Too bad they couldn't just have put a switch on the dispenser to toggle between "shoot" mode and "drop" mode. I guess that would also require a "soft" way to switch it too, thru a redstone signal only... oh well that's why I don't design, I just play.
Do they appear identical? Would it make a little more sense to have them appear slightly different? (Mouth is different I see). I've already confused the trap chests with the regular chests numerous times. I know for chests, it has to be that way otherwise trapped chests wouldn't work too well...
the dispenser is getting a lot more functionality for actually firing things, including (finally!) TNT! I hope they extend on that. Planting seeds makes sense to me.
...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
Just click the "Watch on YouTube" button. It works there.

Not for us...

Dang it! YouTube says it finished uploading and processing, why is it not working. I'm sure it will work in a bit.

Isn't this identical functionality to the hopper itself?
A dropper could put coal in a furnace powered minecart which may be a use, unless your talking about TNT minecarts.
That'd be a dispensor feature.
Droppers just move items around.
Dispensors do things with said items.
That unique enough?
No. Hoppers don't require power, they can only receive and dispense items in specific directions, and they can't drop items on the ground.
A dropper only shoots out the item entity.
