Do you realise how much we are realying on electricity today? We need it to cook our food, we need it for transportation, we need it for almost everything, play Minecraft, so we are ****ed.
Really, though, an event like this is unlikely, at best. Possible? I don't know. It's scary to know how truly defenseless we are in this universe, though.

Even if this does happen, our Magnetic Field will help. and you could turn off the power grids a while before so even if it hit, you could turn the power grids back on after the storm.
Except we're not.
There's plenty of EMP protection in many electronics, people just don't know it because they don't care until they hear about overhyped **** from Fox News like this.
Didn't necessarily mean stuff from the sun. :smile.gif:
What about gamma radiation from a supernova? Oversized asteroids in our very own solar system?

The closest star besides the sun is millions of light years of way and the supernova will deteriorate before it gets here, making it easier for our ozone layer to shield us from it.
That video is probably the most ridiculous and exaggerated thing I've ever heard. That NASA article says absolutely nothing about "photon clouds" and "destroying all life as we know it." This is the worst case scenario:
Quote from NASA »
An avalanche of blackouts carried across continents by long-distance power lines could last for weeks to months as engineers struggle to repair damaged transformers. Planes and ships couldn’t trust GPS units for navigation. Banking and financial networks might go offline, disrupting commerce in a way unique to the Information Age. According to a 2008 report from the National Academy of Sciences, a century-class solar storm could have the economic impact of 20 hurricane Katrinas.
It might cause a lot of economic problems, sure, but...seriously, it won't end all life on Earth. That's exactly why no one should ever listen to Fox.

But it's still coming this way. Just because a bright giant star burns out doesn't mean the light will suddenly stop, it'll still be coming this way for however many years until the star shrunk and sent much less light than before.

BIGGEST ****ING FACEPALM EVER! The closest star besides Sol is 4 Light years away. (Proxima Centauri)
I'm sure we'll be fine. Instead of getting our panties in a bunch, let's focus on the more important matter at hand... Lucky Charms, or Cinnamon Toast Crunch?
Information from Nasa can be manipulated, and news lie all the time.
fear is the most effective weapon "governments" use against civilians they can't kill because are needed for production (or at least they can't kill without creating a covering lie/truth and a scapegoat like 9-11)
whenever there are social unrest or their control system is ongoing a deep crisis they will try to divert attention elsewhere, thats when the "alien" menace borns, understand alien as "outsiders", as they can be extraterrestrials, terrorists, or solar storms... mainly, they want you to keep looking at the starts when you should be looking at the street.
news do that all the time, you have been trained to believe that what the news says is true, without critically processing the information you are shoved in to determine it's veracity or intentions.

It what Travis is doing. He thinks hes smarter than NASA.

Radiation protection? How does that even work on that scale?
Nukes wouldn't help. Something too large would turn into many smaller asteroids, causing more problems, if it could even crack a large asteroid.
I had not seen this link. I am at ease now. We are not going to die. At least in 2012.

Bro,that link is from 09.
