I've been reading some stuff on the mods page about Eloraam's RedPower (Awesome, by the way. If you like mods, get it here.) and was inspired to try to make one of the creations mentioned in vanilla. It came out a lot bigger than with the mod(~20x30 instead of 8x10) but still works, and you can adjust the dot and dash lengths.
I'm trying to work out how to post images, will add when I can.
[EDIT] I worked out images, heres a telegraph in all its glory.
The version with mods:

Those signs are instructions to prevent signals bumping into each other, and define breaks in letters/words.
A telegraph is a series of words and phrases morse code is a series of dots and dashes.
Telegraphs use morse code...

This is medieval. Not the 1800-1900's. Redstone is magically powered.
Why not just come up with a system to move signs as if letters?
What, with pistons? I can try that next! I think pistons might just break signs though.
[EDIT] Turns out signs can't be piston'd. Good for a push stopper then, but not messages. New goal is a 7 segment display, vanilla and redpower. Does anyone have advice on how to get those images up? [/EDIT]
If a sign was on a sand block, and that sand block fell, would the sign go with it or break off?
If the sign went with it you could use sand cannons to launch messages XD

I actually had an idea a while ago for a machine that pushes sand and gravel into a line for the dots and dashes of morse code.
The hard part is getting them into a line, you'd need three rows to sync, and only two have gravity. Sand and gravel for dots/dashes, then a spacer for letter breaks.

I've got a basic prototype of the sand and gravel version working, but I want to work on it more before putting up pictures.
It seems to me that the benefit of using redstone is that its faster and has no real range, but won't force chunk updates so the message can die part way through.
Using blocks forces updates, but you need to actually get the message there, by knowing how far to go and putting in that many filler blocks. I'm thinking of using sand cannons, but I don't know how reliable they are and if they work with gravel.
Signs will break when moved, whether it be by pistons or sand/gravel. Moving signs is not very realistic, but then again, that's what they said about controllable water before pistons came out... If you figure out how to move signs, I will pay you in love.

I tested 78% addiction on minecraftanonymous.net
Minecraft doesn't have a specific time period..
Anyways, this sounds like a great idea.

And I just though of how to do that. Brb.

You do know that telegraphs sent messages as Morse Code right?
There were however, telegraphs that printed the Morse Code into actual print.
