Hi guys, I haven't played Minecraft in a bit and decided to start on a server with some friends. I really like the idea of the anvil and enchanting books, so you can maintain "super items" instead of constantly enchanting multiple things to get the exact enchantments you want.
I have a few issues/questions though.
I enchanted a book with Unbreaking III. According to the wiki, it can be applied to anything with durability. However it doesn't seem to want to stick to my bow. I put the bow in, and then the book, and when I click to combine them the bow does show Unbreaking III in the window, but once I pull it out the book comes flying out of my inventory and the enchantment is removed. Then the next mob I kill will put me at the exp level I had before the combination. Can you not add Unbreaking to a bow, or is maybe on of our server mods/plugins interfering with this?
Second, I'm curious about naming items. For some reason it's really expensive. Is there any advantage to naming items? For example I just enchanted a chestplate; I wanted to name it but it's asking for 34 levels of experience to do so. Should I always name my items before enchanting them in an enchanting tables?
Third question, can I put Feather Falling on a helmet, or respiration on boots? Or do they need to go on the armor they would normally appear on to function?
Finally, since the way that Protection enchantments have changed, anyone have an idea of an optimal armor enchantment setup? Before you just needed 1 Protection IV and 3 Protection III to become nearly invincible, I'm curious what kind of a spread you'd need now. Can you have 2 Protection types on the same piece of armor, ie. Fire Protection III + Protection IV? I'm assuming not.

Interesting that you mentioned that. Same happend to my girlfriend trying to put Unbreaking III on a diamond sword. We thought it was because she already had 4 enchants on it (from a random level 30 enchant) and maybe 4 was the max.
Well I can tell you that naming items is just a convenience and doesn't really change anything much about the items.
And I'm no anvils/enchantment expert, so I can't answer your other questions.

I was trying to place Unbreaking III on to a bow with Infinity I and Power III.
The Unbreaking on the bow problem: the EXACT same thing happened to me. I enchanted it with the book, it said Unbreaking, I took the new bow, the bow didn't have it (unbreaking), I lost the levels, then when I killed a spider, my xp went back up to the previous level. (34)
I'm thinking it must be a bug of some kind, cause I've been having the same problem. However - it seems that if you collect a few more levels than it's asking for (so, it tells you it'll be 13 levels to apply the book to an item, and you level up to 16 or 17) then it will 'stick' instead of dropping the book and the item. I now have a very, VERY nice diamond sword as a result...
