... I have read this... to me... the old gravel actually looked like pebbles.... the new gravel looks like an ugly cement of cobblestone and grey stony nothingness..... we all have our thoughts....... BUT HOW IS THIS IN ANY WAY AN IMPROVEMENT?!?!
The joy of Minecraft is that you don't need to like how any of the blocks look. Complaining about something being ugly when it is entirely optional to even look at, since you can very easily change what they look like without a problem, is so counter-intuitive.
For my 2 cents, I think the old texture looked more gravel like, but i hated the color. I thing the new gravel looks okay, but it does blend too much with cobblestone. It might actually look better if they just darkend it a few shades.
On the other hand, I have found that it adds a bit of challenge as it is somewhat harder to notice from regular rock. I almost got killed by a cave in for the first time in a very long time.

... (cries to self) i do realize that.... but this seriously ticks me off.... because the gravel looks so.... non-minecraft-ish

If you realize it, then why are you whining? Suck it up, and change it. Jeb thinks it looks fine for Minecraft, and if you don't agree with him, stop complaining and change it to better suite your needs.
With all my muster, you are right... I will not bother you any longer... Il still have my opinions, and this will make my pixel art more difficult, as finding a replacement block shall be.... frustrating... I feel very immature for this "whining"... Meh, I'm a Minecraft addict, why should i complain in the first place? (rhetorical question)

Oh stop whining. The old gravel looked like total crap and i wanted to kill the maker of that texture. The new one confuses me that its cobble, but i can get used to that.
Why is there always haters on every single update?! Even the bugfix updates! The trick is to embrace the new and changed aspects of Minecraft, instead of a biased judgement on them based on what you were used to. That is why I never hate or complain on the updates, never.
Look, most people like the new features, (like myself) but some things in updates are just really pointless. For example, the new gravel texture Its nice.. but there was no need to change it. Also, as a server owner, 1.3.1 is pretty much Minecraft hell. Every update is a pain as an owner, but 1.3.1 is a massive learning curve. Not to mention that netbooks that could barely run the game before will probably struggle to even push out a playable framerate, if they have an atom processor like most netbooks do. The way I see it is- like the update? Go for it. Dont like it? MCNostalgia is your friend.

Pwned
Notch made the old texture and admitted that it wasn't very good but he doesn't do textures.
Jens didn't make the new texture, Junkboy did, who is the creator of most of the textures.

They changed it because Notch said a while back that they would, and a bunch of threads responded by popping up and complaining about how ugly to old gravel texture was.
So now they've changed it.

Wah. Save the texture and replace the new one with it. Problem solved. Instead of ranting about something you can fix and avoid, do something about it. Damn.
Just because Jeb took over lead developing minecraft, it doesn't mean that Notch isn't there helping anymore. Jebs the lead, who oversees it and all that. He doesn't make the decisions on changes to the game alone, so stop saying he ruined minecraft.
And if you dont like the gravel texture, so what? Some people do (I dont care, i use a texture pack). You can change it if you want, or look for a texture pack that is the defualt version with old gravel, just as easily. So quit complaining and man up
People complain about the old gravel, new gravel was born
People complain about the new gravel, newer gravel is born.
The cycle will never end... I think this gravel is an improvement though. It's not a great texture, but it's not a very bad texture. I think it's alright... But if you hate the texture, you could get a new texture pack or easily copy and paste the old gravel into the new gravel.
you can go in to the file and change just the gravel texture if it bothers you that much
It's really a waste of everybody's time to change the textures every time you get a new minecraft jar. In my opinion here, Mojang shouldn't change textures it unless it NEEDS changing.
On the other hand, I have found that it adds a bit of challenge as it is somewhat harder to notice from regular rock. I almost got killed by a cave in for the first time in a very long time.
i havent played minecraft in like 4 years lol

Netbooks are not for gaming.
And as said before, use a texture pack.
I bought Minecraft Alpha on 7/13/10
