Just happened upon this passive mod today for the first time, but have never seen mention of him anywhere nor in the wiki. As far as I can tell he's a passive mob dropping no loot, appeared twice when breaking a block of cobblestone inside of a house. Is it something with 1.7? Just there for fluff or does he serve some sort of purpose? Rather curious now.
Bah, I'd seen the spawn egg in Creative mode and always just assumed it was an actual fish! >.<!
Nope, silver-fish are based off a real critter(of the same name) which dwells in moist places, feeds on pretty much anything (paper, dead skin, whatever) And can go a very long time without food(about a year I think). They are pretty difficult to get rid off, but are thankfully both harmless in real life, and MUCH smaller than the minecraft variety.
Heres a picture of the real thing, they don't get bigger than a half inch long though normally.
As someone who has dealt with them, they are kind of gross, but the minecraft variety are much more annoying than the real thing.
Also ward, just a tip for future reference, search around the wiki a bit before making a post about something you think is new, helps answer the question at hand, and is a wealth of info.
No way, it's a silverfish! Generated in strongholds as monster eggs - these little critters will try to bother you when you break one of the blocks in the stronghold.
They're not so harmless IRL. They eat glue, and sometimes paper, in books.
Well I mean harmless as in they won't harm people, like scorpions or some spiders. They could be around your bare feet and besides the ick factor they couldn't do anything to you.
The Minecraft ones are kind of cool looking. I'd consider feeding one a book -- it might be fun to have it hanging around the house, kind of like a cat.
The real life ones, I'm more likely to hit with a book.
I'd rather have cockroaches than silverfish. They're easier to find, they walk into roach traps, and they don't eat my books! (I'm a bookaholic, and I have thousands of books -- silverfish could be very a bad thing)
By the way, silverfish (the Minecraft variety) are not unique to strongholds; they can also be found when mining in extreme hills (I hit a whole pocket of them when I was digging out my underground farm) and possibly also in regular hills. It's easy to tell when you've hit a silverfish block: it's slower to mine than the ordinary ones. So when it takes a few hits too long to break, have a finger over your sword hotkey and whack the silverfish (singular or plural) that are about to show up to provide you with free exp.
If they add rats and mice into the game, how will our cats react? I can just imagine them zooming madly all over the place, wedging themselves behind chests, knocking the flowerpot off my bedside bookcase, messing up my carpets, and being generally chaotic. After all, they just sit around all the time, so they might get way overexcited when they saw a mouse!

So you weren't aware that they existed in real life?

Maybe if they can have an effect on book and quills, too, when dropped.

[quote=DaBiggman;/comments/8994482]I think Jens will add Religion to the NPC's, so we can watch them kill each other.

I was not disappointed.
Those are silverfish; as others have said, they've been in the game since Beta 1.8pre. So, a while.
