i wish i shared your optimism and though the new sprites do look more complex id settle with the more simplistic style. and the weekly snapshots are a good way to keep the updates a bit more seamless and bug free but yet it does kind of put pressure on you as to where the direction of the game play is going.mojang is the only game company i know of that does this aside from Atari around the time they were releasing new titles for the 2600.
Who is in charge of texture? Just be glad It is not me or else your game would require a much more powerful vid card and look like an eccentric's bathroom tile work. My point? YOU CANT PLEASE EVERYONE. Never, impossible. THEY make the game, THEY like the new texture, THEY made the decision. deal with it.
I still think the new gravel should be "cement" or something and gravel should have a more gravel looking texture
As its been discussed over and over when they release that new texture, its very hard to make gravel look "good" in 16x16. That said, I agree they missed an oportunity to add a new block. But then, people would have complain they shouldnt waste time on "useless block no one is ever going to use"... urgh, peoples....
Imagine if, in the upcoming 3D remake of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Luke Skywalker's lightsaber was no longer blue or green, but purple or yellow.
That would **** a lot of fans off, right?
Same deal here. When companies start changing aspects of artistic expression that have already been established, you simultaneously **** off a group of people while at the same time might impress others.
So why change it at all? If you **** off an equal amount of people as you impress, then why not leave it alone and let the people who were originally pissed off have time to get used to the original design?
To do something like that is basically trolling - it just ends up pissing everyone off because no one has had the time to get used to anything. It isn't as simple a fix as just getting a texture pack, because the texture itself isn't the problem. The problem is the constant change to things that don't need to be changed and how it constantly stirs the waters of pissed-off and non-pissed-off people.
(And I know these statements might seem hypocritical to this thread, but there is a difference. Terrain generation is intrusive. You can't play the game without generating terrain. You can, however, play the game just fine without new food textures. It's a difference between artistic design and compelling game-play. Really, it's the core difference between mods and texture packs.)
Edit: The reason the original texture pack is important is because of brand identity. People have identified (made shirts, logos, animations, films, etc...) using Minecraft as a medium. Most of them also use the original texture pack because everyone whose played the game has used it.
So it is like a big middle-finger to everyone who worked so hard to make Minecraft popular by using its playful and iconic aspects as integral parts of their design.
What are people going to do with their pork-chop shirts now? Throw them away and make a new one? Keep them and remember back to when the pork-chops were "that old texture"?
For a game that relies greatly on the fan-base for advertisement, changing things that can be easily advertised and meme-d is like shooting yourself in the foot.
There is already a thread for this, but what ev's. i think that people are getting way too stressed about a simple fix. if they changed something huge, like removing deserts, then i would understand it. but when theres so much hate over a problem that is NOT that big, it just confuses me ;\
I'm still not a fan of the new gravel, and the removal of outlines on food isn't a change I would've made if it was my choice. But there's nothing that can be done to change it, so likewise with the new gravel texture, myself and everyone else will just have to adjust. It's not a game breaking change, so adjusting is something we all will have to take to doing, whether we like it or not.
The Minecraft Forums, where even the slightest changes to textures must be ranted about like it will infect your computer with a virus that deletes System32. Seriously, you'll get use to it after a while, no big deal. No need to make a rant thread about it.
*WHY* did they change these? I dont actually particularly care that they're different, myself.... blasted meat still works the same way, and such.... but I'd be interested in hearing why they thought it was worth spending time changing this (particularly considering this community's usual response to changes, which can be summed up as "HULK SMAAAAAAAAASH")
Just curious, that's all. I dont follow Twitter whatsoever, so if a reason was mentioned, I've not heard it.
I like the default textures. they are great but can leave you wanting a little more so it gives the community a lot to do by making a plethora of community made texture packs. if the default was amazing I don't think everyone would be as inspired to create their own.
keep up the awesome Mojang!

im not THAT butt-hurt over it. i can always use a texture pack. Not everyone liked the original textures, its more of a personal complaint,

this basically just sums up the whole rant in such few words. however mojang has made texture changes that im happy with. coa coa actually looks more like beans now and not like a wad of crap. and this wasnt much of a texture edit but i love how notch gave the pigs snouts. im pretty sure there were some people who weren't happy about that change and i understand how they feel.

This guy made some very good points:
The rocky parts in the gravel resemble flint.
NATURAL LOOKING ENOUGH?

that's what i call devotion
That has to be one of the biggest, most unneeded rants I have ever seen for so minor and insignificant an issue.
I have to agree 100%. You can't just compare Star Wars to Minecraft.
I am ninja'd far too often.
