Hey, I'm new here. I hope I'll be able to send the impression that I'm not some idiot, because I'm about to ask a VERY dumb question.
I just found out about Minecraft. Yes, I see that I'm a little late to the party. I watched youtube videos of people building cool things and thought that this would be a pretty fun community to join. But honestly, I haven't been involved in an online community for ages. Imagine that I'm you're friend who knows nothing about the internet and try to help me out in layman's terms.
So uh... online, how does that work?
So I bought the game, and can play single player. It's pretty chill. I've also played the classic in-browser game, which is also chill. But when I try to play in-browser multiplayer, it always says the server is down. I tried using the out-of-browser game for multiplayer, but it says I need the IP. I assumed the names of the servers are the IPs, tried a couple, none worked. So how do I get online? I feel like the great game that everyone else is playing is different from mine!
I'm using a Mac OS X, it might be a bit low on memory (it has windows on it, which I figure might take up some space). The browser game only works the first time I play it on the browser (so I need to keep closing and reopening firefox/safari if I want to restart). Otherwise it's just a black screen. My single player game also lags quite a bit.

You know what, i need help with this crap to.
Your not exactly alone, im sure that theres hundreds of people with the same problem.
When i try to connect using the external url, it will only work on the administrator account AND i cant be logged in.
Which i find reltively frustraiting.
if i try to connect on my user, it comes up with that stupid red screen that says **** about timing out.
i tryed connection to my ip adress via the stand alone game exe.
nope.
i tryed making myself admin in the server text and all that crap.
i just dont get it?
i can garuntee its something simple i just didnt see.
Wow I feel dumb, I just figured out that IP meant the numbers, which you need to find out on your own using sites like this. That's really embarrassing, I knew what IP meant I just thought that... nevermind.
Anyway, the in-browser multiplayer still doesn't work and out-of-browser I get a timed out screen. So I'm still having problems, and I think they're similar to the guy above me.

IPs are not always numbers, URLs may be used too, and a list can be found here: http://minecraft.abyssal-legion.com/serverstatus/ some may have whitelists (lists of people who are allowed on, and kick everyone else) but theyre worth a shot
Unfortunately, I'm still getting an error that says:
java.net.SecketException: Invalid argument
Any suggestions on how to fix this?
not much... socket exceptions (from what i can tell) are basically the servers way of saying it is overloaded and kicking people. while i have been kicked from my own server with this error, friends sitting next to me have remained logged in, albeit experiencing lag and respawning blocks...
to solve it? i dont think theres much you can do, try to reconnect later (30 seconds or so) or try another server...

I'm using the minecraft site to go online http://www.minecraft.net/servers.jsp , just clicking on one of the servers. What's the the other way?
And it gives me (I'm looking at it right now): Failed to connect. You failed to connect to the server. It's probably down!
Apparently every server is down.
