The problem is many servers prevent lava from spreading other then directly down to prevent griefing so it won't work on many servers that do this and that's a good thing. :tongue.gif:

You are speaking of public servers. There's plenty of people who would never step foot on a public server, precisely for such reasons.
Of course, this is why I listed the mods we have on our server. llamacraft is on most public servers, and it has a whole lot of anti-grief options in it, including ways to prevent lava nightmares. For the average Joe who is setting up his own server, there is no "problem" at all. There is no law requiring all SMP servers to run any particular mod.
I'm really curious if anyone has tried this in single player.

This is why the instructions have a block beneath the lava to begin with, not only to place the initial lava source but also to make the lava flow to the sides around the first block. This support block is then dug out, letting the lava also flow directly downward. This creates an infinitely-regenerating source block.
It also works with water and is the best way to do it with a single original source bucket, but water tries so much more to form new source blocks that a regenerative source can be made much more easily using two source buckets but a smaller final footprint:
1. Dig a 1x3 trench and fill the center block:

2. Fill the end blocks to make two water sources.
3. Dig away the middle block. This will create a 3rd stillwater source at the center.
From here on out, pull only from the center source and it will always regenerate. If you wish to help prevent accidentally pulling from the side sources (which won't regen), you can place blocks above them.
EDIT: This only works with water, not lava. The method posted above is the smallest footprint regenerative lava method that I've found so far.
BTW, the lava regen "fountain" plus the 1x3 water "well" can be used for a very simple 27-block obsidian foundry:
It's just 27 holes in a checkerboard pattern out to a full distance that water will spread on a flat surface, filled from the lava fountain on the left, with a raised 1x3 water well beside it. (The water doesn't need to be a well, just a single source will do, but having a well is also handy for when you need more water.) Removing the dirt floodgate will create 27 obsidian blocks. Then just cap the well, dig out the blocks, and refill with lava.
Well, if you don't click on the block the lava is on, like the block behind it, the lava regenerates.
I used the method to make a massive obsidian obelisk.

Like I said, the servers prevent it from spreading other then directly down and water is easy to get working but a lot of decent servers with anti grief in place it won't work.
Also, this only works on servers with llamamod which pretty much makes mine and this thread useless when Notch fixes buckets.
I prefer to make a few lines of where I place the lava instead of the checkerboard for two reasons.
First off having to fall in each hole to get the ore is annoying and second I can read a book while I hold the mouse button down and let it mine in the line. :tongue.gif:
Kinda like this:

I do soil since the pick can easily destroy the stone to fast and leave the open spaces in front so I can drop down and mine right away while looking forward.
Just place the water tile on one of the side soil paths then remove it when done.

Get an area with flat dirt, and dig four holes:

Place a lava block on top of the center square. Dig out the dirt in the cube directly beneath the lava. Harvest the original lava block!

Stacking the lava source blocks do though.
