I think it was a bad move for Mojang to remove the outlines on those items. If you look at the default textures for items, you'll see that the black outline is on pretty much everything.Having a few items without it looks very odd, and removing it on all items would make them look really bad, especially the weapons and tools.I don't want to start a big fight on here, but I'm just throwing in my two cents on the matter.

Actually, if they do it right, shading would look awesome on the tools and stuff.

I understand where your coming from, but re-texturing all the items like that would ruin the blocky theme Minecraft has used since the beginning that most long time players have hopefully grown to love.
This is just childish. I'm guessing you're a 12 year old or younger just by seeing that picture.
If you want people to take your "petition" seriously, go take notes from that "The terrain is boring" thread. They did it right, and now they have over 2000 petitions.

Ehh...
IMO, the style they're leaning towards recently is still blocky. It's just higher quality than previous textures, with actual shading rather than just random noise. Of course this is just my opinion.

You do realise this guy is just dicking around, right?
OT: If the textures bother you so much, get the texture pack from 1.3.2 and replace the new textures with the old ones. There's even a tool which you can do this within 2 minutes.

Ask people to imagine all tools and itens without black outline... because now that food has changed, everything must be changed to be consistent. Say goodbye to your beloved blocky theme!
Oh... and even now, a couple months from the gravel texture change, a lot of people still think that they look like crap. But complaining about it has grown old, that's why they are silent about it.
In this case, time doesn't heal the open wound... you just get used to the pain.

The new textures aren't bad, and they are an improvement of the previous textures, and they are changes like the terrain generator.
But the terrain generator has changed more than the textures. We've been with these textures since the foods were first introduced to the game and we've loved the way they were. The food textures are a little too late to be changed now, and it seems a bit uncomfortable to us to see such new textures which have become iconic to us.
Everyone sign a petition asking Mojang to change the item sprites back. It's obvious that a lot of the community seems to want them back, as evidenced by a poll on another thread similar to this (80 want the old, 20 the new). So go ahead and show them your poll, spam their twitters, and make them see that you want the old. Tell them that you will not stop spamming them until they tell you yes or no.
If they say, "yeah, we'll change it back" then rejoice.
If they say, "no, we're keeping the new ones" then shut the hell up and use a texture pack.
It's getting annoying to see these threads where people are complaining over a texture change. There is nothing easier in this game to fix than a texture change. Paint can fix it, Paint.Net is free and can fix it better. Talk to one of your friends, or a texture pack artist, and get them to make a "Classic Vanilla" texture pack for you. It's really, really easy.
As for the argument, that they are "iconic," icons change. The logos for most companies go under change every now and then. Your precious t-shirts are not going to look "stupid" because they don't match the current icon, because get this: No one cares. Seriously, no one gives a crap if it's got black lines or not on your t-shirt. Trust me.
My opinion on the issue: I think the old black lines look a little better, I'll have to see for myself in-game, but if I don't like them, I'll just modify my textures in a few seconds, and be done with it. I'm not going to be lazy and whine to Mojang.
Minecraft, Where every single bloody pixel causes a war within it's community.
But really, I love the idea of mutiple texture packs being installed by default, that would actually make the game a lot better, shut up the complainers, and allow us to have decent looking "normal" texture packs.
If it bugs you that much, you can simply edit the default tp to match what you want. I've seen people do it before.

As always, your wisdom shows no bounds.

The outline is made with squares!
Remember kids, when the mod crashes delete system32!
The items themselves are made up of squares too
Well, there's the crater in his logic.

reminds me of my life.
