I don't like the fact that they are merging, but I understand why. And I tried the snapshot as well with no lag. Minus the fact my Macbook Pro sounds like a jet sometimes, nothing is wrong. The simplest way (imo) to deal with this is use the /whitelist on command and not whitelist anybody.
Doomsayer...
The sky is not falling, the game is in no way ruined by the merge.
If anything, it is going to get better because the combined coding.
Already many multiplayer bugs have been destroyed.
The only ones I can say that I've experienced on that list are 5 and 6, neither of which are issues at all.
Only serious error that I've encountered is good ol' hitbox errors. Which is only a problem with spiders and creepers. You're going to have to deal with more damage from spiders than you're used to, and you're going to have to sprint attack on creepers.
I'm going to keep Minecraft at 1.2.5 on one computer, and update to 1.3 on my other. I know that not everyone has this option, so you're going to have to decide which you like better. I'm sure Jeb is trying to fix this, and if there is nothing he can do to fix these with or soon after 1.3, I'll be a little disappointed. But, I suppose the new features that we can get with this merge will be worth the wait.

EDIT: For those wondering, no, this isn't in the context that they haven't been fixed.

Some people just seem to post the same arguments about the merge that other people put up. These arguments aren't solid ones on the grounds that:
1. Its not supposed to be laggy. People have a tendency to think of snapshots as something to play with. While it can be, its mostly to test.
2. The final version wont be this laggy. And if you have really bad lag, its probably your computer and not Mojang's fault.
3. You don't have to make your single player world into multiplayer. I don't get how this is so hard to understand. JUST DON'T OPEN THE WORLD TO OTHER PEOPLE. Its on an invite basis, just keep your world closed.
4. I feel like this feature started out with people who don't understand anything about this merge badmouthing it without any idea of what they should be saying so other people get caught up in this strange misunderstanding. STOP SPREADING THE FIRE.

I have had a lot of problems since the new merger. ( But i think it is a good thing )
I recognize the snapshots may be problematic. I do not know if this lagginess that effects my game play will be fixed or not.
I wish I knew how mojang was looking at this - a problem or not, will be fixed or not, etc....
My current problems include difficulty using minecarts, arrows, turning in time to face an opponent (timing is off) and travel.
Travel being the worst issue currently. I am not accostumed to STOPing so the chunks can load. And it is hard not to use the xray vision i have suddenly been given.
I find it peculiar how these extensive moments of lag in the snapshots' single-player are never recorded. I wonder why.
Because the people who are having lag with the snapshots are playing on outdated computers, A.K.A Their computer would explode if they tried to run both Minecraft and a screen recorder.
Not that peculiar...

Bgbba, none of those SMP bugs will be there when it's finished because there won't be latency or synching issues. Latency is impossible if the server and client are on the same machine.

If you run a video capture program on your computer you also slow down just about any game you play, which only gives fuel to the other side saying it isn't the game's fault but the slowdown from the program.
Also, the lag occurring generally blends together when played in video and is non-apparent because, to the player, the actions they input are a second behind the actions on screen. To prove anything, the person would have to record them with a camera and sync it precisely to the in-game time.
Short version: Lag is hard to capture because it is generally something you "feel". Only the person experiencing the lag is in a position to claim they have it.
It is also worth noting everyone has a different computer build which react differently to the game code. Every update FPS drops and increases are both had due to this fact. In other words, just because you have no lag doesn't mean everyone else doesn't either.
I pray that, with the merging of SSP+SMP, they FIX as many of the problems in multiplayer as ADD problems to singleplayer, to the point where it is at least tolerable.
They did finally get rid of ghost TNT, that was annoying. Still, I've played multiplayer servers, things as simple as a pressure plate activated door just DON'T WORK because of the sheer lag. It's awful, and will break every last one of the adventure maps I try to play.
If this patch didn't come with so much crucial stuff I'd just skip out on it and keep the old single player, but all the adventure maps will use books, that much I'm confident.
I'm having MULTIPLAYER lag. It's not my computer. I had slow connection, that's why I'm lagging in MULTIPLAYER.
In the newest snapshot they merge SP into SMP. So I had MULTIPLAYER lag in SINGLEPLAYER - which is NEVER happened before.

I have no problem with the latest snapshot whether I play multiplayer on my LAN or single player. Perhaps the problem is your computer. Maybe it's between the chair and keyboard?
