I like the idea, but dislike that it's been almost a year since the tweet that this topic first linked to which started the discussion. I'm not sure if I should be surprised so many still have their hopes up at this point, or surprised so few read topic start dates.
I'm sorry, but I despise this idea of changing names. Sure, I regret my name, and more so down the track because I chose it from what bullies used to call me, but honestly let's look at the pros and cons of this.
Pros:
1. You can have a cool new username.
Cons:
1. Server Owners can't ban you if you change your name.
2. It is morally confusing for people to distinguish you.
3. It's going to cause many problems down the track, whether system overloads at Mojang, or debates of innapropriateness.
This is why I don't condone this new idea Jeb brought to mind, it's just plain horrible and will lead to a new level of griefing.
I have to agree with this. There would be heaps of people abusing this feature. Maybe not all, but lots. I still find this an interesting idea though, and would like to see how it is implemented.
My only concern is when someone changes their name 10 times so that I can't ban them on my server.
There would have to be some sort of user identification number that was tied to the account. You would ban the number and that would ban the account no matter what they changed their username to.
I personally would not use this feature, but i support getting since it seems so many people want it.
This Is My First Post Ever
Anyways I Think They Should Add The Name Changing Feature In The Next Update Or Soon Because I Got This Username When I Was 8 But Now I Really Don't Like It, It Sounds A Bit Childish And Its Really Buggin Me Everytime I Play Minecraft. But They Should Also Add A Form Before Someone Changes Their Username Asking Why They Want To Change Their Username For Preventing Griefers Or Trolls Changing Their Username Everytime And They Should Also Add This Feature When Someone Apply For A Username Change, They Get 7 Days Of The New User, But When They Check The Form And Think Its Bad, They Change The User Back To The Old One And If They Approve, The Player Gets To Keep Their New Username
What happens if someone on a Minecraft server wants to ban a player? Possibly, the supposedly banned player could continue playing the server as usual because they are able to change their Minecraft name. I'm not very keen on this idea even though it can benefit players with a f***ed-up name. I hope that Jeb and his team would reconsider this idea before allowing us to do so. It would be very annoying to find out the person you have just banned was able to join your server..
I honestly don't think that this feature should be added. People could steal your Minecraft identity, get away with spam by changing usernames every couple of seconds, its honestly not a good idea

I think it'll be a good idea to change usernames however place a restriction on it. For instance, only allowed to change it x amount of time or something OR if you change it too often, you can't change it again for x amount of time.
That's so true about the hacker part. This is one of the CONs that is preventing this from happening.
But then I jumped for joy.My name is lolsophia8 and I hate it.

Jfc, this post is almost a year old and every child from here to Timbuktu's quoting it. Just stop.
And on a side note, don't be so goddamn childish. I'll die before I take filthy orders from an eight year old...
We're still waitng for that feature. I really want to change my username so bad
