I have never seen anyone who bought the game without a custom skin ever. It might just be my experience, but it seems stupid to have a fully customizable avatar and not use it. I don't see any other way to identify pirates.
I've just been playing single player. What's the point in changing your skin if no one can see it? Granted, I'll probably get around to changing it within the next week, but still. Automatically assuming someone pirated the game for that reason alone seems sort of naive.

This is stupid. Not only for the reasons mentioned above, but also because I can imagine that it is possible to have a skin with a pirated copy.
I have bought the game, and convinced three others to do so as well. I have the default skin.
Labeling others as pirates simply due to using the default skin is an extremely flawed argument. Taking it a step further and harassing/griefing those with the default skin is an absolute asshole move. Sure people with the default skin could be pirates, but they could also be people who don't care about skinning their character.
If anyone starts setting my constructions on fire, stealing my items, or killing me when that's implemented just for having the default skin, that makes them no better than the lawless griefers that we all seem to abhor so much. It's almost like when I resubscribed to EVE online solely to join the Rock Paper Shotgun corporation, but got swiftly banned to cries of "SPYYYYY" from their Ventrilo server, their community channel, and their corporation when the party they sent to pick me up got ambushed.
Don't let your paranoia ruin other legitimate gamers fun.

EDIT: The post above me has it.
