So I've only just started using Hoppers, and created a hopper to chest death machine, so it will pick up all the items that i drop when i die, my question is, are you able to increase the speed at which the items moves to the chest?
… I heard somewhere that x is 3,5 seconds, but I think this is not true.
When hoppers were first introduced (13w01a) they moved items every 0.35 seconds, but that was changed to 0.4 seconds in 13w04a (i.e., 2.5 items per second).
Hoppers have a TransferCooldown field in their tile entity data. This is 0 when no items need to be moved, and is set to 8 when an item enters. Each game tick (not redstone tick), this number decreases by 1 -- when it hits zero, the hopper moves an item and if there are still more items to be moved resets the cooldown back to 8. 8 game ticks = 0.4 seconds (lag permitting).

If you're in creative mode you can use command blocks to reduse the cooldown.
/blockdata X Y Z {TransferCooldown:0}
Now this is done by memory, if this is wrong just pm me or wait from an answer from someone else.
