Why do I have an uncanny feeling that everyone that says "Durr hurr, i iz supoar radiur" isn't actually going to raid or attack at all?
And the few people who DO attack others in a civil manner (Give me your goods, or your life!) will get so bored from the seclusion and contempt they get from gentlemanly minecrafters, that they'll just give up on their pathetic views of "ANARCHY FOREVER, I'M ONLINE, TIME TO BE A MAJOR ****WAD!"?
Seriously. Does anyone else get that feeling?

Why cannot people be nice?
I will NEVER attack anyone unless they run to me with a sword/attack me first,
I will NEVER take anything from a chest i don't own,
i will NEVER go into a base/home/castle unless the owner is inside and gives me permission and
i will NEVER set forest fires.

If I wanted to be "nice" I'd join a Creative mode server (which I do, btw, nothing wrong with it).
Killing and stealing will be part of SMP. That's a given, and they are sandbox elements just as much as building and crafting are. I'm not going to go around killing and stealing at whim, I'll probably do it if it greatly benefits me or protects me. I'm also not going to "grief" unless it gives me an advantage. I'm not the type of person that destroys things just because I can. I do things if they give me an edge over another, and that only makes sense in a survival game.
Killing and stealing adds a whole new dimension to the game and gives a point for traps, building huge castles, defense, and territory control. Without these elements, I wouldn't even bother with single multiplayer. You can be "nice" and still kill and steal in a game. It just depends on your viewpoint versus their viewpoint.
Personally, I've been waiting for a survival type game like this for my entire life. Nothing like this, to my knowledge, has ever been accomplished, and by that I mean a sandbox world with PvP combat, crafting and territory control.

If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch... you must first invent the Universe.
If you don't want to be greifed or murdered just hide house or join one of the large castles or cities for protection.
If the city you join doesn't have a guard or law enforcement system, then to bad, DERP DERP.
How would you be able to establish a city if the 'raiders' just destroy it before the first building is done?
They can build weapons just as fast as you can... Build up a small weapons stalk before people come.
Can't anyone else wait to get banned from a server because some admin doesn't like people stealing his stuff when he never bothers to hide or defend it well?
What I plan to do in SMP:
Wage war, fight battles, capture enemies and keep them as prisoners of war, build a huge arena (I think you know where this is going) and make them fight to the death with mobs and/or other PoW. All while I sit on my solid golden thrown watching, as servants bring me wine(craftable with future grapes) and bread and cheese (from milk). ahh...the spoils of war...

Falling through a hole in the fabric of space/time isn't magic, just luck.

Unless, of course, the people in your server decide to be "hardcore" and put lava in your throne room, drown your army, murder all your prisoners, and kill you before you can offer your kingdom in exchange to live.
Well, I perfer that over "be a PoW who fights in an arena."
Yeah...I'd rather just pour a bucket of lava on myself. Or break out using my hands. (unless it's made of obsidian. In which case, back to the lava.)
What I'm scared of are land claim flags. For the most part, they're good. They offer some extra protection and provide a system of ownership. What scares me is what Notch said on Brocraft, basically that outsiders couldn't build in the claimed area(which is fine) and no blocks could be destroyed in the area(not so fine).
I think it would be great to have the flags make blocks in the area about 8x stronger, but not indestructible. That would generally keep out all but the most determined invaders or griefers. Indestructible blocks provide too much of an opportunity for abuse. Imagine some griefer placing these all around the spawnpoint with a wall of dirt hiding them. New/killed players would be trapped forever and quit the server. They couldn't dig their way out, and they can't destroy the flags hidden behind the walls.
Sure the flags would be difficult to make, and maybe the owner might have to pay an "upkeep fee" with the coins Notch said he would implement, but anyone determined to be a jerk could do it.
I always thought that it could disallow the flags to work if they come within the area of a spawn point.
I never heard that, but it would make sense. Even so, with enough time and determination, the wall could be made out far enough and big enough no matter what restriction was placed on the spawn. Although I will admit that most people probably wouldn't try this if it took more than four or so flags.
Flags would be good if it or the game recognizes which blocks the player put in the claimed land. That would allow what the player put to be indestructible but anything there before would be fair game.
Also, how will the flags work? Something like a 4 blocks radius, on the X and Y axis, to give you a square (8x8x8) to work with?
If I wanted to be "nice" I'd join a Creative mode server (which I do, btw, nothing wrong with it).
Ah yes, Creative mode. A venerable utopia of cooperative gameplay, completely devoid of griefing in any form. Truely, anyone who wishes to build something nice should stick to those servers, with all the other nice people.
When survival multiplayer comes out i want there to be scenarios like this:
Me and some other people are working together to make a base. Some have gone collecting wood, some are mining stone, others are gathering food. Suddenly an arrow flies through the air and lands on the side of the base; there is a note attached reading "Attacked by raiders, they have captured me. Help.". Suddenly everyone in the clan rushes to the main hall and prepare a meeting, 4 players (including me) go out to save the played captured, while others stay at the base. Unaware where the enemy base is, we pack torches incase the travels go through the night, cooked pork incase we get hurt, and iron swords. Walking along the direction the arrow was fired from we eventually stumble across a stone passage leading into a mountain, all of us sure that this is the raiders base we head inside. After walking along the passage we begin think this may not be their base and we begin to head back, only to be ambushed. There are about 6 of them, they outnumber us, but they don't out-skill us. Using our leet skills we manage to beat them. We walk out of the cave, having looted the raiders who attacked us. After a quick search around the mouth of the passage we find a secret entrance to the raiders real base. Walking inside through a hall, cautious of an attack this time. Once inside we find ourselves in a large cavern, no one in sight. Various signs are placed around the room naming rooms like 'Storage' and 'Crafting'. But the one that made us move was the one labeled 'Jail'. We all run over, anxious to see if our comrade is in there. Inside there are several cells, but at the real back we see *anonymous-player*. He calls out "Guys, you came to save me!". "Stand back" says *other anonymous-player*, placing a tnt block next to the cell. He hits the tnt and we all run back. *BOOM*. With the cell broken we help *anonymous-player* out of the rubble and make our escape, gathering some treasure before we leave. We see the light at the end of the hallway, we are 10 blocks away when suddenly more raiders swarm the exit. There are too many for us to defeat, so we all get out our TNT. Running towards them we place down TNT and activate them. Then we quickly run towards the exit, making it out just before the TNT explodes, propelling us forward. The raiders didn't make it out alive. When we get back to out base we hold a party in the food hall, drinking apple juice and eating pork chops and bread before settling down in front of the grand fire. Waiting for what the next day holds.

That wouldn't solve the problem of griefers exploiting it. If they wanted to be a **** they could log onto the server while no one else was on and wall off people's bases and then never come back to the server with that account.

Because humanity as a whole is generally selfish. I don't mean to be cynical about it, but it's true.
They can build weapons just as fast as you can... Build up a small weapons stalk before people come.
If you found one and fixed it up a bit (and cleared out any enemies), you could claim it as your own.
