I agree, but you have to wonder when guys rarely ask you out, "what's wrong with me?"
Guys are getting more and more shy these days, especially around pretty girls. You might have to take the initiative more often because, and I know this is cliche, they're afraid to approach you because they fear rejection and feel like you're out of their league. If you see a guy you want to potentially go out with, strike up a conversation, introduce yourself and then you're more likely for them to ask you out because you got that part out of the way.

I don't think people are getting more and more shy, just insecure. Basically because everwhere you go you see ads of men who are in great shape, same goes for the girls. And feeling lesser would make you not want to ask them out, leading to fear of rejection (like you said).

People who start relationships based on looks alone are doomed to be miserable anyway. Take it from a married man: you want a partner you can talk to, share interests with, and who doesn't annoy the crap out of you. No matter how good they look it isn't worth it if you can't enjoy their company.

Agreed. Looks are important, you obviously have to be attracted to the person physically, but if their personality is hideous or just clashes with yours then a relationship is destined to fail with that person. A great personality is the most attractive attribute a woman (or man depending on what you're in to) can have. However, that said, their looks are likely going to be what attracts you in the first place so they are of some importance.
EDIT: Take me for example, I'm freakin' gorgeous, but I'm a terrible person. =P
