I'm trying to create a 3x3 staircase that goes straight down, but I am very bad at redstone circuits. I was able to get the first set, but I need to power two sticky pistons on top of each other, first the top, then the bottom to create the second set of steps, but all my attempts have failed.
Here's a side view, chests are un-powered sticky pistons:
What you want won't end up the way you'd like it, because sticky pistons can't pull more than one sticky piston (unfortunately - I designed a few things that depended on this being possible, and they don't work xD).
A solution is to have the staircase already built, and make pistons form the flat floor above from the side.
I managed to get the opposite, a flat surface that pushes up to form a staircase with sand, getting it to pop up is relatively easy. its getting it to reset the way I want it too that I'm trying to figure out. (thinking about posting for some help about this)
I imagine that a descending staircase IS possible, but it would probably take a quite a bit of thinking and engineering.
EDIT: I can reset easily, I just want it to reset when I toggle a button, which is a bit more involved due to the nature of pistons only grabbing one block and only if that block is not a piston that is extended.
Ok I think I did this in my world what you want to do is put sticky pistons on the bottom layer then put a second layer on top and leave it alone after that do a third layer on top of the second layer and build a platform outwards then put your sticky piston one block away then behind the sticky piston use an inverter to make it stick out and hit your stair piece then when you click it, it will pull the third one back, the second one will stay, and the first on will be pushed outwards. I'm not sure if that was what you were asking but I hope it was!

Any tips?

Very cool! I like the look of it when it snatches back the lightstone, as if to say "MIINEEE >:sad.gif:"
OK, I figured this out, but how can I have an un-powered torch below the piston turn on when the signal is received?
I'm trying to have a flat surface become stairs, but thanks for trying!
