Where do you folks all think MC servers will be in 6 months, or a year or 2?
The spawn area will be long mined out, almost completely hollow. Only some sand and non-mineable blocks left, maybe some trees that a nice player or the admin plants to help newbies. BUt what of the first town? In a day, you can mine out almost an entire large island with 4 or 5 people working together. 4, 5 hours, pow - no more coal, iron, diamonds, or redstone on that landmass anymore. Gotta go to the next.
Fast forward a year.. will a player joining a veteran server for the first time be faces with a 20 minute minecart ride to the current locale in order to find other people? Will people be spread out over the whole 8x Earth, claming entire continents as their own? (I came across a lovely bay today after about 5 minutes of boating, with wild mushrooms all over the main island, and claimed it as my own nation, Bacon Bay, with the capital Mushroom Island, but I digress)
Will servers reset once every 6 months or a year to give the players a new challenge, or will 2 years down the line, everyone be using wooden weapons and tools, and building houses with cobblestone and dirt, as all the iron and diamond have long all been used up in tools and crafting? Will servers be ghosttowns, with not a soul to be seen for hours of travel, just empty, long-abandoned settlements left as temporary shelter for newcomers to have protection from the night?
Currently maps over 5gb cause severe physics glitches and wont run on most machines.
Also most players tend to stick to a location unless forced to move, i feel what will happen is during the day players will build structures, farm animals and wheat (as well as farming trees) and at night groups will go out and have little raiding parties. Or some of the members will just hole up in their houses.

But that's what I'm talking about.. before too long (still a few months tho), all the iron and diamond would be mined from every area within a 10-minute walk, and everyone's tools would be worn down (barring Notch implementing re-forging tools at the Furnace, WHICH WOULD BE AWESOME), and a few months after that, all that ore would be used up. Will people want a 40-minute round trip to their mine, or would they be more likely to pack up everything valuable and move their settlement?
I kinda think people would be more likely to move once the trek to resources gets to be a certain point.

These things will happen within a number of weeks, not a number of months. I guarantee it. The crowded, non-moderator servers will just be torn to pieces.

There are two types of people in the world: those who don't find this joke funny and those who are amused by self-referential humour.

Could you guys go five minutes without sigging me?
Nah, I don't think so. Unless a group trolls the server by mining out 200,000 blocks of cobblestone then no. You've got to remember that even medium sized mountains yield about 20,000 resources total, and since the earth is 64 blocks, every single block can yield about 20 iron pickaxes, so just one square around spawn, you could make about 500 pickaxes, or gather about 800 cobblestone, and it just increases from there.
Servers won't be hollowed out for a long ass time, players aren't going to be as active as they are during every update, but ATM they will be pretty ****ed, since the only thing to do other than making bland cobblestone bases is the GRIEF THE **** OUT OF EVERYTHING.
IMO...
~Soon~ (when bugs get fixed, inventory isn't client side etc.)
Most of the servers I've played on agree on a currency system (and bank), so banks probably would pop up. People get raided a lot.
~6 months~
The starting area is starting to get stripped of resources, there's a city/town going. Some players have formed their own city, some are living alone. I personally would have an underground tunnel system base possibly with friends.
~12 months~
Massive structures appear, the city is the only safe place. Raiders/bandits are everywhere etc. Some people begin moving to far away islands.
~24 months~
The land is stripped of its resources, most people move to distant islands on improved boats.
This is all assuming people would still play on the server.

On the one hand, I agree with some of the thoughts posted here, mostly about mining a location until it's completely out of resources. On the other hand though, it feels like you're assuming everything will be the same x months from now. For example, on the thought about a 20 minute minecart ride, I'd like to think there would be faster ways to travel implemented in the future, given just how large some servers may become. Airships perhaps? *dreams*
I like the idea of trade amongst cities, minecart railroads over a pit of nothing, city walls replaced by pits of lava wide as mansions to keep out griefers or otherwise sway the invasion of resource greedy foreigners.
Hope minecarts rails can eventually be placed and have whatever's under them mined out (or placed like blocks, next to eachother mid-air), so the rails can be supported by nothing and literally go over a void~
Doesn't you guys think it would be cooler if notch just had like 10 servers and we all had to be on one of them?
It gives the game a much more of a MMORPG aspect.
I mean I would love to have a little town with some friends and make a railroad to another little village to trade of just chill there.
Maybe if we play then long enough with all those people on one server there would be some kind of capital thing.
and if a newbie spawns he would be riding along 100's of towns and farm villages and stuff assuming notch creates more stuff to farm.
I would be an awesome experience. + PvP = win
If notch makes it like the creative mode you will have people separated from each other and world will be empty and people just hack all the resources true the admins.
I don't know what the minecraft community thinks about some epic worlds from notch and everyone needs to play on them or that + player own servers or just only player own?
Areas close to the spawn would be heavily urbanized and centers of commerce. All of the natural resources in those areas would be exhausted, but people would still have a reason to be there anyway for the trading, warfare, housing, and crime. Areas further out would be mining towns, and even further than that there'd be the frontiersmen. Rails would bring resources from the mining towns and the frontiers to the cities.
At least, that's how I'd like it to go down.

First, Ignatius used the rock.
Then Billy asked Harry if he wanted to read his BDSM blog. Harry was so surprised that his pants flew right off. He was wearing women's underpants. The inquisitors were wearing them, too.

reset is optional
you can load any map to your server
