I say let cows drop 1 to 4 pieces of leather and 0-1 steaks. Then increase the amount of pork dropped. Otherwise this change simply makes pigs even more useless and makes getting book shelves too hard.
At the very least make it 2 books for every 3 paper 1 leather instead of just 1.
thing is, i dont have plans to need more than 30 bookshelves in survival. i still think that at least 1 leather per cow is a fine idea that would solve our problems nicely.
that way you would need only 300 dead cows for 300 bookshelves, and thats if you were unlucky enough to get only one leather EVERY TIME. if the drop rate was changed to 1-3, we would all be happy.
Actually, if the drop rate was changed to a guaranteed 1 with the chance of a higher number, then you would not have 300 Bookshelves after killing 300 Cows. You wouldn't even have 150, actually. You'd be using my numbers.
The only way to make it so that 300 Cows equals 300 Bookshelves is to make it so that 1 Leather is able to be made into 3 Books.

EDIT: for 1 leather per cow
You would have 300 books, or 100 bookshelves, which is a **** TON of books and bookshelves.
I would never need 100 bookshelves EVER, but if i was someone who did - having a cow farm would be a reasonable thing to do.
Everyone in this topic seems to look at this from a tedium standpoint, but what about those of us who refuse to kill animals? We just got shut out from another portion of the game because Jens randomly decided to change a recipe that's been around since alpha.
As for feathers and ink sacs, why not let us shear chickens and make our own ink from coal and milk or something? Minecraft's gameplay already adopted a steady decline during the 1.9 prereleases, why kill the roleplay aspect by shutting out animal lovers?

You are comparing the rarity of Diamonds to the insane number of Cows one needs to kill to get a decent amount of Bookshelves.
I've always factored in a 1.5 for every time I bring up numbers.
Because, you know, breeding doesn't make 2 Cows for every Cow bred? It makes 1. 2 Cows becomes 3. 4 Cows becomes 6. Etc.
That's right. I am. It takes a rather long time to farm enough diamonds for a diamond armor set. Same with cows.
Also: Let's see how long it would take to breed around 100 cows to kill, which would totally supply anyone enough bookshelves for an enchanting table. It takes around 20 minutes for a cow to grow. Let's say we start out with around 10 cows that we find in the wild. I'll be estimating for time's sake. I also don't have a calculator on me.
0 - 10 - Breed
5 - 10 adults and 5 children. In 5 minutes, adults can breed again, so-56 - 10 adults and 10 children.
10 - 10 adults and 15 children.
15 - 10 adults and 20 children.
20 - 15 adults and 23 children.
25 - 20 adults and 28 children.
30 - 25 adults and 36 children.
35 - 32 adults and 44 children.
Now that's 76 right there. I'm too lazy to continue, but it would take much less then an hour to get a nice 100 cows. And of course, it only gets faster from there.
Edit: Oh yeah. If my math isn't horribly incorrect or something, this is less the the time required to grow the necessary reeds.

^ Thank you for this.
What Mackinz was saying didn't seem right to me either.
You're not including the wheat which is difficult and also time-consuming to grow in vast amounts or the lag that would result from having 100 cows plus the rest of your farm animals in a small area. Not taking a side, just a point.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.

I was assuming anyone would have a rather large wheat farm by the time they needed a fully-powered enchanting table.
Also, 100 cows don't produce that much lag. They really don't. Try it yourself. Use SPC and spawn 100 cows.
What Notch did prior to the full release have left permanent scars in this game, but I can't stop scratching them, they're freaking infected!
About the love of animals, this is where paperbacks would shine through. Having books crafted with one more piece of paper instead of leather could make books which couldn't be written in but still be used for bookshelves.
Who wants to carry around 2 different kinds of books in their inventory?
what if i find a library and what to break a bookshelf to make a writable book? I can't now.

Well, you're not significantly off so I can't exactly call you on numbers, but then again, you're assuming that the player has infinite space for the Cows and will always breed the maximum amount of Cows around.
What with that "All animals follow Wheat" glitch, I'd say that no one in their right mind would do it like that.

I'm going to agree with this, because I believe it's a balanced idea for both people who do farm animals and those who don't. Both Redstonevet and Mackinz have acted like whatever they say is logic, therefore what anyone else says is idiotic and that they need to "face reality". This has gone beyond logic, to the point where it's just people saying each other are wrong .

I like animal breeding, as I'm sure many others do.

oops, my bad. still, it would help.
Like me and many others.
what you consider tedious and what someone else considers tedious - is purely a matter of opinion

how many others, exactly? just curious...

They do get annoying though.

besides all the MC books are bound in leather.
What with that "All animals follow Wheat" glitch, I'd say that no one in their right mind would do it like that.
There were a number of them towards the beginning of the thread.
There are also plenty of others who probably have given up trying to talk to you guys.
Also, a huge number of them might not even come to the Recent Updates forum, if they ever use the forums at all.

Ok fine. It takes around 10 minutes to make a large fenced-in area. Add 10 minutes to the clock.
I like animal breeding, as I'm sure many others do.

really? good for you, then.
i could say the same to you...
now that's probably a stretch. how would you know?
