OldFrontier is the remains of a roleplay server during its trial week while it was publicly listed, rules were being conceived, and ops were still being found. A wild west of sorts. What remains is a world dived into a newer Overworld and an ancient Underworld of forgotten ruins.
At this point in time, OldFrontier is now a sandbox with a maze you must solve.
I have a bit of a suggestion:
Op declared global tasks/quests to earn resources, like:
NEW TASK: Repair the left wall of the castle
Reward:
10 blocks of gold ore, 10 inital stones for expected construction cost.
That said, I'll start assuming 5 buildable blocks per mined, and ignoring cloth, glass and plants.
EDIT:
Server is down.

I disagree with you, therefore you are wrong.
Quality of output = Skill * Effort
1 mined resource (ore, wood, stone, etc) yields 10 blocks you can build with
Conflicts with everything else. Don't you mean 5?
Also, what is the sand to glass conversion rate, and how do plants and cloth fit in?
Yes you are right, fixed. Thanks!
I joined an RP server the other day and expected it to be a crapfest, but it was pretty fun. I thought it was going to be a bunch of serious nerds getting into character, but the conversation was mostly normal, focused on building stuff. I found the bartering for food crops and iron fun and wanted to expand on it. The RP aspect was more like learning fire spells to use against enemies or simulating an outbreak of a virus.
Cloth I use leaves as my natural resource and have a crafting table, and for glass my method would be to take 1 sand/gravel resource and put it in a forge with one charcoal resource for heat, but I'd skip actually going to a forge if I was using much of it.

Yeah that's a pretty cool idea actually. Definitely will do. Server should be up now, I see it in the multiplayer list and have been in.
Mixing Minecraft and Pen and Paper economy? I am intrigued to actually visit another server than my regular private one for once. This sounds pretty fun.

And like the baseless fabric of this vision, the cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces, the solemn temples, the giant Screen itself, all of which we inherit shall dissolve. And, like an insubstantial pageant faded, leave not a byte behind.
Just try it out without worrying too too much. There is a lot of people coming and going right now but eventually people will get used to the system. Help people understand whats going on, the game will evolve according to how you and others interact. The server may go private (but still open) if this interest in it sticks around for a little bit. There will be a server reset on Monday. By then the economy guidelines will have circulated, we'll have ops, and new players can be screened briefly if griefing occurs. (Right now the server is hectic but it shouldn't be after Monday).
Also, please post the name you use in Minecraft. Mine is the same, Meteo2
I just knew this kind of thing would be inevitable. Oh well, it sounds like fun, I'll try it out. The greifers can pretend to be locusts.
EDIT: I regret ever setting foot in that server. It's not that I hate the idea, it's that it relies too much on trust to be taken seriously to begin with. You can't expect people to follow your rules without some type of force, and in this case, there's none whatsoever. I scoffed at the 10 leaves = 1 tree trunk rule and built a tree, and NO ONE COULD STOP ME!
*install evil laughter*
I think you're not really aware that this is the internet, and that trust is a flimsy little chewed on piece of gum on the bottom of a shoe. Very rarely will you find such a piece of gum intact and in the wrapper neatly thrown away. Then again, it's still being built and and op's are still being located, but still keep in mind about this whole trust thing.
As of this post, the server's screwed, there were more griefers than there were players, sorry, there was nothing we could do. Griefers were: morsay, richey and organface.

First off, people can build natural things like trees and other terrain, as well as common-use structures freely. As far as griefers go, during this trial week it was expected for them to come and mess with all the temporary **** so we can ban a few of them. Starting Monday its all getting wiped anyway, and we may have the server private (but open) with a spawn prison to check people.
The economy mechanic is just a role-play one. Saying people wont abide by it is like saying a person is going to use SUPER DELUX ULTRA ATTACK to kill any giant monster instantly. It will work between people that consent to it and play together.
Thanks for the lesson on what internet people are like, you internet expert you. :wink.gif:
So far everything has gone as expected. This is an experiment, and the challenge will be to see if this slight twist on open roleplay can become somewhat persistent and fun.
Very interesting idea, throw in a 1024x1024x64 map, server-side enforced rules and some character building/combat system and we could have the coolest small scale MMORPG (ok, forget that first M :tongue.gif:) ever.
Sorry for the slightly off-topic post but I couldn't resist.

Hey, that's what JTE wanted to do. :sad.gif: Except the large map would be split up into smaller maps. And continually regenerate (growing trees).

Go play Wurm. It's exactly the same.
Except they made everything take 40 seconds, because you know, it makes it *cough* grindy *cough* 'interesting'.
Exactly. I remember taking *more* time to cook some kind of food on it then it would IRL. Unfortunately Wurm seemed great in theory but was nearly unplayable in practice. I just posted about it on http://minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?pid=8205#p8205
And now for something (not really) completely different:
Not sure if anyone here has played it but making a Ultima Online "clone" with a Minecraft like terrain/housing system would totally rock! It should be possible to adapt RunUO (a great UO open source emulator) to connect with Minecraft - but without client-side support it wouldn't be very useful - any chance of convincing Notch to help?
I've run a medium sized UO server and would love to help with server side programming/gameplay design for something like that.

Anyway, I think I'll just destroy the dirt block and replace it to keep track of crop growth.

sorry guys!
