But I don't really care myself. I bought the game, I can just "forget" about it, and play when the HP is fixed in SMP.
I don't play in a large SMP server, just me+my good friend and maybe he'll invite other good friends. So we don't worry about this "griefing" a lot of people seem to be worried about.
Problem? After playing SMP, I just can't play singleplayer anymore...I LOVED being able to play with my friend and share the same experience and projects we did, either by ourselves or together.
But the big negative...I LOVE LOVE exploring, and Minecraft is great for that...find awesome caverns, dungeons...so many cool things to explore. I love building too, but I also like that "thrill" of survival and that suspense. Going into a cavern loses all sense of exploration when I go "oh yeah, I can't get damaged or killed"...since at least "for me" (note quotes, meaning me personally)...that suspense and thrill of exploring is totally lost.
My friend feels the same way.
Either way, I voted it very important...but if its not in, I'll just come back in a few months when its fixed. I bought it for 15 dollars (really cheap) and can play whenever.
Doesn't really sound all that important, I think the HP system is already pretty stable.
Mega fail, the thread refers to the multiplayer Health which currently does not work.
/facepalm
I didn't know, sorry.
Anyway, I think that the multiplayer health system should indeed be fixed. Not necessarily the biggest concern in the Halloween Update, though. Maybe in some future update centered more around multiplayer gameplay.
I'm thinking the only reason Notch didn't specifically mention tooling up serverside health was precisely because of all the disappointment and rage that would occur if he couldn't get it working properly. Like biomes; they weren't in earlier not because they didn't technically function, but because they were sketchy and not something he wanted to put out as part of his game. Now that he's got it working more like he wants, we'll see them. The things I've seen about movable light sources are the same thing; it's not that it doesn't work, it's that it works poorly and/or looks hideous.
Many posts before me have mentioned the numerous problems with health accidentally killing you in SMP, because of other funky issues, like the glitchy block destruction, lag, and such. When he's got that nailed down to a point where it doesn't CAUSE more problems than it fixes, we will be able to finally kill each other. So that's a No vote from me with a side order of Hopefully Eventually.
Also, the whole "No-one plays single player games anymore" angle coming out of this thread. That's amusing. I think anyone can roll into a multiplayer game of just about any flavour and see why SP games are still popular. This is not to say ALL, but there are some just absolute ******* players and even entire player populations out there who are bad even when they're winning. In SP games you don't have to worry if the community is good or filled with asshats unless you have a multiple personality disorder.

Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that I'm the only person who plays Minecraft normally.
Every time I come to these forums, I think more and more that there is no such thing as playing Minecraft normally.
The health update is going to change the entire face of multiplayer, likely forever. It may sound cliche, but it's true. No longer will you be able to carelessly walk off the side of the mountain. More so, no more being safe from other players. Some people talk about people cooperating, whereas I say "Hell no.". Why? Because it may happen temporarily.
People will kill eachother. People will raid eachother. People will tear down houses. People will backstab eachother. No longer can you take a mindless stroll, veterans may leave traps all of the map, or be waiting in the trees to put an arrow in your face. No longer will people live together. The odds that they will kill one another at some point because of a conflict is very high.
People will want to live alone, and end the living of others. It's going to be very dramatic to watch nearly all the servers go to hell, literally. I cannot wait. I shall kill everyone >:3
i find it funny that some people are complaining that Notch won't live up to what he said, and won't have the update done in time, and others are telling him he should do more.
Why don't we all just let Notch finish his already difficult task at hand. Although this (i hope) will be adressed in the update after the Halloween one. (or in this one if he has time)

Some people can't even connect to SMP, myself being one of those people.
I couldn't care less about health in SMP, at least until the bugs are fixed (java socket exception and so on).
Single Player is where it's at for me - and HP would cause a load of complications, and undoubtedly more complaints.
Certainly not. He's not even finished making the game. I mean, completing SMP is not his main goal until Beta.
>.<
I remember him saying that fixing the SMP was what would trigger moving into beta.

"Minecraft is still in alpha, but is rapidly nearing beta. I've only got one more feature to add; multiplayer support."
On the front page, a good indication that once SMP is functioning better than it is now, the game moves to beta.
Notch has also stated that SMP is current priority in the update, and if features for SMP are not added in this update they will be added shortly after.
Tired of running in circles setting fire to monsters to kill them.
