Quick question, why make the vote anyway? you know that we need brownie point and the nether is shiny and new as opposed to some passive system to help the structural integrity of the server. We want all of these things, and people really don't care what order they just think nether is interesting and can't wait for it to be open...

I suppose it is to make people more active in the community. I know it isn't an elegant system, but this way I can at least see how many people are active in the community instead of loners. I don't like loners. They play as if on singleplayer on a multiplayer platform. I consider it a waste of space when someone goes off to a corner of the map, make a house and nobody knows who's it is when the thing becomes abandoned.
So the reason there was what looked like a portal is because I thought it would be good for when they work. Plz
un ban me, I'll never do it again Davehz. Please un-ban Ninja_Nine Thank U!

Its because your inconsistency makes you look like a weasel. You say that you set it down to make sure it isn't abused, but then why don't you put it in a chest, or throw it into lava? Making it shaped like a portal contradicts that too. Sorry, but the least you can do is make a good lie and unfortunately this one is completely transparent. Sorry, but it is unlikely you will be allowed back.

Honestly, for a long time I was a loner, the first few days of playing I tried to be active, I even did a lot of roadwork on on the first spawn, but every time I asked if people needed help I would never get a response, and whoever did need help required massive amounts of resources and it is still fairly intimidating to even ask. Now, some of my lurking was due to a buggy driver which didn't even let me play, but now that I am trying to get back into the community I haven't had as much luck as I have wanted.
On an unrelated note:
Not a big fan of how empty everything looks from spawn tower, I understand how useful the lack of buildings is and I'm all for keeping the ugly buildings away (last spawn looked bad), but it did seem busy and welcoming at least. Don't really want it changed, but just giving what my first impression was when I saw it.

I would not count you as a loner, I would count the people who did not respond.
As for spawn, what do you think should be there? I think a trade depot was suggested, and maybe moving the clan embassy there would not be a bad idea. Maybe, central train station. Also, A large building with a map of the roads or something.

Something I would think be cool that I would be interested in doing would be making a scale replica (flat) on the ground that essentially maps out major landmarks and recognized towns by denoting blocks and signs. Sort of an overhead view if you will, like minecraft cartographer, but just basic blocks depicting basic routes. Potentially making it multi-layered (top/above ground, bottom/railway) just to show where one area connects to another. Granted, this would have to be "grief proofed" but it'd look mighty neat, and it would give people an idea on which way they should head.
Another idea that would probably not fly due to the amount of people that don't clean up after they chop down trees, but make an essential city and clan embassy/advertising capital building, as well as perhaps a newbie starting grounds, perhaps a small mine coupled with tree farm (monitored/regulated of course) that would get the average new player to the server the tools and resources at their fingertips so they can start off on a prosperous career. Its fairly daunting when you cannot even chop down wood to make wooden tools when the first time you come onto a server, there are zero trees within a 4 mile radius, just random assortments of leaves (as the server first seemed to be back 3 or 4 maps ago when I first walked into vanillacraft)...
I'm not intending to say that I am a loner now, but between November 7th and December 1st I had no contact with the forums or the players, which is what I was trying to say. I was a loner and I understand why some people shy away from the community.
On the spawn tower issue, I think the idea of a newbie area is not entirely useless, we could make an engaging area that will introduce people to the team mechanics of minecraft rather than exclusively the gameplay mechanics. Maybe have simple public works contracts easily accessible near the spawn (roads, simple buildings, arches, lighting, deco, ect.) so they are immediately immersed in the multiplayer aspect. The only problem I'm having is finding a way to get those who are socially active in game to post in the forums...then again, I suppose that is the big mystery we are trying to crack at the moment :tongue.gif:.

I don't know... food for thought.
Those are good ideas, and I have already thought of all the solutions but one. Who will do them? Who will upkeep those things? Staff certainly won't, unless they take it like their own work, which I doubt since we all got our stuff. As for getting people on the forums, brownie point accounts with that also registrar with forum accounts that are made in game.
Uh just for clarity's sake, I did not wright that last quote, it was Warmack, thanks you for destroying the quote pyramid though.
The game Puzzle Pirates has normal players who sign up to be helpers of new people, so even though mods that are currently busy with their real jobs would not want to do this, you could invite residents who actually care and seek out this job. They already have their own motivations and are trustworthy (hence the residency). Now finding the staff to do it is an entirely different problem, but if the idea is thrown around and there are people who want to do it, then I'm sure it wouldn't be a large problem. I mean, UpMax's videos have shown how much work people who love building will put into buildings, if we can find a few residents who love growing the server even a fraction of that amount we will be perfectly fine. At this moment I'm not sure if any residents would want to, but once it is a possibility I would think it a viable option.
And I'm not arguing with you (and I don't think you think I am), just throwing out ideas and bumping the thread .
I suppose it would not have to be exclusively to residents because that is a difficult goal to achieve, but many non-residents are known to be trustworthy and helping in this plan could be another way to expedite their residential promotion, giving even further motivation to do well.
In my opinion, the biggest issue with public buildings near spawn is not finding someone to build them but finding someone to maintain them, i.e. they will be prime griefer target and will need to be frequently repaired.
I think if we do plan to build specific things near spawn we can make the block unbreakable, right? I do think that the glass griever trap we have works well to prevent grievers though. If we are unable to make the objects near spawn unbreakable then maintenance is another way to earn brownie points. People truly underestimate the power of simple busywork to keep people engaged.
Maintaining the spawn area, spent too much time on it. nearly 40% of the time spent on server is keeping the spawn area clean. filling up tunnels, holes, caves, beaches, ice, water. Not very fun as all.
That said, building any building at spawn area, makes newcomer think its okay to build there as well. even though signs/rules says no building/mining near spawn tower. by near i mean within viewing distance of spawn tower with far rendering.
the lack of buildings around spawn area might portrait the server as "empty", but the truth is, if players walk for a little more in any direction, they will find cities/towns all around it.

Lets try that. Krisst could have a budget of say.... 50 bp and that should last until the 17th. He could, while he is on, have someone trustworthy take care of spawn. If that person does a good job, at all times, then he would be award some brownie points. It might work, and it is a good test before the 17th. It might even decrease the amount of work the mods have to do. It is worth mentioning that everyone who has brownie points will become residents. Residents with points will have more power too. (Krisst will keep track of the points until we enter them into the system)
Also, if I were to commission a building, that is fairly grief proof, with a grand central train station, that has a map of the railways (and the map made in paint or something could also be commissioned), who would be willing to make it? Of course of the test that krisst will be handling fails, this probably will not happen.
Still, how many people are willing to give it a shot?

If it means implementing a plan that will bring life to the spawn? I will gladly help out, all I need is instructions and I'd do the best I could to improve the image of the server, because I really want to play on the best server possible server.
If you do give Krisst the ability to give brownie points for structure building/maintenance then I would also like to be a part of that. Krisst, if you see this post your response to if you want to recruit me in this thread, I check the thread frequently during the day so I will most likely see it here first.

I voted for the Nether, because it looks pretty XD
Also because I want some lightstone, as every1 does...
Oh noes, I wanted brownie points first. Oh well we finished the nether a long time ago lol.
