Yeah I'm not totally a new player since I have played the game since 2011, so I can craft and sword and that.
Also doesn't help when you fill half a 1tb hard drive, slows things down A LOT.
So you should have named the thread 'Is the game boring and frustrating if you're on a laggy server with a crappy computer?' lol
It is, and has been for a while for me. It's not like it used to be before hunger, where you can just jump right in to building; there's a lot of setup you have to do and will continue to do for quite some time. Still, it overall adds a better experience in the long run because there are things you have to do, and finding unique ways to solve those problems is a reward in itself.
I think there needs to be a way to make the beginning of the game more fun, but mid-late game is just fine.
I don't have too much trouble with starving as long as it isn't a multiplayer server. Starving is a big deal on multiplayer servers because you can't just roam the wild and find tons of pigs, cows, and chickens. Just carry a flint and steel with you and you'll never go hungry. With multiplayer servers I really struggled unless there was some public farm or incredibly cheap food from some shop.
I for one think they need to change bread to just one wheat, to make it a good early food source again, or roasted seeds for like 1 shank each.
Which can be expected for a game that is purely about creativity. I admit I am a skilled player at the game, able to build, able to wire redstone, able to fight, but at the end of the day you have a bunch of people who rely solely on server commands to get anything done in the game or MCEdit to create their massive structures. Why people need artificial help is beyond me. If a player needs help in Minecraft, there should be help available help within the game. Also, there's just a lot of people who don't want to be clueless and frustrated, maybe even bored. Now, you see those guys at Mindcrack, and they're seemingly never bored, because they don't have a lack of creativity.I definitely think Minecraft should have some sort of optional tutorial system. Yes, cheaty cheaty. However, there are too many people who can't play the game, constantly get trolled, or worse, banned because they didn't understand something. I reckon that if Mojang wants more players, they have to introduce them into the game. That's not PaulSoaresJr's job, not the Yogscast's job, that is Mojang who should be providing the best content and hardest work for their own creation.
Firstly, non-standard font (or bold) on a forum really annoys me.
In other news, it is simply untrue to say that minecraft is "purely about anything" as many people play it for different reasons. I am not going to go into this much, but it is true.
And honestly, the game isn't super hard to figure out most of the basics, of course people need to have access to the wiki, but basically everyone does, and those that don't are going to have a hard time of it. Additionally, I don't really think Mojang is to concerned with getting new people to buy the game, and frankly, the opinions of people in the community (such as you and me) likely do not take into account what really needs to be done because we simply do not understand what we are talking about. That said, seeing as how word of mouth is basically there only advertisement, I would say that most people have easy access to someone who knows better.

I think it'd be cool to see roasted pumpkin seeds for 1 shank, but regular seeds, not so much. And one shank for a roasted seed is a pretty good amount of restoration. Unless it has bloody horrible saturation, I'd put it at half a shank. Heck, I'd put it at half a shank anyways. Should be worse than raw potatoes.
Anyways, there's already a pretty good source of starting food; apples. You likely need logs anyways, just run around chopping oak trees down. Unless you have an ultra-urbanized server with skyscrapers as far as the eye can see, you can likely find a tree or two to get a few apples from. And you'd need wood anyways, so it's a win win. Jungles especially, with all the little "bushes". Apple city. And I'm still waiting on that apple pie, Mojang. Even though nobody promised it. Or mentioned it. At all. But we have pumpkin pie! So uh. Yeah. Solid reasoning. I think. Sort of. And this is just my opinion but servers without a starter kit these days are stupid because of how many resources around spawn can often get drained completely, and sometimes for very far in all directions.
Here's what I do when starting fresh on SMP or SSP.
1. Collect wood and dirt
2. Create wooden pick and sword.
3. Run in a single direction until i find desirable land(space, agriculture, etc.).
From there on out once you've set up a small dirt hut you'll be good to go, you usually hit night right away but you'll be all set to adventure by sun up.

If you don't like 1.7.2, downgrade to 1.6.2. When I first started minecraft, I was always in Creative, Flat world, and peaceful, building a structure of some sort. When I started SURVIVAL, I was frustrated, I didn't know how to craft stuff, even a pickaxe! Then I went on servers and I got better, now. I know how to craft stuff. As for the mobs/items, keep cheats on so you can fly to the spot or replace your items in creative. Or do /gamemode keepinventorytrue. I would start with a walls server/ factions server first.
First day cut a tree down and grab some wheat seeds from tall grass then make a wood hoe or make a wood pick and get stone for a stone pick + stone hoe. Your first day you don't need that much wood. Don't build yourself a house first day, just live somewhere like the side of a hill. Sure zombies can break wooden doors, but they can't break wooden fence gates.
Try to right away plant the seeds before dark and get some extra wood. Kill animals if there are some (not horses or wolves). Then hole up for the night. If you got no food just afk so you lose less hunger while the wheat grows. If you found any coal craft a few torches with it and place it around the wheat. If you have food then just dig you area out looking for iron. You make charcoal for torches by cooking logs in the furnace.
Next day get more wheat seeds/wheat if fully grown, grab any bones skeletons dropped to turn into bone meal. Plant saplings if you have them.
And there a base
If you killed enough sheep you can just make a bed and the entire difficulty of the first day evaporates and the need for a base is completely gone. Its 3 wool on 3 planks. if dark even gets close pull it out and sleep on it. Then a major part of the game no longer matters *This only works on single player or servers where you are alone or everyone agrees and does go to bed.

As someone who plays on an occasionally laggy server with a crappy computer, can confirm accuracy.

WHAT?!
Danger zone.
1. Collect wood and dirt
2. Create wooden pick and sword.
3. Run in a single direction until i find desirable land(space, agriculture, etc.).
