please do not nerf the XP Farms. This is the biggest fun factor in the game (to build and use it). Please do not destroy it.

The biggest fun factor in the game? Are you serious? I could see how you might find the process 'fun' or something. But the biggest fun factor? You are not going to convince anyone with pure bull$#!t you know.
Also, like Debugman18 said, the change has already been reverted. But Dinnerbone might do something else like this in the future and I think it's a good idea. There should be balance in the way players collect XP.
The only things that should be nerfed exp wise are Spider, Skeleton, Zombie, and Cave Spider. IMHO, if you've got the know-how to make a Blaze Farm, Silverfisher, Ender Ender, or an actual kiershar style or Etho style mob system; then you should be able to do those. I see exp farms as more of a later game type thing than something you should have working by day 2 if you find one. I miss the days of classic grinders and mob sorters. And you'd think what with the new Looting Swords, everyone would be going creeper crazy trying to make a hostile mob sorter specifically for getting gunpowder. However just regular old dungeon traps have made headway as the most used and most popular thing nowadays.
TBH I can't believe this change was reverted. It takes all of 10mins to set up an xp farm using a spawner. The effort vs reward of this is ridiculous. Building an xp farm using giant black spawning rooms, water manipulation etc takes quite a few hours, a fair bit of planing and effort to get up and running. You are rewarded for taking the time and effort to build the farm. This is how it should be imo.
Edit: I think that on easy/normal spawner based xp farms are fine. But the nerf should still be in effect on HARD. There is nothing hard about a spawner based XP farm. And infinte levels so easily obtained in HARDCORE (Which is HARD difficulty) mode is just bad. Time. Effort. Reward.

People feel threatened by players that take the time to create a contraption that gives them advantage. Instead of leveling up to the challenge, they want others to be leveled down.
And let me make this clear... contraptions that are completely legit, take time and resources to be built and that only uses game mechanics as implemented.
I agree that is not fun.

Anyway, I agree with bluevein's post. The greater problem is not with XP farms in general, but with spawner-based ones, which require only a small effort and risk, almost zero resources to be built... so the risk vs reward is unbalanced in this case.
In other cases, people are whining because some nerds are spending hundreds of hours on their server to gain easy xp. They don't want to do that too, and they don't want to change to another server (xpgrinder-prohibited), so they want people to be leveled down. PS: I'm not one of those nerds.
Suppose the XP nerf is added as a server option? That way server admins have a simple way to either prevent or allow XP grinding as they please.
As for SSP... just don't build a grinder. If you complain about grinders, and then go and build one yourself... you have issues. o_O
As someone who disliked the nerf in the snapshot I'd gladly support this. Making it easier for the servers that don't want grinders to keep them out is fine by me.

Did you even read my post? Not anywhere in my post did I say that building or using a mob grinder was not fun, nor did I say that they should be removed from the game.
My point was that the OP is trying to convince us that nerfing XP farms will completely ruin the most fun aspect of the game, which is, apparently, in his opinion, XP grinding. That's fine for him, but he's trying to convince us that it is everyone's favourite aspect of the game, when he says that it is the "biggest fun factor in the game".
If he said it is a fun factor, or even a big fun factor I would have no problem with that, but it is not the biggest fun factor by any strech of the imagination.
I understand that people enjoy Minecraft in different ways, and that the game isn't tailored to me, I was merely contesting a point.

How does other people using XP farms on a server makes your game less fun?
I'm asking this because everybody on my server uses/makes XP farms of all kinds and we enjoy doing it. So I may not feel the same way.
As an admin on two different communities, I've observed the following post-1.3 regarding xp:
--You hardly need to even visit a grinder of any kind now with xp from coal, redstone, etc. and from smelting ANYTHING. I have enchanted four different diamond tools in the 40 or so hours I've spent playing since updating. I have not visited any mob grinders, instead I've smelted stacks of charcoal, smoothstone, fish, chicken, and iron; and farmed chickens and cows (for villager trades).
Nerfing xp from spawner mobs would only serve to cripple one or two people on our current server, the shopkeepers, who fill a useful function right now. Want a particular enchanted item but don't have the time or inclination to get it yourself? You can buy it off someone who does these things.
As for spawner farms, they are less stress on a server than the giant towers and massive obnoxious things younger players build to encourage free-roaming monsters. They automatically stop working once the player leaves the immediate area. On the contrary, multilevel fall towers and the like continue lagging the entire chunkset, even if players are away. And they are, with few exceptions, ugly, dangerous and present a nuisance factor to the community.
I do like to urge players to work together on one or two particularly nice spawner-grinders, and share them responsibly rather than everyone having their own crappy farms in their own basements.

Strip mining can be very fun , just dont stand to close to the lava after you strip...
