People don't want to get rid of anything, they just want the rose back.
I don't understand why, the rose is still practically in the game, the only difference between the poppy and the rose is the texture and name. That's it. They still have roughly the same physical appearance, they still have the same function. Saying the poppy and the rose are different is like saying the old lapis block and the new lapis block are different. They're not, it's still the same block, it's just been changed slightly for the first time since it was added.

I wouldn't say any of them are the same, I would say the old lapis block looked better and the new flower looks better. Idk, the new lapis block looks too carved, it doesn't feel the same checkering it with snow anymore(disregarding texture packs), and I feel the poppy is a little more vibrant than the old rose.
Just ignore him. He's just one of those Nostalgics.
It's totally fine to be nostalgic, just don't expect to hold everyone else back from trying new things. I get the feeling that some people don't really want to play the actual game, Minecraft, which is a game still being developed by Mojang. They want to play their idealized version of "Minecraft" that they imagined/wished the game could be, back when they were still playing an unfinished beta version. That's okay, but everyone else imposed their own personal wishes upon the game and they are never all going to match up... these arguments that 'it's not Minecraft anymore because Notch/Jeb didn't implement that thing I wished for 3 years ago' are really pointless and tiresome. And they start up over something so simple as a tiny texture change of a flower.
"It's not Minecraft anymore" because in recent updates we've gone from actually focused updates to Jeb just pushing whatever content he wants into the game just because it fits. Something like bats (???) doesn't fit with the "theme" of Minecraft, whereas something like pistons doesn't have that same connotation.
1.7 is the first kinda focused update in nearly 2 years.
Back in Beta people didn't really complain about updates until Beta 1.8, then now more or less every update there are complaints on this forum. Not a great precedent to set.
I'm not really liking where Mojang is taking the game with removing content and adding in "better" content coupled with unfocused updates, but I'm not going to NOT update my game because of a single trivial feature that can easily be changed.
Yes the rose was replaced with the poppy, but players still have the rose bush. Just because it's a little bigger, a little bushier is no reason to rule it out. If players aren't willing to make the small change in the resource pack then don't complain about it. Better still - don't replace the poppy, replace the new rose bush with the old "Rose", otherwise it's still as complaining about gravel texture and cobblestone changes (In the past.)

It was silly the way it'd grow on it's own. Roses don't grow on their own they grow on bushes.
This was a good change and I'd rather single roses didn't get re-added.
Having said that, I wouldn't mind so much if roses bushes could produce single roses through crafting which could then be placed in flower pots(I'd prefer they didn't allow placing directly on the ground but if you really must I suppose I'd just grumble a bit and get over it.)
Just so long as they didn't spawn naturally as single roses.
It seems to me, after reading this thread, that people are extremely overreacting over a trivial change in the game. The poppy is essentially the rose, people. It has a very similar texture. The only difference is a black dot in the middle, and a name change. From far away, it looks the same. From close up, it looks almost the same. Its use is the same.
And, as Gnardak stated, roses don't grow on their own out there in the real world. They grow on bushes, another change that I wholeheartedly welcome. These new 2-block tall bushes and grass add more variety, and look good as well.
It's not a good idea to take things out of a game.
They want poppies? Great, add poppies. But they should be added, not replacing an existing graphic. I don't think anyone has a problem with them putting poppies into the game; we have a problem with them taking little red star-shaped flowers (whatever you want to call them; they don't really look like roses) out of the game.
Call the things "red starflowers" or something, Mojang, but put them back!

*I don't see why this has to be brought up in every Minecraft discussion, but whatever* It's Minecraft, there are magical floating squares, giant green monsters that explode, and swimming up waterfalls, I don't think ANYONE should care about a single rose growing.
The rose was something that was in the game since Alpha, they are changing alot of things, and updates have been going down the drain since 1.8.

I hate the "It meinkraf, no reelesm allowd" argument. It's a pitiful waste of rhetoric.
Minecraft is actually remarkably realistic, and only has inconsistencies with reality to either create better gameplay or to reduce lag. Changing the rose from a singular rose to a bush does not affect gameplay, and does not result in lag, and therefore the switch is appropriate.
The poppies are essentially just re-textured roses. I don't see why it matters. And if it really bothers you that much, you can easily edit the language files to change it back to "rose". Not to mention that they also added a rose bush.
Still, It owuld be nice if you could either craft or shear it for roses, just so they can be in the game. i do want to say I prefer to having poppies spawning naturally, as they can spawn in the real world in groups of one, while roses don't really do so...
Wow! I am shocked to see how many people DON'T want the rose back in. I personally want the rose. I also love the poppy and rose bush but why take out the rose, when the rose could be another addition to all the awesome flowers. In my opinion taking it out doesn't make sense.
Give one of them a new ID then. Or is something prohibiting this?
Jeb was trying to save coding space. I don't want to call him lazy, but that's basically what it is. Still, laziness in coding is generally considered a good thing, because if you let things get overcomplicated, they balloon out of control, making the code impossible to manage. Sure an extra block ID here and there won't cause big issues, but if you just add them willy-nilly, then making future changes becomes exponentially harder. And tracking down bugs is harder too.
Really though, Jeb should know better than this. I thought he already held to the maxim of "don't remove features". I guess the truth is he probably barely even thought about it. He decided to allocate 8 variables to the small flowers, and decided that poppy was higher priority than rose, considering a rose had representation elsewhere in the game.

He can’t, he has to remove bugs. Unless you really want a buggy game, then fine.
bugs aren't features. And Mojang has never been ambiguous about what's a bug and what's a feature. I don't know if you remember boat elevators, but Mojang was always adamant that it was a bug, and when people complained, that's what Mojang told them "it's always been a bug, so don't count on these things." Same deal with Block Update Detectors, it's always been considered a bug, even if it's sometimes beneficial or useful, Mojang's position is "don't count on your BUDs to keep working."
A flower, specifically the rose, there's no way that can be considered a bug.

Why can't we have both? Craft roses to rosebushes or the other way around.
What about people that actually put roses in flower pots and use them as decoration inside? Who puts a whole rose bush into their house? I've also seen players place roses in chests for other players. Well now you have to give them the whole rose bush? How romantic...
