So I think I got in about 10 minutes after the server software was released. Forget which server it was - the guy hosting was on a laptop in Belgium.
Of course lag, yadda yadda, but this is amazing. That was the most brilliant multiplayer experience I've had in ages.
I wander away from the spawn area where someone is already building a "shop" (which is promptly robbed) and find a little pond nestled up behind a small hill. Not too far, really, I want to be found. 5 minutes later I've hollowed out a nice entrance into the hill and started mining, and have made the exterior noticeable with cobblestone and torches.
A guy named Damasuke2009 (I think) asks if he can help, and I say 'of course'. A beautiful online friendship of 30 minutes ensues. After enlarging the interior and beginning a few medium-sized shafts, I decide to start digging straight down. I need ladders, Damasuke provides them. Things are going great! Then the server crashes.
I find a new server and the perfect island. It even has an interior lake, a natural harbour! But that's another story.
