I made something similar to Abdiel, except mine has got 'some' red stone wire working it.
But the the thing is, I have made it so the blocks that have the red stone wire on it don't move, the pistons move automatically, but I didn't use any red stone repeaters. I used Hexahedron's 'Boat Clock Generator' and hooked it up to the pistons.
If your wandering how I hooked the 'Boat Clock Generator' to the pistons whilst it in the air, I made a pole reaching the pistons, but took away every 2 blocks and put red stone torches where the blocks should be, this sends a current up the pole and makes the pistons move automatically. Then you may add the preferred block in the empty space where the piston head will be.
NOTE: Keep in mind you will have about 2 seconds to place the preffered block as the pistons will still be moving.

This one was the first "design challenge", and he is not yet fully resolved!
Actually, the first was the unbreakable vault challenge over in the survival section. However, the nature of survival forum meant that it didn't mutate into a re-used topic title.
...until I started this in redstone forum.
Also, would you guys prefer an official or hamachi server ?
MPB? Two posts after the update and we already have an abbreviation for measuring minecraft airship speed. In any case, the ultimate design would be achieved by a machine in which the pilot holds down the right mouse button to place a power source, moving the craft a block. After this cycle the power pops off and another is immediately replaced.
On the OP, where is the horizontal version of the elevator?
Hmmm? Please link me to it; I kinda skimmed through 23 pages to compile everything.
It's only a single action to hold down the mouse button and flick a lever; however, doing so is at half the speed of, say, placing a redstone torch and moving.
Therefore, a lever being flicked multiple times while holding down right click will count as 1 action for placing the lever, plus an additional .5 for every flip of the lever.
Ok, I see the new guidelines for moves, so I will submit my redstone torch drive system again.
It has this front cross section
This is the view looking down
= normal piston
=sticky piston
Simple Drive Schematic:
It takes 5 simple moves to move this ship 1 block
1. place dirt
2. place a redstone torch on the side on the dirt block (you can right click on a normal piston, it will autoattatch to the dirt block)
= normal piston head
3. remove redstone torch
4. place redstone torch on the side on the dirt block (you can right click on a sticky piston, it will autoattatch to the dirt block)
=sticky piston head
5.remove dirt block
Full Move Drive Schematic:
Initial set up: Stand on middle normal piston, facing down at the middle sticky piston, with a dirt block selected.
1. place block
2. select redstone torch
3. place redstone torch
4. destroy redstone torch
5-6. jump on block (2 moves)
7. point aim at middle sticky piston (can be done at the same time as 5-6)
8. place redstone torch
9. point down at block
10. destroy block
11. point view at middle sticky piston
12. select block
This design leaves no trail (I think). Feel free to critique my drive system. With full description it only takes 12 moves to move this engine 1 block (a 12 MPB rating).

EDIT: Oh, it's that you put a space between the 46 and the .png
Although... I'm not really sure what this has to do with the topic. Probably nothing.
Just ignore him. I know there's someone floating around whom I've shown how to post image four times now and he still does it wrong. Keeps taking the pre-BBCode formatted copy-and-paste text and wrapping an [img] tag around it.

It's 95% like perpetual motion, wich is also impossible. You cannot propel a vehicle if it's not ' class='bbc'>powered. This is an endless loophole, even if redstone physics would be completely revamped it still wouldn't work!
i woulden't have said that last part, cause there could always be an new redstone componant

1. You misspelled "Which", which is a crime against humanity.
2. It's nothing like perpetual motion. The word you are looking for is "paradox".
3. Perpetual motion exists in minecraft.
4. I modified the goal. We are now looking for a craft that will move a block with the least complex actions on the part of a pilot.
5. We are still trying, because a flying machine would be really freaking cool.
6. This thread is not pointless, as we have already created new things because of it.
7. Don't make contentless posts that don't contribute, unless you want a little green in your warn status.
8. Why did I even respond :/

Relevance to this thread, we are going to keep trying to make it work, no matter what you say. So for everyone out there, leave us alone while we make the laws of Minecraft bow down to us.

Youtube hates me:
A team of highly trained monkeys has been sent to dispatch of your dead body.
Possible advancement in research, a (hopefully new) way to propel the craft that moves the craft two spaces per block and lever of "fuel" consumed. Yes I read the whole thread but, I'm not sure if this idea was already mentioned. Anyways...
= Sticky piston
= Normal piston
= Stuff and/or floor you won't fall through
= Dirt
= Lever
The base design (very simple):
Cross section:
Side view:
How to operate (I'm not going to count actions due to step #3 raking in high points):
1. Place dirt on sticky piston
2. Place lever on dirt
3. Right click spam lever until you move two spaces
4. Destroy dirt (Craft should look like this before dirt is destroyed)
5. Repeat from step 1
Pros:
- Fast (Relative to other barges)
- More distance traveled per blocks placed
- Easy to construct
Cons:
- Trigger finger
- Not as spacious as other barges
- You'll get pwned by ghasts
P.S.
The idea may also be applied to larger barges but, each piston must have it's own rapid right clicking lever.
P.S.S.
May the research go on! Ignore the nay-saying fools! I wanna FFLLLYYYYY!!!

HOLY COW! That is a weird BUD glitch you have going on there. Anyway, it works but you are right, it can only move one piston-sticky piston pair at a time. Here's my analysis:
I have it counted at 17 moves per 2 blocks (a 8.5 MPB engine) (Now I don't know how to count all of these lever flips, feel free to correct me).
Full Move Drive Schematic:
Initial setup: craft at step 4 position, dirt block selected, facing sticky piston.
1. place block
2. select lever
3-5. place lever and hold right mouse button for 2 lever flips
6-8. manual click 3 times very fast
9-11. hold down right mouse button for 3 flips
12-14. manual click 3 times very fast
15. destroy block
16. reposition view to face a sticky piston
17. select block
Therefore it has a 8.5 MPB rating, (it could be 8 MPB if a trail of blocks is left behind)
Here are the drawbacks.
1. The engine could misfire if the 3 quick presses are not timed correctly, increasing the MPB rating.
2. On a laggy server it could be impossible to get the timing correct
3. Minimal rows of blocks moved, minimal protection
4. It is easy to lose materials
Anyway, the MPB rating is very impressive and the speed is excellent! Also, could this glitch be used to make a more automatic system?

Oh, My bad. Thanks for correcting me. My point still stands, we will still try to make this flying machine work. Heck, they figured out how to transmute the damage value of blocks with redstone and pistons, who knows what we will find.
Good luck to all of you aviators in your search for more efficient flight!

(About time, considering how long this thread has been around.)
Please let me know if there is anything I have yet to add. I'll try to maintain it to help things along.
Also my two block design of the barge is 8 moves per block(MPB)
