I'm not sure why I see a lot of people talking about servers and stuff like,
economies being created?
factions battling it out?
trade?
I don't understand how people think this game will EVER be in a state for an "open public" SMP to ever workout.
To make a game work in an open public server, anti-griefing, anti-cheat, and MOST IMPORTANTLY Clear set gameplay is required.
The thing about minecraft is there is no clear set gameplay. Its an open sandbox game.
And why would notch waste a lot of his precious time implementing anti-grief and anti-cheat measures when he could be adding content to the game?
I never really pictured playing this game with anyone except family and friends on a private server.
And I think Public servers will be too much hassle and frustrating for us as players, and Notch as developer that I don't understand why people think all the crazy stuff I mention above and more will ever happen?
A game doesn't need a set gameplay to be fun on public servers. The opposite is true - the more freedom you have in your game the more fun it is.
And Notch WILL add anti-grief and anti-cheat things. He claimed so himself.
But let me make it simple for you:
Grief and cheat make game no fun
Notch want make game fun
Notch get rid of grief and cheat
Game goes fun
And the "people" who said they want economy and castles and whatever to happen, are PLAYERS. That means they CAN DO THAT THEMSELFS
When you think of an idea for a game, you don't think of it as "yeah lets do this and then be forced into doing this, this and this. Then add a scripted event here and take away control from the player to show them some pretty animation then force them to do this"
You think of it as an open world with multiple paths of progression, people crave the non-linear sandbox gameplay. It's a fact.
Just because the game doesn't have strict rules, doesn't mean it won't be fun.
On my server 2 villages were established. There were only ever 2 griefers online. Both left pretty soon after being found out.

All-in-all there isn't anything to worry about.
