As the title says, Dinnerbone might (keyword might) put seasons into Minecraft (finally). I've been hoping for this, since this will open up many new options.
The biggest change I'm excited for is actually not in the game - people are finally, finally going to stop post suggestions to add them in.
The next thing I'm hoping for is that there comes more weather effects with the seasons. And thus ends another bloody, redundant subject on the suggestions threads.
But before this turns into a rant about suggestions, what I really would like to see if seasons were to be added in is that villagers would react to the weather. Run inside if it's cold, or hot, or a hurricane is coming, or something. Adds more dynamics to the game.
What also needs to be added in is some sort of temperature system. Hopefully not annoying effects like taking damage when cold or having to stay inside when it's summer, but maybe little things like you mine slower in hotter or colder temperatures. Also perhaps some nice aesthetics effects, like seeing your breath.
The final thing is to have some sort of seasonal mob, and mob changes. Snow golems should melt in the summer (or the Minecraftian equivalent), for example.
These are the things I hope I'll see if seasons were to be added in. I want to see what you guys/gals opinions are.
I certainly hope that doesn't happen, I don't even understand how it would work with all the different biomes. Snow in the desert or jungle? No thanks.
I don't see it working out all too well with all the biomes that would not work out too well with it (jungles, taigas, deserts and ice plains wouldn't change much, oceans, beaches, and rivers wouldn't match the surrounding biome). This MAY indicate a change to the biome system, but only if actual seasonal changes are coming in 1.6.
What will most likely be implemented in today's possible snapshot is just the length of days and nights changing, and maybe the constellations in the sky too if Dinnerbone is up to it. I would be fine with this for now, at least until Dinnerbone or Jeb implements a better biome system (e.g. something similar to what we had before in beta); THEN I could see more room opening up for seasonal changes, especially changes to weather (I have an EXCELLENT system in mind that would be okay with this generator but superb in 1.7.3 or the generator that the terrain reform peoples want).
I think that if the seasons are kept rather simple, then it shouldn't be too hard to implement or cause any other issues. I'm thinking it's as simple as:
1) Variable day/night cycles
2) More weather options; variable weather patterns based on seasons (such as more thunderstorms in the summer)
3) Tweaks to breeding/farming (faster in summer, slowing in winter, etc)
That's not too bad in my opinion and I think I'd like it. Things that are harder to do are:
1) Fundamental weather changes such as snow melting in tiagas in the summer or snow in deserts during the winter
2) Environmental damage such as walking around in the desert in summer without protection
Obviously, none of this is impossible because there's a mod that does it, but I'm not sure how much it impacts game performance. Mojang has to worry a little about specing the game outside the range of current gamer base
- leaves changing color for autumn/winter (although I don't know how hard it will be to slowly change gradients, in game)
- slower crops in winter
- longer/shorter days
- snow in normal forests, maaaybe extreme hills and plains?
- change frequencies in rain (less in summer, more common autumn/spring, and winter in places that shouldn't have snow)
- seasonal mobs, maybe?
- surface snow can melt (opposed to right now only being possible with man made lights), taiga and tundra can actually have no snow in the summer.
Hopefully adding seasons and a temperature system to the default game will help our modders make their biomes and stuff work better together. Don't need an autumn forest when there are seasons, you can just have the leaves turn colours.
So I guess what I'm saying is, I care more that there's going to be a framework for modders to work around. Same with the 'staying in one biome longer = more difficult monsters' thing. That gives modders the opportunity to add features that use that code, yknow?
If they do add seasons to the game, I'm hoping that mob behaviour changes with the seasons. For example, slimes spawn more often in summer than in winter (random example) I think they are heading this way with the regional difficulty that was added in the new snapshot.

I agree, modders now have more to work with when designing their mods and plugins.
I personally think that other things are going to be changed in world generation such as neighboring biomes having effects on each other. Other than that I believe that they will have seasonal items, longer days or nights, seasonal mobs, aesthetics and the usual stuff.
I'm wondering how they'll fit the seasons into the different biomes, sounds like it might be difficult. However, I'm just excited for a color change in the forest biomes based on the season.

This, basically, and changes to plants. Likely, they would implement new crops, as well as seasons where those crops will and won't grow.

Watch me mine for crafts, craft mines, fall down shafts and do a bunch of other things that may or may not involve blocks.
Creepers turn brown? (with referance to notch's answer to the texture of creepers?)
Redstone will go further in summer?
And opposite in winter?
Water level will rise or lower due to the season or moon phrase? (between one block?)
Wooden blocks will burn in summer if it's in a desert?
water source block will freeze in winter?
One will burn in a desert in summer if not wearing boots?
Torches (I'm not sure about either it's redstone torch or normal one) will go out faster in summer but will be brighter at the same time?
Lakes or pools will dry out in a desert if it's summer?
CAKES WILL BE ROTTEN (will turn into greenish colour) AAAAAANND POISON YOOOOOUUUUUUU--in summer.
fuel inside a furnace will burn out faster if it's summer?
Add thirstiness meter (or something like that) in game?
Blazes have a very low chance to spawn in a desert in summer? OMG so much possibilities!

Don't expect me to make mod or creat maps,
I dunno how to do these things...
Ok biomes that will be affected:
Forest (leaves turn orange in the fall and winder and it snows)
Tigia (snow melts in the summer)
Desert (gets so hot you catch on fire in the summer XD)
Tundra (snow melts in the summer)
Mountain (Snow in the winter)
Plains (snow in winter)
Rivers/lakes/ponds (if found in the biomes above, will have the same effects)
Biomes not affected:
Jungle
Ocean (including islands)
Mushroom island
Beaches
When it is winter biomes (that are affected) will have that green/blue color. In the sumer, they will have their usual color. Maybe tigia could have a greener color in summer.
I hope that they make seasons an option upon creating a world. I would even like to see them add an option to change the how much the seasons effect the world over the Minecraft year. It could be set to 0%, where the seasons have no effect on the world and it could be set to 100% where the seasons have there full effect on the world or it could be set to anything between. If a player has cheats on or is a server op or if the player has access toserver.properties, then he or she should be allowed to change the season effects.
I assume that summers would be generally safer and the winters would be generally more dangerous. Summers would be generally safe because daytime is longer and nights are shorter. Also, Plants will grow faster. There would also be more farm animals (pigs, cows, sheep and chickens) spawning in the summer. Winters would be generally more dangerous because daytime is shorter and night time is longer. Plants also will grow slower and farm animals will not spawn as often. These effects would increase and decrease depending on how close the time was to the middle of the effect's respective season.
It may be safer when it is winter time then in the summer time. This is because of the fact that sometimes we may find mob drops and xp valuable. There is also the fact that less mobs spawn in caves in the night time, because the game has to sort the limited number of mobs that spawn to a cave or not to a cave, where during the day time all the mobs spawn into a cave, generally.
Spring and autumn would be in between summer and winter, with spring being after winter and autumn being after summer. The strength of the effects of the seasons spring and autumn would be based on how close the time is to the middle of the effect's respective season, just like how it is with effects of summer and winter, with some differences. The only differences are differences that would be considered to be aesthetic to the masses, like leaves changing colors and textures. Flowers could also bloom (spawn) in the spring.
Another aesthetic effect that could happen that is related to the changes of summer and winter is the change in the amount of snow fall and the change of the chance of water freezing into ice if the light level is below what ever the light level is that is required for water to freeze.
There is the question of how the seasons would effect each individual biome. In my opinion, it would generally be what TwentyFive said.
Lastly, there would be no seasons in the nether and end.

. Like others have said, Summer wouldn't work very well in a Taiga, nor winter in a Jungle. Unless these biomes are to be temperate climates.
It will be interesting to see what happens....
