Minecraft is seriously lacking in mobs and variety of mobs.
Everywhere in the overworld has the same mobs.
The End has a million of a mob in the overworld.
I'd like to see noticable differences in biomes when it comes to mobs.
Ideally, I'd like to see a lot more mobs.
There should be a couple biome specific enemies and a couple biome specific friendlies for each biome.
Sounds like a lot, but if there's going to be more variety, that's definitely a good way to start having it.

Not to mention that all hostile mobs have relatively similar power, with mobs not native to the Overworld being slightly more powerful than ones native to the Overworld. More difficulty in extra-dimensional mobs (and underground mobs besides cave spiders if they are added) would also be a good idea, especially Endermen.
A mob update would be a very good idea for 1.9 or 1.10. It won't be in 1.8 (Dinnerbone DID just say there were no plans for hostile mobs) but since something is going to affect mobs in some way it's possible that there will be a new combat system which would be great to balance future mobs around, is related to enchanting somewhat (both relate to combat), and would be a great lead-in to a mob update. If not, it's probably a rebalance of existing mobs. Or something else. Idunno.
Whatever it is, though, 1.8 is not a mob update. Dinnerbone pretty much confirmed it.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
I would say they it is quite pathetic you have these guys shelling out almost nothing content wise each update. Meanwhile there are people making mods in heir spare time doing more. Not to mention all the mods that feature new mobs and animals, and mojang seems to have a hard time making them. Sounds like they need a new team, a new guy or to stop having fun at work and get s''' done
Honestly, I they shouldn't add new mobs in 1.8. Yes the game needs new mobs, but when you have a broken game that is bugged all to hell, and has rushed sound effects (I'm looking at you, hrm-ing villagers), it needs to be polished and bug-fixed like there's no tomorrow.

Do you have any idea how much they added over the past year?

Kind of a moot point, it's like asking me if I know how hard my local fire department is working and how many fires they have put out. It's their job to add content. If they don't their subscriptions based game would eventually dwindle and be passed by other similar styles games. I'm just saying that for what what the game is and how "hard" it is for these professionals to do this seems strange considering the job jests who fire out texture packs and mods of all sorts, not to mention keeping them updated. Content should be cleaner for these guys and there should be more of it.. If their game is as buggy as you claim I'd say they should probably focus on making a new engine.
That being said I doubt we wi have mobs this update. But I think the game is sevey packing from mobs of all kinds and difficulty.
I want ocean expansion, maybe more dungeons/generated buildings. Some mob improvements, too. Red dragons would be nice, but I don't think we'll be getting them anytime soon. And Mod API? It's the new Half-Life 3, if you know what I mean.
Everyone is quick to say 'add a ton of stuff' then don't realize that the concept behind whatever is added is more important than simply adding it. A lot of mobs would be redundant or would have no good reason to be in the game.

Soo just a out every game I can think of and I'm sure you've played has more mobs and variety in mobs than I can count. You are saying they are pointless and not needed? Sounds really boring to me. Why have variety when you can just play Ryu in street fighter..
I mean cave spider and spider are pretty redundant... Same with different tree types.... They all do the same thing.

Whats the point of gunpowder without guns? Maybe a flintlock musket or cannon. Or a new kind of sword (Bit of codeing there through) Zombies with different colored shirts and different skins. Zombie villagers having their robes and rarely dropping emeralds or something. And maybe ruins and fish. Maybe just for looks, the fish wouldn't do anything, just swim around and keep the old fishing mechanic. Villager females and guards. I don't want new dimensions. SIDE QUESTS! THERES NO QUESTS! Its a sandbox game but who cares? Im sick of killing that poor Ender Dragon over and over. New boss or something. Probably in 1.9 through. Tiers of weapons and/or mobs. Maybe better sword hitting. You don't come up to someone with a sword and go swig swig swig super fast. Update the skellys so they look like their shooting. Sorry for the rambling, tons of ideas.
This will not be a mob update if your pattern is correct. 1.7.3 added the rare "Chicken Jockey". So if you are sticking with that pattern it will be 1.9 that has mobs. Also you forgot all the updates inbetween like 1.6.2 and 1.6.4
I predict that 1.8 is going to be a mob update. Why? I have noticed some patterns, and it's VERY strange.
If you skip an update, the next one would be a mob update. It's sounds like an unlike pattern, but look at the pattern:
1.8 - ?
1.7 - no mobs
1.6 - horses and donkeys
1.5 - no mobs
1.4 - bats and witches
1.3 - none
1.2 - Ocelots and iron golems
1.1 - None
1.0 - Snow golems, mooshrooms, and villagers.
Additionally, a start of a boss mob pattern could've been spotted, too. Every four updates, there is a new boss mob. It's was first 1.0, then 1.4, and could be 1.8 be next?

Yeah I agree! There will probably be birds in the next mob update. I mean it's sensible, right? There may be a bird boss! LOL!
Btw birds would be awesome like many of you have said

I have one word for you: Bats.
This topic has pretty much served its purpose anyways, as 1.8 is confirmed to not be a mob update.
'Combat' Update
No weapons
I'm so glad I had faith in you. NEW MOB!
