My Spider Spawner at my main base stopped working suddenly yesturday. I do not know if this is a 1.6.2 "glitch" or if there is a design behind it not functioning. One thing I do know, in an ongoing game where we all take advantage of the natural resources (spawners being one of the best resources) if these spawners should fail, I have no need to stay there, or make a base in survival.
If 1.6.2 killed the spawners, it killed the game for me. I am not the best gamer out there, and taking away my "grind" changes the game after I came to like it. It is not the game I want to play. Moving three months of gaming in one spot is more than I am going to do for a $30 game.
Let me put it a different way, if Mojang wanted to create "Cube World" they should have started off with that in mind, not morph a perfectly good game into it. I don't like being a nomad, and there is not a effective way to move that much stuff, or replace the landscape I chose.
Oh, and just building a grinder to give you free resources so you don't need to do anything is fun?
If so, too bad. I'm against stuff like that.
Also, I have a spider spawner in my server and it's working. Try removing nearby lighsources. Also, it will only work if you are 6 blocks from the spawner.
It is a drop-down, 22 block drop for the spiders. Totally dark at spawner. AND 6 blocks? That would mean you are inside the room with it, no, it is 16 blocks. This is not my first rodeo, and I have played minecraft since beta...
If you do not like things like that, DONT USE THEM IN YOUR GAME. Do not tell me how to play the game I bought, it's not your concern. I do know this from gaming and watching other you tubers, the game has this in it, and that is what makes it fun for the VAST MAJORITY of players.
BTW, my game was on peaceful, that is why it wasn't spawning, I had tried out a new mob spawner design in creative and just forgot to turn it back... FYI, maybe 1.6.3 could fix THAT?? (create a memory for "options" on saved games??)
Ok, This topic has spawned a discussion that has a lot of players up at arms with Minecraft development. Making the game harder to farm entities for resources. One of the things that is good about Minecraft is the ability to do this. You don't HAVE to, but you CAN, and Minecraft keeps giving redstone more ability do help you DO this... Farming is what minecraft is about, and farming entities is another way of taming the game for yourself. Accomplishing this is part of the fun, and getting to the next BIGGER thing after... it in no way diminishes the game, it IS the game. Trying to change the game from what it is... Sometimes yes, it is good, but undermining what the overall design of the game is, no- that is stupid in MY opinion.
I am not impressed by the jump straight to "noob" assumptions by the_catmaker. Your opinion has been noted, and I am against IT.
Ok, i am not against grinding, but REALLY? You are wanting to completely quit the game because of it? Keep in mind that if you DO quit, no one will miss you, so using that as a reason to change anything is completely absurd. And no one cares that you have been on here sense beta, it doesn't make you any more important that someone who just bought the game. I know you found out the fix for you grinder, but still.

I agree with this from Pxex. Anyone who threatens to quit the game is doing so in vain. No one will care and no one will miss you. I'm not trying to put anyone down because I don't know any of these folks personally; it's just the truth of it. I played Blizzard games for years and people used to do this on the forums there all the time. Not a single person quitting had an impact on the company OR the player base. There are too many people playing this game now. Even if 10,000 quit today, it wouldn't be enough to make anyone blink an eye.

So you blame innocent people for jumping to "noob" assumptions but it turns out you made the stupid mistake of forgetting to switch back from peaceful? (Yes, I've made this mistake too but being all grumpy about it... I mean really?) And there is nothing that thecatmaker did wrong, in fact when he said 6 I'll bet on the fact that he typed a one before it, but he didn't press hard enough or something. Accusing people of your own mistakes just reinforces the fact that no one will care that you leave. (Besides, Mojang has your money, and that's all they care about :P)

Chicken or the egg, really, miss me, miss you... IDK, but I'm talking about changes in the game, and the discussion is about would the game be the same without being able to grind entities and make use of the spawners? No. Would I quit? Without some way of making up for the change... yes. Do I care about being missed? I think you miss the point. I care little for you guys I never have talked to, and right now I'm thinking you are just as useless as before I came to the forum, I know enough to find out my problems on my own. Like I said before, not the best gamer in the world, but I know what I like Minecraft for. I just don't want game developers to turn it into Minecrap.
I see how some people get labeled "troll" for being opinionated, so I'll keep the banter down to a minimum and stay on target about why I brought this up to begin with, game changes? Would you guys honestly stay on if you could not mine a spawner the way you do now? What if you could not make a mob spawner either? If all you play for is to go caving, then there is a part of the game you are not interested in... which makes you a different gamer than myself. One of this game's strengths is it vast appeal to different gamers of different types, deny that, and you are making a less popular game... game developers should know that is rule one.
I have not seen another game Mojang has made that even tempts me to play, so maybe this part of the game they seem to want to "weed out" which is the one thing that makes it a success? Food for thought.
All I know is that while I have been posting these few time I went up 30 levels, (3 times), and enchanted a sword of Looting II Bane of Arthropods, combined a pick ax of Efficiency 3 Fortune 2 with a Unbreaking 3; and made 6 enchantment books. I harvested 125 pumkins above the spawner, 110 wheat, 42 eggs, 72 carrots, 38 potatoes, (one poisonous) I killed 15 zombies 3 skeletons, and made 14 arrows. I made a diamond shovel and a diamond pick ax, which by the time you read this will be enchanted as well.
I know you don't care, this makes ME happy. (your happiness doesn't affect me, again with the assumptions)
If it takes me a week to do one of those things I did all this morning with the spider spawner, then YES, I will stop wasting my time on the game. NO I don't care that I won't be missed, as I only came here to find answers... turned out, it was my mistake. Thank heavens I won't have to quit the game, aren't you relieved? Hehe!
I plan to go shaft mining with the new pickax, to get more diamonds for better armor for Nether hunting so I can get Goldenrods, I have not found so far. (I need to make a brewing station for potions)
Overall, I have been VERY happy with the upgrades to the game, some aren't as they were more invested in the "old" ways of beta play than myself, but for the ease of play, the changes were worth it. the 1.5 "Horse Update"was by far the best thing to happen in a long time, but for the glitches which they cleaned up in 1.6... so- I'm all about new things in the game, just not changing our ability to experience it faster. How many of you goto the Nether just to "fast travel" to another location? What about wheat farms, or cattle herding, using a spawner is almost identical. It takes time and effort to set one up, and time to spawn, so what is the problem??
I still think making saved options for the game is the best suggestion I have seen thus far, Maybe one of you guys that is all about community forum crap can direct me to where to put that suggestion in? Or take the glory, throw that suggestion in? Positive change for a change?
I skimmed over your post (Heck, I'm not going to read all of that) and it seems as if you are just acting like you are the only one in the Minecraft community that matters. Self centered, I believe the word is. I know people have their opinions, and I respect that, but you obviously were threatening to quit (Although indirectly, it was obvious) the game if things were not how you like it. If you are going to quit, just do it. If you shout it out to the world then you are pretty much wanting the attention.
No one cares. You were wrong about spawners and threw a hissy fit at people on this forum and about mojang. Maybe you should get your fact straight before getting angry at everyone. It only makes you look like an ass.
Besides I don't think the team really intended for mob farming like that. Dinnerbone was even planning to nerf them so they spawned less but didn't at the request of many. I use mob farms myself occasionally and I think they can be somewhat "OP" at times. I wouldn't care if they were nerfed but I can understand people would be upset about that. I don't think like many people would leave though really over that. Mob spawners are not the only way to farm mobs and people will find other ways.
People would be very angry if mob spawners were removed because it's been used so much to get drops and more importantly xp. Removing/nerfing spawners could probably be one of the most controversial changes Mojang could ever make imo. People use spawners because hunting for mobs is such a hassle and many people on the forums have pointed out that the xp system is flawed.
"Oh, and just building a grinder to give you free resources so you don't need to do anything is fun?
If so, too bad. I'm against stuff like that."
^^^^ The_catmaker giving his/her opinion so venomously wasn't necessary but the op has shown that he/she appears to be very dramatic, rude, and self centered like someone else said. (possibly venting after being enlightened on the subject, therefor clouded mind)
OP, I think it wasn't really necessary to get defensive because the people who posted (although blunt) were kind of stating their opinion and responding to your posts by pointing out things.
P.S OP (original poster) if you want to make amends just apologize and leave the thread.
Spawner-based mob farms are easy to build and not very good(slow, only single type of drop, no creeper spawners).
Nearly all other xp-farm options are better.
If they would make spawners stop spawning I would just build spider farm that works without spawner block.
(I only use spawners to get string and spider eyes. Overworld mobfarm or enderender are much better for xp farming.
I think we need to stop crying that we will quit minecraft because of little changes like this.
I like using the spawners, they are good to make a quick and easy xp farm, but now I have moved on and use a large dark room spawner which can change from xp to automatic item farm with the flick of a switch, and separates the spiders from the other mobs. I am in no way a genius, there are infinite designs to these things. All you need is a little time and effort and you can get much better than a spider spawner grinder.
