I only have 1 thing to say: Get your facts and numbers right, actually think. Find out how much materials a beacon costs, before going and saying how much you think it is, which tends to always come up WAY above what the actual number is.
Also, you dont need half the stuff people are saying you need. Tell straight-up facts, not something you believe might be right. For example: You dont need diamond armor, if you use startegy you dont NEED any. You dont NEED any good weapons, you dont even need the 3 diamonds to make a nether portal, create it with lava sorces frozen in mid-air to create the obsidian blocks in the right formation. So, all you need is 3 iron, a lava pool, water, and soul sand. Period, you dont need anything else
No one in the right mind, would take the time to make a"natural" obsidian portal. And also, you would need good weapons because over time the wither regens health and you would continuously need to run it down. Your logic has been denied ^.^
The second I will put at the bottom of my active mine, and use Haste II to greatly speed up my mining rate. Time is the most precious resource of all, IMO, and that's the only way to get Haste if you're playing survival without cheats.
Why bother? By the time you got enough iron to build the biggest beacon, you could have mined out a 3/4ths of the entire 80x80 area. Yes, that is EVERY SINGLE stone block below Y=64, so if you don't mine out the entire Y axis you might not even get enough iron to build the biggest beacon. Not to mention that while a base won't cover an 80x80 area, the mine underneath the base will certainly cover a much larger area.

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
actually with out preparation the wither would be unbeatable
I prepared BUT BOY that thing took me by surprise It was like PEWPEPWPEPWEPEPWPEPWPEPWPEPWPEPWPEPWPEPWEP I was like EEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

The last three portals I made were constructed with dirt braces, and lava buckets.
Color me wrong-minded.
Also, I would like to confirm that with a little bit of creative building; the wither is gather-able, and kill-able armorless with a stone sword.
The beacon also makes a perfect finishing touch to my restored stronghold. (Ala; the old Cubeism challenge)
Very doable; for the right (wrong in this case) minded.

Hey guise, I killed the wither with an empty inventory.
On creative.
Anyway, seems impossible. Doesn't matter how much you try to dodge, you can't dodge a thing in the second stage and you can't dodge in the first either without speed pots. Even then, in the one video I saw where the player killed him without armor, they had a diamond sword with Smite IV and a strength potion and a regen potion. Anything less and they would have been slaughtered, even with health potions. With only a plain stone sword, I don't see it as possible.
So, video or it didn't happen.

The Wither is a BOSS.It's not like *Hello!Today Im going to kill the Wither*
but a good designed boss has avoidable attacks and multiple ways to kill it. The withers second stage is not only immune to arrows but iit's attacks are unavoidable.
edit: so is the ender dragon but it's attacks are avoidable, and you can stop its health regen unlike the wither where if you don't have a decent dps, he won't die

I'm guessing the video you mentioned was mine, some day I might beat him without using potions. Have to agree that it doesn't seem possible with a stone sword, the only way I can think of is trapping it in bedrock so that it can't hit you.

Eh, actually it is, one day I felt like killing it with no armor so I just went and did that. The wither is a very easy boss if you know what you're doing.

I really don't see how this has stretched into three pages.
1. You don't HAVE to fight the wither.
2. You don't HAVE to make the largest pyramid.
3. You can make experience and iron farms if you wish to make getting the materials easier.
4. Getting the Skulls isn't hard with a Looting sword.
5. Some people are completionists and like things like this as something to work towards.

The problem with the Wither is that he's a bad boss in nearly every regard. Sure, i've been proven that you do not, in fact, need armor, but that doesn't mean he is a good boss. If you want a challenging fight; you'd be better off fighting the Enderdragon or installing a mod since challenge is irrelevant. IMO the Wither is a good idea but he isn't a good boss. I'd rather fight the Enderdragon than him.

Unless you're starting out right now, by the time you're ready to farm Wither Skeletons to get their skull and take on the Wither, you already have enough iron to make the beacon's pyramid. The Beacon block is meant to be the most epic end-game item and isn't supposed to be something that is easy to get.

How so?

Again, opinion. Mods can be challenging but vanilla is what is being focused on. The Ender Dragon is only able to be killed once. Afterwards, fight the Wither.

No the wither is easy to kill if you cheese it and basically trap it.
The wither's easy even if all you have is a strength potion, and enchanted sword and an enchanted bow. If you add in enchanted armor and some other potions the wither's a joke. Even the ender dragon is more challenging.
Ender Dragon is the most useless mob in the game and doesn't even deserve a title of a boss...
I think bats deserve the titla as most useless mob. I will agree that the ender dragon shouldn't be called a boss but the same could be said for the wither.
A poor idea to craft a boss for yourself I think. Getting gear and materials is one thing, but usually only depends what kind of challenge do you want to make it for yourself.
I agree that being able to craft it is a bad idea, it should have just been something that spawns very rarely in the Nether or in certain locations. I don't really see what you can do to make the wither challenging though, I've fought it with no armor before and it wasn't a challenge.
Wither has more HP than Enderdragon and is much harder, only reason to think it should be done as one of the last things you do in game (figuratively).
It having more hp doesn't make a difference, all you have to do is back up while shooting arrows at it then once it's half dead spam left click to kill it. The ender dragon isn't much better but I still prefer it over the wither.
Opinion.
Fact, actually. First of all, you have to grind mobs just to fight him; something that has always been optional up until now (the biggest reason for it was EXP but there are now other ways to get EXP). Then, when you actually fight him, you discover that he is a gear check and is therefore not a challenge; if you don't have enchanted diamond armor or a speed potion and enchanted diamond weaponry, you'll die. No exceptions. (As for strategy, there is none; there are only two methods: one, you fight him normally, or two, you suffocate him in bedrock. Your reward is paltry and consumes a ton of time for a meager effect. The only good thing about him is the potion effect.
How so?
See above.

The problem is, the Wither isn't a challenge. At all. Seriously, he's a gear check; he can't have a challenge. (Yes, even wolves are tougher than him.) If you want a challenge, you either get a mod or alternatively fight the enderdragon or impose challenges on yourself. And believe me, if you're looking for a challenge in Vanilla, you won't find it. Especially not if you're looking for a challenge in the Wither.
Opinion.
Hence the words "IMO".

I disliked the idea from the start. Originally, the summoning method I wanted involved a floating island and the Wither sealed away on a certain block that released him when you poked it. Now, I would prefer creating a wither altar instead. Basically, you make a triangular formation out of wither skulls and netherbrick fences and make the floor of it out of netherbrick with a 3x3 obsidian pedestal. Every overworld full moon (or every overworld night in in the nether) he'll spawn at midnight.
Obviously the explosion wouldn't bode well for the altar, so perhaps the explosion would not destroy terrain.

With the current combat system there's not much they can do to create something that's actually a challenge is the problem.

my point is having to rig the battlefield doesn't make the wither a well designed boss.
