This is a roleplay and pen-and-paper economy server. At new frontier, you will be keeping track of how many resources you mine and accumulate, including gold, bronze/iron, coal, wood, fabric, hide, and more. The golden rule is this: Roleplay that for every 1 resource you "mine", you are able to build 5 of a derivative material.
In roleplay, the point is to take part in an in-game fantasy world. Learn how the world works and take part in it to carve out a place for yourself and help make it fun for all.
Economy:
There is a make-believe economy that you will take part in. For every resource you mine/harvest, or otherwise acquire (such as a chunk of wood from a tree), you may build 5 of a similar resource that you derive (such as wood planks). It's not too hard to get enough to build with, and the system has simplicity in mind.
Mining: mining means breaking of a block here (removal from the game). Mining is the normal way of gaining resources. Count how many you mine, because you may build 5 structural blocks of a material that can be derived from working with that resource. 10 mined blocks = 1 bar.
Bar: When trading or making a storage room for your materials, a "bar" is a single block you use to represent 10 mined resources. A bar of coal would mean that you mined 10 blocks of coal ore, and represents the power to build 50 blocks of a derivative material, such as cobblestone.
Gold: Gold is the standard currency in game. 1 gold bar = 10 mined gold ore = 50 "gold". You may be wondering about people lying about how much gold they have, but its the same thing as worrying about people using ULTRA DESTRUCTO ATTACK to kill any monster instantly. Roleplaying systems will work well between people who play together and consent to using them. The fun is in roleplaying your limits and finding ways to overcome them together.
Coal: Coal ore (black) can be processed (sometimes with regular stone) to build cobblestone, and provides a heating element in many construction, crafting, and sometimes even magical endeavors. People often represent a bar of coal with a block of gravel or dark gray cloth.
Iron: Iron ore is useful to mine for building metal structures, or items/processes that require metal. People often represent a bar of iron with a block of cobblestone. Some players process iron with, or instead of, stone/coal to make strong cobblestone.
Dirt and normal Stone: These are so common its not a problem to use them as you see fit here and there, but if you build something significant with them you should still be sure to mine an appropriate amount or build a small quarry.
Sponges: If you are using these to keep water out, there is no need to account for them. Sponge isn't used as a building material, but players may want to have it represent something else.
Tree Trunks and Leaves: Tree trunks can be harvested for wood, but don't leave the leaves hanging in the air! Leaves might me useful for making cloth if you have a crafting workshop, and a special rule is that you can count 10 leaves as 1 trunk piece (from all the branches). Trees can be cultivated if a player wishes to plant some and roleplay harvesting them at a paced rate.
Cloth and Hide. Some people make cloth and or other fiber-using things by gathering leaves or crafting wood together with water. Hide can be skinned from defeated enemies. Remember, for every block mined you have at most 5 of a derivative material to work with.
Other plants: Players tend to roleplay their own method of how the get and grow mushrooms or food crops. A popular method is to place new dirt in the ground around a plant and wait for it all to turn to grass to time when the plant has finished growing.
Food: Food is an unofficial system you may choose to take part in. Whenever your character feels the need to eat, you must consume 5 food. If you want, maybe roleplay that you need food after joining the server, after an amount of time playing, or after gaining a new skill or item.
1 plant when milled = 5 flour.
10 flour baked = 1 bread = 5 food. [edit]
1 mushroom = 5 food.
Glass: Glass is a material you get from heating up fine sediments. Possible things you may mine for to make it include sand, gravel, or dirt from the bottom of a lake. Roleplay a method or location you can use to heat it all up! Max 5 glass buildable per sediment mined.
Public and Natural structures. Public use structures like shared mines and dungeons for adventures, or natural things like hills and trees may be built at no cost. However, others are free to change or add on to it as they see fits the game world better. Some players like to indicate that a structure is private and has been payed for by placing blue blocks in the doors.
Setting:
NewFrontier has a somewhat medieval / transitory-colonial feel. You may see carpenters, farmers, and archers, but also spellcasters, possibly pirates, and the occasional musket rifle (technology more advanced than muskets is out-of-scope for our server). However, it is important that you find fun in roleplaying a paced and low-profile character who must search and train hard to acquire the skills and items. Take care to help the game world look good and add support beams to mines for example.
Combat:
Combat will not be strictly defined unless you consent to another player's personal system. Roleplay it as it should fit into the game world, and find a way to be fair and reasonable when engaged with enemies or other players. Our rule is that a player being hit with an attack or effect has the final say in what happens or whether they avoided it. It is recommended to let other players know how you make your decisions, and to have something to help randomize whether you get hit (such as a coin flip or die). Never engage NPC enemies alone, always seek other players to enjoy the experience and help out. [New] One player will usually play the role of how monsters get hit and retaliate.
Magic and Items
Roleplay the process of gaining the skills, facilities, and materials necessary to craft an item such as leather armor or a bow and arrow. Did you craft your first couple swords? They probably will be rough, hard on the hands without a soft grip, and you may wobble off balance trying to swing them at first. Magic is difficult to acquire. It is not known exactly how one may begin to find power within themselves, but only that the journey is long, unclear, and rife with trial-and-error. Writing down a material cost and specific system to use helps and can inspire others with their own systems. [New]: To coincide with the XP and Level system, there are different ranks of things like combat items. Visit the wiki for details.
Powergaming and monsters:
Again, this game isn't a race to power and riches. What will be fun is roleplaying along and enjoying the fact that monsters can be underestimated and will thrash you around. Did your leg get bitten by a shark? Have someone craft bandages for you. Having to rely on eachother and failing sometimes will make your victories much sweeter and will contribute to the game world. NPC Monsters will have red eyes if they are aggressive, and green if non-aggressive. All players are welcome to create monsters as well as lead adventures.
XP and Player Levels [New]
There is a semi-unofficial system that is coming into use by player request. Visit the wiki for details.
Griefing:
Griefing or otherwise disrupting the flow of the game on purpose or by negligence will be result in a ban. Appeals should be posted in this thread. If greifing occurs, players are often willing to hire others to fix it. If you lost something you built, guestimate the resources you lost and recover them.
Special note to ops: Please greet new players and either explain our system to them or direct them to look for this thread first. Lock the spawn if nobody can be sure to do this, and make sure it is sealed off completely when no ops are online. Help moderate a paced and interactive game by example.
Remember that even if an op generates treasure, it still has to be mined for. At the very least, payed back in the future by one or some of us, so KEEP TRACK. This holds true both for op and player created missions. We'll have inflation otherwise, lol, and material would seem a lot flimsier. Consider placing a mob near discovered gold ore or other resources, that's a quick way. You cant gain resources by mining unattended bars unless the player who mined them is there to validate what is going on. This is important :smile.gif:
Ops are mostly players too and follow all the same rules. Players can make dungeons but shouldn't put unmined gold in them. Ops just have a greater responsibility to help people and keep the game flowing.
Books are reprented as a color code of three blocks.
When read(which takes time) books give you the bonus, which is lower on re-reads.
Books take a good amount of time to write and copy.

Color Code: Lime green, lime green, lime green.
Bonus: Increased damage and anatomy against invertebrates.

(This is a draft)
Day 1:
The first settlers arrived and made good use of Stone Town. People quickly built up houses around the town. The first mines opened, and the economy started up. The future of NewFrontier looks good.
Day 2:
While expanding, we encountered our first attacker. A giant snake came, causing the whole town to either flee or attack. Since nobody knew how to attack a giant snake, we stabbed, shot , and slashed it until it died. When it was over, people collected the bones for new weapons.
Day 3:
More creatures attacked, this time smaller than that snake. We got the situation under control quickly, and started an index of creatures.
Day 4:
Someone opened a commercial forge, and started making glass orbs. The glass orbs were made into grenades. After complaints about balance, there was proof uncovered that the Mongols actually had grenades like this.
Day 5:
Beached Whale! This was perfect! We spent the whole day gutting the whale. The food and bone should last us weeks.
Day 6:
Another giant monster came. Except it was a lot stronger than that snake. Even with the cheating grenades, this one took a while to kill. I don't think that we managed to index it.
Day 7:
We managed to capture a worm, and our scientists analyzed it. We created a book about battling worms from this, and then decided to build a library. Checkpoint 1 Was built today.
Day 8:
The library was built, with the first two books being On worms, slugs and other invertebrates and NewFrontier Archives: Part 1.
Day 9:
Scouts reported about a flooded temple by the Ancients. They say there are huge leeches near the entrance. We do not have the resources yet to check inside the temple, but there might be treasure inside.
Day 10:
A magical crater appeared between Stone Town and Checkpoint 1. Engineers are going to fill the gap in a few weeks.

By the way, I DIED. I built too close to a walker and it started munching me up. In the care of Darke, I was buried alive. Falling in an out of consciousness, and after two days of slowly clawing through a short amount of stone with my bare hands without food or water, I died beneath Stonetown. Had I not prayed to the Immortal Crab for longevity, my suffering might have been briefer T_T. At least I got a funeral the next morning. I let RealG claim my vacant home, and Meteo's brother, Meteo, moved in with him.

Day 12:
Some new monsters appeared. They seem friendly, but when newer colonists approach, they get eaten. I also cannot explain the numbers on their heads yet. As of right now, we are ignoring them.
Day 13:
It's slug mating season now. Our scientists managed to get a few in captivity. Now we need to update On worms, slugs and other invertebrates. By the way, have you ever tasted baby slug? It's amazing.
Day 14:
Slugs invaded Stone Town! We managed to kill all of them. Except the babies. Those babies are delicious. I can't even remember how many babies we skinned alive today.
Day 15:
Someone decided that we needed to kill the Saw Sheller at the far end of New Frontier. A raiding party was established, including one of my bodyguards. It was a shame the bodyguard got killed, although we gained a lot of experience from the Saw Sheller. In the middle of the battle, fog came. I think everyone was affected by the magical fog today. I don't really know how, but there was fog that came, and then left. I can't really explain what changed, but something major happened.
Day 16:
We just used public funds to build a slug restaurant! It's now open in Checkpoint 1. On a completely unrelated note, the local slug population is dying out.
Day 17:
There has been no virus that attacked. Nothing of interest happened today.
Day 18:
We decided to send a raiding party into Worm Dungeon. The party found ways around the various traps inside. At the cost of one person's life, we found gold! Hurray!
Day 19: I slept all day.
Day 20: Some dumb hippies decided to steal baby slugs. I was busy in C1 then, but when I came back, one of the guys trapped himself! We had a long talk until he decided to break my door to get out. He managed to run with a worm too. Now time to hunt these guys down.
