If you look at my signature, you notice one of the suggestion I've had was capturing mobs like pokemon by using eggs on them, as a way of getting mob eggs in survival.
Dinnerbone recently tweeted about it, but apparently HE heard the idea from Etho.

This is how I know when a new @EthoLP video comes out: In the last 10 mins, 5 people have suggested "eggs to capture mobs like in pokemon"
Strange, in what video did Etho actually suggest this?
I suggested this in May, at least, because I thought it would be nice to somehow get them in survival
He said 5 people in Etho's video have suggested it (meaning people that have posted comments, not Etho himself). You're making it sound like you're the one that came up with the idea first and that Dinnerbone should give you credits for it...
A way to acquire mob eggs in survival would be great, but I don't think it needs to be as simple as using eggs on mobs. There should be an added costs or item, and it should only work on passive or peaceful mobs. This way people aren't tossing creepers into people's houses on servers. Also, it would make storing and moving cows and pigs and such much easier and convenient; I kinda like the idea of storing my farm animals inside of chests, or possibly trading them on servers.

I would say that it would be most logical if we combined eggs with ender pearls (and maybe some other stuff), then we could say that we "transport" the victim to the ender (like, where the ender chests content goes) and then somehow bring it back with a spawn egg. Just my thoughts, oh, and I like the idea of not having hostile mobs, because the only real reason to use them would be to bug other people.
If you can use ANY spawn egg, you can transport mobs extremely easily without going through any effort. At least right now you still have to ferry them through the nether.

Allocators are no longer the future, we have Hoppers now. I still like them, though.

However, if the mob egg is in itself inconvenient to obtain, it would balance out a bit. Having a rare chance of finding a egg you can use to capture a mob (and only use it once) in a Dungeon chest, for instance, isn't the most overpowered. At that point it is just quirky with a niche use.

Since it was mentioned, I thought it was a good time to bring it up. I just thought it was awesome Etho had the same idea.
and I believe it can be balanced. Maybe a rare chance of the egg turning the mob into a mob egg. It's not like the mob is persistent and it's still going to attack you when it's set free. At most you have the chance to trap 1 mob somewhere for something.
If you PsychoIncarnate was the first to have that idea, then Kudos to you! I think is a great idea... and I'm glad Etho thought of that as well, as I'm pretty sure that it would take a lot longer for it to be noticed by Dinnerbone/Jeb if not said by Etho himself and spammed by his massive fanbase.
Anyway, I'm not worried about balance, as it can be pretty easy to balance that feature (Etho gives some ideas in his video on how to balance it).
What worries me is the chaos on servers, with people capturing creepers and throwing them at peoples houses to blow them up, or capture hundreds of skeletons and filling an enemy house with them... stuff like that. Surely some servers would come up with ways of preventing that, some already have explosions disabled, and plugins for egg-spawns could be created/used.
But I think that even in vanilla the eggs should have some sort of protection against mass-hatching or something. I don't know, maybe they would only hatch on specific conditions, or have some sort of timer for hatching... maybe something like that.
One Idea I can think now is that you must put the egg on a furnace and cook it (maybe it can only be cooked with a bucket of lava?) and after it finishes cooking the mob spawns in front of the furnace.
Getting mob eggs in survival? I kinda agree with Nerevar that you shouldn't be able to get hostile mob eggs.
But at the same time, it shouldn't be so easy to get mob eggs e.g. it should be done manually.
But what I really don't want is, if Dinnerbone does do the idea, to use chicken eggs to "store" mobs. Like you throw a chicken egg on a pig and it "becomes" a pig spawn egg.
An idea to possibly limit the deadliness of hostile mob eggs would be that the mob eggs in survival will always spawn the "child" of the mob. Like a mini creeper which does zero environmental damage or something and you will have to wait for it to "grow up" before it become deadly. People might be bothered to wait, but at least it won't be that deadly.

That's genius!! And we already have some child mobs like zombies in the code, just not in vanilla

You say that like it's a bad thing and that it isn't "that weird game" already.
And thats a bad thing... why? The way I see it Minecraft already seems like "That Weird Blocky Game" as is.
Personally I'd love the idea of catching mobs like Pokemon. I remember when I downloaded one of the PokeBall mods and had a fun time with them.
"Creeper I choose you! ... Wait why are you coming after me?!"
"Go! Enderman!"
*looks at enderman and hears new sound*
"Holy s--t!"
*Epicness1324 was slain by enderman*
I am ninja'd far too often.
Etho himself suggested it in his latest video.

Like in pokemon?
If this happens, you got one less minecraft player here
just sayin'
