It could be the new lighting engine. It has not yet been implemented, in any form. Lighting revamp =/= new engine.
Actually in the latest snapshot you can see that they've fixed some of the lighting issues with slabs and stairs; they no longer appear shadowed when in confined corners. The lighting fixes are being applied slowly, and I've not seen any indication that they weren't still coming in 1.5. You can only see the fixes on smooth-lighting.
In my opinion they should make a different melee combat attack that isn't endless clicking and jumping and button mashing. Like maybe there would be a combo for a certain attack. like for example a stabbing attack might be hold down click + push mouse forward. But besides that. A good new dimension would be the Herobrine dimension, in this dimension. You get to fight herobrine.
That's my opinion.
I dont think it will be "the ocean update" maybe terrin update with ocean stuff... well, thats what the comuntty want, not mojhng, I think small update like 1.3.2 or stuff
- New terrain generator
- Many new mobs, many of them biome-specific (including water mobs)
- Several new plants of varying rarity and use
- New biomes
- Multiple new dungeons and structures, with tougher mobs and better loot
Would be a great way to fix many of the existing problems and demands.

Me and my friend also talking about that, thanks for that post
Why do people think it will be an aesthetic update? We just had one of those. Anyone remember it? It was called the Pretty Scary update? 1.4? Item frames? Pots? Corner stairs? Ringing any bells?
I don't really think it will be terrain either. Jeb said that the most negative feedback he gets comes from when he changes the terrain, and that he would rather leave it alone. It's possible, but unlikely.
Its probably not going to be combat either. I think Mojang thinks that combat is fine how it is. How do you really change first-person melee combat anyway? You could make it more like Chivalry I suppose, but its seems more "Minecrafty" the way it is. And more weapons are not needed.
Ocean content? Unless Dinnerbone is planning to sit out the entire update, unlikely. Nor would I want that, seeing as Dinnerbone makes good content.

1) Though Jeb may not realize it, he's more likely to generate more hate if he leaves the terrain alone.
2) There's an easy way to not break worlds (which is probably why Jeb is nervous to change it). Just include the current terrain generator, and bury it in the code. Set all the current (non-Superflat) worlds to that generator. Bam, worlds don't break.
3) Inevitably, if Jeb makes a minor change to the generator, it's going to implode. If he's going to break the world, he might as well add a decent generator alongside it.

There's one thread I saw in the suggestions thread that was pretty good (odd, right?). Basically, you had to charge attacks with the sword. You got penalties if you charged it for too little or too long, and you got a bonus if you attacked at just the right time. There was also a better blocking mechanic, in which if you blocked at just the right time you would completely block all the damage. It would have worked out pretty well.
And more weapons are not needed.
If Jeb won't add a better combat system, adding more weapons that fight differently are the next best thing (or, heck, add both). No, they are not necessary, but only because there is a better alternative.

Why would Dinnerbone sit out on the update?

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
A Chinese style rocket launcher. The only counter is how many people might say: Shut up, kid. I want to rocket-jump, make portable fireworks, have a new ranged weapon, and blow up the omniverse.
Fireworks can be launched by rightclicking the ground while holding fireworks in your hand.
On topic:
I hope its a terrain update (Not likely because Jeb does not like changing terrain and Dinnerbone does not like programing water) or a Mob update (not likely without Jon).
Tweaks to the terrain generation are likely. Oceans are too large, extremehills needs a better system (tweaked randomization, OR new MountainRange biome). Better Jungles would be nice, or an alternative biome to Jungles such as Tropics (Beach+Jungle).
Potionbrewing additions (uses for rotten flesh and poisonous potatoes), growable lilypads, new mobs for new biome(s), new mob for the End.
Added Adventure mode to Minecraft: Many many different ideas for this.. I would think it'd be cool to have a high scores list on Minecraft.net for Adventure mode, making score actually matter when you die. Closer to hardcore survival, you die once and a new seed generates OR you spawn somewhere completely different in your current seed.
====Suggestion PLUG!!: Seeds generate more than 3 strongholds per world. A triangulation of strongholds leads to different "End" than other triangulated ones.====
Added more mob heads/craftable bosses in Survival mode: Creepers now drop heads, creates ????. Zombies now drop heads, creates Giant (not the gigantitanic one). And so on..
I personally would like to see the first initial rough cut of the API for plugins but barring that, the terrain would be a good choice. I don't mean changing the current generator, but rather making the generator more modular and customizable. That way they can avoid the thousands of duplicate "OMG CLIFFS IN MAH WORLD!" bug reports from people who don't get it and yet still give people whatever massively frothy landscapes they want.
Reworking the generator would also be a good step towards adding API support for controlling terrain generation. I'd love to just be able to drop in a plugin for adding a new biome and have it work.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.

Actually, Adventure mode, potion additions and mod API support should be what is coming in 1.6. I don't think it'll be that special, but maybe they'll have one great thing in it (could be the Adventure mode..). But that's all what I've seen and been told, so I just assume that's all they're going to add in 1.6. The mod API support is basically confirmed from what I remember, though.

I know that. The lighting engine rewrite is a bit different; You'll know it when we get it.

I'm not saying terrain generation changes are impossible for the next update. I'm just using known facts and forecasting from that. Jeb has said he doesn't want to change the terrain, it's probably not going to be changed. And if he does change it there will still be people unhappy with it.

I think simplicity is best where combat is concerned, and it has to fit with existing mechanics. For example this charging up thing might not work very well when trying to mine. Will the game try to charge up my pick, for example. If it only worked with swords, would it be better for me to use an axe against monsters because it is easier? These are things you have to consider when changing fundamental mechanics, and I don't think it is worth the effort.
If Jeb won't add a better combat system, adding more weapons that fight differently are the next best thing (or, heck, add both). No, they are not necessary, but only because there is a better alternative.
We already have weapon enchantments to add variety to weaponry, we don't need different weapons. Whenever I have played mods that added more weapons, they tried to be different by adding stuns or bonus damage etc. Things that would work as enchantments. Hence I reiterate: We don't need more weapons.
Why would Dinnerbone sit out on the update?
Because he pretty much said that he will never make any water content.
The trouble with this kind of thing is that half the community will be up in arms about how mobs are now too easy and all they need to do is X, Y and Z and they're no challenge at all. Then if mobs are rebalanced the other half will be up in arms about mobs being too hard and they don't want to fiddle about with some ridiculous combo moves like X, Y and Z when they just want to mine for stuff and build buildings.
Combat is fine as it is.
Considering that the whole system revolves around having better equipment and Internet connection than the other guy, no. Combat is not fine.
And those people would definitely be overreacting. All you would do is try to guess how much you have to charge your attack and try not to go overboard (otherwise you get a penalty). At the same time, you have to block or dodge the other guy's hits as well.
Right now, combat is just spamming the mouse button whilst your cursor is pointed at them. Not by any stretch of the imagination is that a good combat system.
Besides a terrain update and a combat update, I'd also like to see more generated structures, but preferably AFTER the terrain and combat updates.

Don't know, I didn't exactly watch it.
