The carpet recipe should give 4 units each at the very least.
1.6 is sounding pretty awesome, very excited about the updated respiration enchantment, being able to see better underwater will make expanding my underwater base and fixing faulty exterior block placement so much easier.
Hey all, thought I'd weigh in on the new snapshot.
Before you reply, yes, I am aware that this is a work-in-progress and I don't expect everything to be finished or that there should be no bugs. However, I do want to offer some knowledge and my opinion on some of the new features. We'll go through them piece-by-piece.
Carpets:
First off, the crafting recipe is a balancing failure. I'd never make these in survival, even on my server where I have tons of wool just sitting around. Very cool idea though, and I'm happy they introduced them. Looking forward to the finished product.
Horses:
Very good job Mojang! Impressive, even if most of it was from Mo' Creatures. I support this.
Horse saddles:
Now the criticism. We already have saddles. It's completely unnecessary to make a second version of the same thing. Just take them out and make a recipe for the original saddles, Mojang is kinda wasting people's time with this one to be honest.
Horse Armour:
First off, it's called Barding. Google "Horse barding" and you'll see. Not armour. Secondly, balancing factors should be considered. I personally haven't tested exactly how much damage the diamond horse armour repels, but from what I hear it's quite alot. Minecraft isn't really interesting if it's impossible to die. I'd be much happier if they made it just leather, gold and iron barding, simply for balancing if nothing else. And if you could dye the leather barding... yes yes yes!
Leashes:
Kinda cool, but I personally think they should be restricted to tamed animals only; for example, leading your dogs and cats around lava pools, etc. Putting them on any animal really seems to only make things too easy, and we already have a way to make animals follow us.
Hay Bales:
They have little to no use right now, so I don't have an opinion. Cool texture, I guess. If they acted as a Wheat Block this would be, IMO the best way to do it. Would lead to really cool storage options for your wheat farms.
Respiration enchantment:
Makes you see underwater. Finally, I've waited a long time for this. No criticism, just happiness.
Things I think should be added:
Saddlebags:
Self-explanatory. A few extra inventory slots on your horse! Would either replace barding or would be included in leather barding.
A Horse UI:
To make putting saddles/barding on easier, and to facilitate the above. Similar to a chest or furnace pop-up screen if you're not clear on the meaning of UI.
On Java 6 and OpenGL 2.0 useage:
I'm not a techie person so I don't know how this will change things in the game too much, but if it means plus FPS without losing too much of the old feel I'm all for it.
That's all, folks. Thanks for reading!

It has been confirmed that donkeys won't be able to wear armor, but instead they will have the ability to place chests on them.

Message me yours if you want to trade in Animal Crossing: New Leaf or just need some friends to play with. I can also do Pokemon trades in Pokemon X(or Y), but I don't have any good stuff, and the only good stuff I have is not for trade so...send me requests anyway.

Horses get armour, while donkeys get storage. It's balanced, that way.

"Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best."
No its not. you would not use the same saddle that fits a pig on a horse now would you? (yes people ride pigs.)
They're also many different saddle types and shapes for different horses and riding styles. Really making more than one saddle is kinda pointless because they vary so widely that two kinds can't come close to covering it and really only add an unnecessary item to the game. In this instance, gameplay > realism.
Maybe the carpet can be used as decoration like pots, so we dont need to waste our effort killing sheeps to create carpet and people easily grieves through the carpet
I wouldn't mind streamlining all saddles into the new saddles. They look better and are craftable which is lovely for playing smp.
I don't like the "only tamed animals" request to leashes only because i've made about 6 different, useful devices that rely on holding farm animals in the air
Donkeys/Mules have the chest you can put in them (although it doesn't yet work)
My one complaint is that one of my horses can run twice as fast as my donkey but when i leash that horse while riding the donkey it refuses to do anything but trot and inevitably breaks the leash
There are already 16 colors in the snapshot texture pack "cloth_0" through "cloth_15" from Mojang and the texture pack creators are already gearing up to work on modifying their own packs now that they know what many of the new texture images they will need are.
This. In my own pack I plan on using CTM eventually to make carpet look different than wool. (IE actually looking like carpet.)
No about the leashes for tamed animals only, its great being able to leash onto other animals too. I hope they add the ability to put the leash on villagers too. Then i could get a gallows set up in my village.
The problem with leashes on villagers isn't the gallows thing, it's that it becomes very very easy to maintain a village once you allow this. Just tie 2 villagers inside each house and light it well. Boom, you have villagers who can breed while you build, and they can't wander off into the night. Each time you build a new structure, simply tug a couple villagers into it. It would make village maintenance absolutely trivial.

You have to remember, the horses need to eat hay bails to heal, so even with diamond armor, the horses can easily die due to having to eat to heal.
The leashes are amazing because, if gamechap and bertie's video is any indication, they work on testificates! Finally you can transport villagers around!
Or leash one so he's hanging by a pole and beat him like a pinata; there's two types of people.
I agree with a lot of what you say, except Horse saddles. Pigs and horses have two completely different measurements for saddles. I dont understand how it's a waste of time. I also love your critique style, its the best I've seen on the forums.

For me its the name. If the original saddle is going to stay with just its name, Saddle, then really it would kind of mean that its a saddle for any general creature that is mountable. So I think they should change it to 'Pig Saddle.'

I got that, at the time of writing I was unaware of this. Thanks for pointing it out, I agree.

...but that's just like, my opinion, man.

Just my opinion
I think it's balanced enough.
By the way about the leashes; do they put suffocation if they tied on leashes if it's in gallow style?
