I really think we might need an entire sub-foum for the Torch/Lantern debate.
EDIT:
I think lanterns should have a few "Tiers"; Only wood and cobble, since no one would waste diamond/gold on silly little lanterns.
That way, you hardcores can only use wood lanterns for the challenge; But newbies and carebears can use cobble ones for less challenge.
Peri;
Thanks, just hope this thread doesn't go off topic.
Here are my thoughts
If we are getting time-limited torches then:
1. Base it on difficulty (only enable on hard mode)
or..
2. Make it a global on/off option to enable the time limit of torches.
Alternately;
Leave torches unlimited, but make placing torch require a flint lighter (Steel or a new one based on Stone), each time you place a torch your lighter durability goes down. Steel > Stone. (Placed torches would auto-use your lighter, if you have no lighter, you can't place a torch.)
The only issue is flint needs to be a bit more readily available to make your first lighter, but that shouldn't be an issue..
Pros: Easy to manufacture and makes a lot, Fast to place, expendable
Cons: Have a lifespan (maybe a minecraft day or two)
Lanterns
Pros: Likely to burn brighter and have more radius of light than torches, Infinite light source
Cons: Likely to use iron and glass.
I think the template for lanterns would look something like this

One glass, one Coal, and one iron to make four lanterns would not be too taxing but still yield a bit more difficulty to manufacture than easily expendable torches. Hence increasing the game's playability. Making them out of stone yields just as much difficulty as making torches so it must be iron. And it just makes sense.
EDIT I wanted to get my idea and thoughts out there first of all. But yeah you should def. Merge all lantern related threads into one because its just getting to be rediculous.
It's amazing how something simple as small lighting object can cause such an uproar before it's even out.
To be honest, I think there should be one topic. This is the Halloween speculation forum, and don't necessarily need to make a forum for every little panic attack that is remade a few times.
Perhaps we just need a few more mods to keep things in track?

yeah in the lantern thread that just got locked, I missed what you said about the light radius of lanterns. It's bound to happen when I scan over twenty-some posts = P
I also like your
configuration because in my mind, a lantern has three equally important parts: base, fuel, and transparent cover. I don't see that input yielding more than 2 or 3 lanterns, though.

In my opinion, this design is the most reasonable, especially if you get 4 lanterns for every one glass/iron.

could work. A torch doesn't need glass. I personally hope oil will be added as a liquid type, and a bucket of oil could fill 16 (maybe 32) lanterns.
It would make the start of the game a little slower (something I'm in favor of), and would create another 'this or that' dilemma when choosing how you use your iron (also in favor of). I welcome changes that slow the game and make it more difficult. A fully functioning castle or village shouldn't be an easy feat to accomplish.
For everyone worried about losing their torches, it's been stated that torches will be exchanged for lanterns! Problem solved. "But what about this and that other thing and..." PROBLEM SOLVED

Problem solved... until we start new files - without lanterns! Not disagreeing, just pointing out that problem is not solved, so let us carry on...

I LOVE the idea of adding oil in game. It could be as fast as water but you swim MUCH slower in it. And the only way to collect it is by crafting an oil rig above the ground. that would be so cool.
EDIT: Furnaces could run better on oil. Minecarts could maybe travel a lot faster... New and better light sources could use oil as an ingredient. I think we just found the next tier in fuel blocks.

If you can swim in it, why can't you just get a bucketfull of it?

Love the Idea of Glass, coal (or Oil soaked wool block) and Iron to make a lantern, I also would love it if Gold had a use so maybe because of its luster, using Gold to make lanterns would make them brighter/have a wider light radius.
Mmm I would say.... oh ya TurtleeyMC, I would use gold in lanterns. Mainly since that would be the only usefull thing for the many blocks of gold I got just sitting around.
So basicly, if gold is used in lanters I would totally make a ton of them.
Disclaimer: I am not saying that Gold should be the only thing Lanters use. I am saying that if there is Tiers for lanterns like there are for other tools (wood, gold, iron, diamond), that gold should be in that Tier list (something, something, Gold, something).
As long as it doesn't use iron, I'm cool. Iron is useful for buckets, minecart tracks, armor, swords, tools... pretty much everything.
I'm also hoping that it's still pretty easy to make lanterns en masse. Maybe I need to go to hell first, or maybe I need to smelt a ton of glass, but I'm hoping that making stacks of 64 lanterns isn't ludicrous.
How I'd probably do it.

= 2-4 lanterns.
or possibly just
=1-2 lanterns
The big thing for me is I'm kind of worried how the dynamic is gonna change for exploring caves that take more than a day or two to finish mining out. Will I be able to craft enough lanterns that nothing will spawn while I'm mining? Keep in mind I'll need more and more as I go deeper. Am I gonna have to use torches and relight them every few days? I dunno. My current world either way will still be just fine since I've already torched up the place and they'll all turn into lanterns. IIRC, Notch also mentioned that lanterns will give off more light than torches. Now given what I know about light, namely that the sun is light 15 and torches are 14, a buff to make lanterns 15 really won't change much. Maybe it'll be more or maybe the light will degrade slower than 1 for 1 tile (that'd be kind of cool). All speculation here though.
I like all of these ideas so far. My main concern is that lanterns will be too easy to make.
Lanterns should be Really rare so you can only permanently light up your main buildings and maybe a small tunnel.
If you can make 10 lanterns the first day, why even bother having torches?
I say you use about 3 iron bars for each lantern. Or worse so you are forced to use lava and torches to light up your mining tunnels.
If that happens, mining will be harder and make every single ore more valuable. Mining down in the earth should always be dangerous and life-threatening. Today you can get a pickaxe the first day or two. That's as unrealistic as it gets. Outdoors mining should be easy while under-surface mining dangerous, but more rewarding :wink.gif:
The oil idea is great. The oil you find should not be endless like water and lava though. Think about a endless oil block meeting lava! haha
All torch- and lantern- related items go here now.
All other torch and lantern topics posted after this will be merged.
