I'm somewhat hesitant to suggest it..but how about "shearing" a cow of leather? Then you don't kill it, and perhaps you can do it later. No meat of course. You could also get feathers from chickens this way....
Just throwing the idea out there.
Leather is the cow's skin, so I don't think we can do that.
I'd be fine with it if cows dropped more damn leather.
Dude, you told me nothing I don't already know. I'm just suggesting a possible way, in minecraft, of getting leather without killing a cow. You may need to suspend belief in reality for a second. But I admit, the idea may not gel with some, or even, many. Or any. I'll shut up now.
I wouldn't expect live skinning to make it into the game any time soon.

I love how calmly and collectively everyone is talking about making leather out of human flesh. Not once does anyone point out what kind of horrible person that makes any one individual "Steve" or the fact that stories about Nazis making furniture out of human flesh is one of the most commonly noted elements of WW2.
Yeah, Steve can eat human flesh to survive, or he can feed chunks of it to dogs, but that doesn't mean he has to, and that doesn't mean that war crimes should just be haphazardly incorporated. What you're all talking about is going into a room full of books made from the flesh of people and sitting in front of an altar while praying to a dark god for blessings on your weapons. That's not what Minecraft is typically supposed to be, that's the introduction to a new bad guy in Game of Thrones.

Statistics show that people who tell others they need to get a new computer are twice as likely to use "gay" as a negative descriptor and will most likely never see genitals in real life, at least while not in prison.
I think leather should not be included because i have never found a cow in my life,
I have over 10 stacks of sugar cane (reeds). :/
I also dont understand why there would be lether in a book...

Nah, that's Minecraft the way it should be. Also, we humans have to drop flesh after death in PvP.

Fun post, but you know you're over thinking this. If you want to play that game, then the argument of a new ruling paradigm can simply be made. You're the only human left alive in the world, so you're the one who makes the rules of what is acceptable or not. If you wanted to take the rotten human flesh and wear it as your underwear, who is there to accost you for your actions?

These are rudimentary books, so the covers are normally made from leather.
No one's said it to be hard (other then the poor guy who hasn't been able to find a cow yet), but many have pointed out the tediousness of it.
Having Steve drop leather would be an amusing solution. Imagine people setting up lava traps on their own spawn points.
The thing is, in a game like Minecraft, there has to be SOME tedium to certain parts of it. Certain things are balanced out by the time and effort it takes to do it instead of it being challenging.
Take obsidian for example. It's hard to dig, hard to caste into the shape you want, but incredible useful. It's explosion proof and lets you make nether portals.
Obsidian is balanced out by the chore it is to mine it.
Does there really? Or even should there really? In terms of books? You're comparing their usefulness to that of obsidian?
Here's an example. A single chamber lined with bookcases, about 400 such blocks in all. That's nearly 1,200 leather. Harvesting 1,200 leather? Fun? Haha, no. The +3,000 reeds and 600 logs were quite enough in my opinion. Now consider the kind of large scale builds people go for - this is just a small room.

That's fine within the context of the game, but given the fact that the game is a fictional construct within the frames of actual reality, it needs to adhere somewhat to the morals and ethics of the real world, and although I was kidding to an extent, I really do find the idea over the top. It's not inherently different from suggesting that Jeb should implement a means to sexually violate the testificates so they will excrete ink and quills will be easier to make.
Although there are harsh realities within the game and inexplicable cannibalism, the fact remains that Notch and subsequently Jeb have made a conscious effort to maintain a relatively child-friendly environment, and encouraging the player to collect and piece together human flesh in order to create furniture steps outside those boundaries.

Since when did books become "overpowered"?!
Their usefulness is close to that of obsidian, if not greater. They are used to get higher level enchants.

How does this make them overpowered? 400 blocks of any constructed blocks is going to take time and resources to build and place. Don't get me wrong, I can understand your concern, but I feel this is just a natural change to Minecraft. It seems reasonable to add leather to the book recipe, and Minecraft players are resourceful little bastards; players will cope with it in some efficient and intelligent manner.

Keep in mind that I was being facetious with my reply. I think getting leather from human skin would be an odd and silly addition to the game. I was merely arguing for things within that world's (Minecraft's) limited context.

The world of Minecraft is extremely barbaric and dangerous at times. I've never seen a man fall into knee-deep lava and die horribly, but I imagine it's a terribly gruesome sight in real life. Regardless, if one could make leather from rotten flesh then I don't really see people drawing too strongly of a connection between their diary being made of human skin. If they do, it probably wouldn't bother them since it's just a game.
Heaven forbid having to work a little more for something.
Leather material is completely justified and makes perfect sense. If you want to make a life-story about yourself and have 1000 books then you might as well use notepad.
I'm not too bothered by this change. Finding cows and breeding enough to make an enchanting room is just another thing to do in the massive magical world of Minecraft.

This. It's not just about the enchanting room bookshelves alone but the builders who use the block as decor. The time needed to make this block in mass is far to excessive. No one can argue this point. I'm not playing WoW. This is not another job.
If change does go live, yes, I will deal with it. But the point of testing snapshots is to find what works and what doesn't. IMO this doesn't.

I remain unmoved by your argument. Players will adapt, just as they always have.

Btw, this is the worst idea I've ever heard.

Step 2. Breed cows.
Step 3. Kill old cows.
Repeat 2 and 3 until you are happy.
It's not that hard people.

Besides, You are getting food while killing them as well, so mind as well get some leather while you're at it.

How to not die in a cave
An Cow.
An Chicken.
An Squid.
Some Sugar Cane.
Squids became more useful.
I like my books made out of wood.
