title).
steelsoldieruk - Mountain mover. Stone layer.
darknightdavy - Mountain mover. Stone layer.
dragonsteincole - Statue assistant, miner, also lava clean-up crew (my bad).
Other people who helped briefly with moving mountains: theredbee, Carmeops, ZombieJoe315, Sallen...
(I'm sure I'll update this when I remember who else helped. :3)
If you're reading this and have an awesome idea to improve this, please share. Mostly regarding the interior. We've got a lot of space in the spectator lobby and still quite a bit in the dragon handlers' quarters. What should go in there?

Nice project though, quite amazed at the pure scale of it...
You laugh at circle guy and circle guy laughs at me. >_>
I had to re-lay quite a few sections because I apparently don't know how to count.
Edit: also in recently development: Cartina went wandering to the edge of the world and some how broke the map/server since it decided not to generate things properly, server got reset, all progress today was basically reversed. Only a few chunks saved properly nearby.

End of day for Day 5 is up, as are pics for today (Day 6). Actually got quite a bit done. :smile.gif:

That's awesome!
I've done some fairly large projects but this.. ..This is on completely different scale of ginormity.
I can't imagine how long that will take to finish.
How many people are on your team?
I'll be watching this thread. :biggrin.gif:
Edit_1:
wow.. Imagine when Notch enables mobs in MP. :ohmy.gif:
It varies from day to day, from stage to stage. You can check the credits for a list of who's hepled thus far and with what (missing a few bits here and there, probably people too, but it's been busy lol). At any given time I've normally got 2 people helping me though. Generally 1 person gets stuck with grunt work (make these walls 20 layers higher) and the other person helps me with creative aspects.
I figure once we actually get this cage section done, it's only going to get easier since the opposite side is just a mirror, and this time around I know what I'm doing. :smile.gif:
Seating won't be too hard since it's just more circle making, then I have to do the hatcling nursery and the handler's quarters which also won't take too long. The main entrance still has a TON of space though and I have no idea what to fill it with. Any ideas?

i actually like it ^^ maybe make it to a gladiator like them that has like rubbles in the middle of the arena, ruins, lions made out of block or some thing LOL ^^ good job by the way with the arena ^^
@Vajrh: The middle will be a bit cluttered up by fall-out from the dragona duel within. Lions aren't really in the design plans, themed more with dragons. ;P
@Spiral: That large circle on the left is Schism? Or are all the circles in conjunction the city? The large one by itself is actually smaller than the arena.. To say it'll make it "look like a dot" is a bit of an exaggeration. Especially considering this thread is about my Dragon Colosseum. =\
End of day for #6 added, not much change, sorry. Pics for #7 are up, however, and look great. The cartographer is going to look quite a bit different after tomorrow morning. I'll try to ACTUALLY update it first thing in the morning instead of forgetting like I did today.

the whole thing is schism. And it's much more zoomed out, as the large circle is 250 across
Correct me if I'm wrong, but cartographer programs/scripts generate a 1:1 scale map. Each pixel is one block. Thus that large circle isn't even 200 across? My graphics editor puts it at 196 in diameter.
