I just tried it last night...and...all it does is make everything fullbright? What the heck? No cool inverted look or fancy effects? It looks so cheap and ugly.
Do we know if they have plans to spruce it up?
[This has NOTHING to do with anything "HD" or what not, this is about color effects]
I doubt they plan to 'spruce it up'. It looks fine. Honestly, were you expecting it to make everything HD or 'fancy' as you put it. No. It's supposed to make a slightly distorted light.
It's my favorite potion so far. More than just trying it out at nighttime, have you tried it going through cave systems? Or in the ocean and underwater? How about in the Nether?

What? HD? What? No I'm not talking about that. It's too much. It makes everything fullbright. It has NO downsides that I can see.
What it should of been was some kind of enhancement...but not a perfect one. Something like inverting colors, or adding some kind of hue to it. But just flat out full brightness without shadows? It looks like crap, like they spent a total of 3 minutes on it and said, "colors? Nah" I mean all props to Jeb and co for their work as always. But this just looks horrible.
I hope they balance/recolor it a bit in the next updates
It looks exactly how I imagined it would look. It lets you see in the dark. It serves it purpose perfectly, and I really don't imagine anything you brew with a vegetable could really make fancy effects.
What fancy effects were you expecting anyway?
Some kind of inverted colors, or perhaps some hue or shade overlay.
Its my favorite potion so far lol exploring fully lit caves is a great way to mine without wasting resources and time on torches.
That's my point, it's too good. If it was some kind of color type thing like above, it would be very helpful, but not 100% perfect. It doesn't need to be flawless.

Sounds like you're expecting some kind of Tom Clancy special ops night vision effect. While I wouldn't have any problem with that, we're talking about a magic potion. It doesn't have to conform to any reality and frankly it was probably much easier to implement the way it is now. I do agree that it would be an interesting downside if using during the day would induce blindness.
There is absolutely positively nothing wrong with it at all not even a little tiny bit. The draw back is that potions don't stack. It's not like you can take 64 of them with you. And they require a lot of gold.

Under no circumstances do I want villagers building ugly little houses in my world. That's my job. Link Removed
It would be much more useful if darkness was actually, well, dark. I remember back before 1.8 I couldn't see 2 blocks in front of my face. It made me terrified of night!/caves

Is your brightness on 'moody' in the settings? Darkness is the same for me on 'moody' which is same as the old days. Do you have your monitor gamma levels jacked up?

Even on the moody setting it's brighter than it was before. I think that 1.8 changed the lighting up to make it less scary.
Something along the lines of this, this would of been much more appropriate
What, so I can't make out any detail at all?
The idea is to SEE better, not make the image brighter. If fancy effects made it easier to see, there would be mods that did that instead of plain fullbright.

The Internet is a big place, friend. I've been places you've n͍̺e̩v̦e̦̰͍͓̩ͅr̜̭̝̬̬͉̤̬ ͙ịm̖͇a͍͇̤͙̥g̤̘i͔͖̤̼̪̬n͖͔̳̬̯e̩̘ḓ͈͔̠̙͇̼̯.͎
Hmm, it sorta has it's own lighting effects, but I don't want anything weird looking. I like using night vision potions in creative when I'm creating in the dark.
Why should the potion have a downside? No other potion does, with invisibility being the exception to rule.
The potion works perfectly and does exactly what it should do. The reason everybody is happy with it is because it actually helps you see better.

This has NOTHING to do with "HD" anything. Seriously come on now guys.
How on earth is everyone ok with this? It's just freaking full-bright.

I tried it with terrible results. I gave my wife my glasses for a second, a creeper showed up and now my wife is pregnant.
Stupid 3D..

WHAT?!
Danger zone.
How is it buggy underwater? :/

It's not buggy, it just looks funny.
