a few things i wanted to share and discuss, some fun facts, tips, and things you may not know
when i arrived in the nether, i really didnt know what to think, my brain almost exploded at the awesome my eyes were too slow to behold and process, i dug out a hole in a wall, and hollowed out a room, that room is now my home.
First off, living in the Nether is alot like living in a cave, but with certain advantages and disadvantages one HUGE advantage is the portals, unlike caves, if you run out of wood or any other surface resource, you can make a portal and portal out, you might think im insane for having a portal near, let alone IN my base, but my base isnt a 5x5x5 space, i have low cielings that ghasts cannot spawn in.
a few cool things i noticed about the Nether and its creatures are that
's and 's are VERY VERY common, so fire up the stove because soup's on!
like 's, ghasts drop gunpowder, another cool thing i noticed is that, i was firing away with a bow, and i hit a fireball, it bounced right back and hit the ghast, i died and lost my bow, so i tried with a diamond sword, i was expecting an epic fail for the history book of failure, and swang, and it worked! i deflected the ball of flame back and with the help of a pigman, i came, saw and KICKED ITS ASS!
(zombie pig men) are passive mobs that travel in tribes and carry lightstone swords (possible future update? maybe a torchlike weapon?) if one member of the tribe is hurt, fry your ass and call yourself toast because your ****ed.
another cool fact about is that when killed, they drop feathers, or grilled poerk, which comes in handy when ghasts are on the rise, literally
you may know about the new block types, NetherStone, LightStone, and Mud, which reminds me of the "level cleared" screen from doom to because of all the faces in them. as you know, NetherStone burns forever, Lightstone burns like a torch, when broken it drops 1 block of lightstone dust, combine 9 to make a lightstone block, next to jack-o-lanterns, make great underwater light sources, and mud is self explanitory, it slows you down, great for delaying mobs, buying you some time to fight back, for example, you could make some bridges to cross the mud that turns arond like a zigzag, and they would just go straight trhu, not follow the pattern, so you can get in your base in time, no more ambushes.
also, its worth noting that blocks brought from earth cannot be destroyed by Nether denizens, so if you want to make, and hold a successful base there, then line your front door with cobble, obby, gold, diamond, anything non-flamable, cobble works well
moving on to surface updates,
not much to say about Biomes, except the awesome snowing effect is gone
Fishing is in, right click while facing water to cast your line, once it goes down, press it again to have A FISH FLY AT YOUR FACE fish can be cooked, fishing rods can also be used to grab mobs, say a pig is screwing around on a cliff near your base, well just yank that ***** off, that'll teach him a lesson. i havent tested this yet, (i probably will have by the time you've read this) but i think you can also use it on ghasts, to say, reel one into a lavafall and watch that unholy beast burn. (if minecraft had achievements, THAT would be one of them, "Gone Fishin': kill a ghast with a fishing pole") also new are the addition of pumpkins, they appear as pre-carved jack-o-lanterns, and will appear anywhere as long as its on grass. pumpkins can also be worn as helmets, that actually modify your HUD so you can only see the eyeholes, and mouth, everything is black, but if you craft a torch underneath one on the crafting board, you get a lit jack-o-lantern that actualy lights up more than a normal torch, so it makes a great fun decoration, and dosent go out underwater, so more underwater light for us
that's just about all i know, if you know more things, feel free to share them,
1) Apparently, water evaporates immediately in the Nether. I tried transporting water in a bucket to a pool in the Nether, and it evaporated on contact. I make a new pool lined with surface cobblestone, and the same thing happened.
I thought maybe the Nether-stone was acting like a sponge, so I brought some back up to the surface, but I could easily pour water right beside it. So it's the Nether that hates water, not the stone the Nether's made of.
2) Ghast fireballs can deactivate portals. (I found this out the hard way, without a flint and steel in my inventory.) They can also /re/activate deactivated portals.

1. i noticed that too, i just forgot to add it,
Notch already said there would be no negative effects of bringing netherblocks back from the nether, stil a valid observation
2. i also noticed this, that ghast must've been a freaking sniper, because i have ONE door for my base, and earth blocks lining it, and the fireball went straight past me, i killed it and noticed a chunk my base was gone, and the parts that werent gone were on fire, i also noticed that my portal was empty, i thought it would make a great cinematic moment, the base open, so i lock up the portal so nothing can cross thru, i reactivated it after everything was under control though :tongue.gif:
