I was wondering about what the community thinks about this. I've been to my fair share of cons, and none of them have ever broken the $50 line, so to me 150 is outrageous. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it'll be great, but will it really be hundreds of dollars of fun?
The fact that they sell out in 20 seconds means we're lucky they're not asking 250. If you were them, would you like to make an extra $750,000 just because you can?
Totally with you on this one. My fiance and I were under the impression that tickets were going to be $100 which in itself is pretty expensive. It seems ridiculous for a two day convention for ... well, a single game and its youtube stars. Whelp, guess we'll be sticking to our free local indie cons!

I can understand the high demand raises the price, but they are selling out! That means someone is making over a million dollars. If a company makes a million in under a week, they better put out one heck of a con!
Mojang have stated before that Minecon is a financial loss for them, if they were to reduce the tickets from $150 to $50 that would mean they would make an extra $750,000 loss... that's not an insignificant amount of money!
Just a little perspective on other attractions nearby in Orlando:
Price of a 1 day ticket to the Magic Kingdom(Disney World) = $95
Price of a 1 day(weekday) ticket to SeaWorld =$50
Price of a 1 day(any day of week) to SeaWorld = $82
Price of a 1 day ticket Universal Studios = $128
To me I don't blame them for going with the $150 price because they're just competing with the other prices in the area. Most of the money probably goes to the venue too let alone other costs.

Wait, a financial loss? I've never held a con, but something tells me it'd cost less than a million dollars to pull off!

I do see how the venue could be a problem, because they keep holding it in cities with major attractions, but if they want to compete with other prices, go lower! The cheaper it is, and the more tickets there are, the more people can (and will) go!
If we thought they were expensive now, check how much they're going for on eBay! >.< People are willing to spend $1000 on two tickets... just... wow...

I live near the Orange County Convention Center, and I'm going to Minecon. The tickets literally sold out in SECONDS. They're only bringing in about a $1.125 million in ticket sales, since there's only 7500 tickets. That really isn't that much money to organize something so huge, for so few people, especially at such a venue. I've never been to a Minecon before, but I don't think it's a normal convention.
After reading that they take a loss by doing Minecon, I'm even more grateful for the reasonable price. Especially since there are other gatherings in Orlando like the Festivals of Speed and DuPont Registry Live that cost as much or more per ticket. I think they make money on those too.

Kid, you have a poor understanding of the the value of money. When your parents go to buy grocerys they probaly spend around $200. A convention would cost a billion at the very least.
as someone who does events for a living, $150 is CHEAP for a 2 day event and an event of this nature costs quite a bit of money... I am sure they are losing money doing this. doing this at a convention center, you have space rental + taxes + union labor fees and that's just getting INTO the space. that does count sound, video, entertainment, rentals, et al...
I could easily see this at $200 a piece in the future.
it would be nicer however if they could increase it to over 7500 people if it sells out in seconds. I would think something spread over several venues and days with 50k tickets at $100 a piece is a doable event.
I believe the prices are fair. Granted this will be my first con I am going. And something I have not seen anyone mention as far as cost is the adult only party they have thrown at the other Minecons which I assume will be coming again
I say its fine. I work a job so it' was very affordable. My advice to all that can't go this year for next year 1. Save money now if you have no job ask to mow lawns, babysit, ext. 2. plan ahead in case you do score tickets. 3. don't be disappointed if you can't go Minecraft will always be there. (unless the end of the world comes which I doubt)
and yes I'm going I bought my flight, hotel, and ticket is printed and in my safe.

don't go to crazy now. no where near a billion lol.Cons are expensive. and we are talking about minecon here, minecraft it a crapton more popular then allot of other things which have held conventions and charged MORE. Minecon does actually run at a loss which allot of people have said. yes its expensive, but compared to other conventions and how much it COULD have been if they wanted to make money off it? we are quite lucky.
